Hawaiian shirts (also known as Aloha shirts), have become the recognized symbol of this tropical paradise. The bold, colorful patterns illustrate the lifestyle, culture, flowers, foliage and heritage of the Hawaiian Islands. The American Textile History Museum presents a special exhibition, Let's Go Hawaiian from January to June, 2004. It is a fanciful look at our fascination with Hawaii, its influence on mainstream culture, and a lighthearted exploration of the cult of the Hawaiian shirt.

Taking a stand in Polynesia
Refusing to wear anything but traditional dress is Tahitian native Clement Pito's way of protesting what he calls French occupation of his land. Tahiti and its Polynesian neighbors have long been prizes of colonizing nations. Tahiti has been under French control since 1842 and a French colony since 1880. Its neighbors share a similar history. But Tahitians say it is not their land that is in danger it is their culture. The French language, French culture and French merchandise are everywhere you look in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia on Tahiti giving it an atmosphere and appearance of a French provincial town, with palm trees. In 1767, when British sailors became the first Europeans to drop anchor in Matavai Bay, they were greeted by people whose culture was completely different from their own. Each ship returned to Europe with amazing stories of feasting and dancing, and of beautiful, exotic people. The stories inspired artists and writers with the philosophical ideal of the "noble savage."

Only a two-hour time difference from the west coast of the United States, Tahiti is light-years away. Born of volcanic violence, the islands typify an earthly paradise with unrivaled beaches and lush tropical scenery. Few other places on earth come so close to perfection. Although attempts by overly zealous missionaries in the late-1790's obliterated many sacred maraes (temples) and banned native rituals and customs, their efforts didn't diminish the joyous Tahitian spirit and culture. Traditions live on to the delight of visitors and locals alike. "Tahiti, where love lives"—Tahiti Tourisme promotes that slogan and from the lush green mountains to the crystal clear warm lagoon waters, the islands are truly romantic and appealing. Their rhythmic grace is both joyous and tranquil.

La Polynesie Française is a world of islands strewn across an ocean territory the size of Western Europe. All the islands except one - Rapa, the most southerly- lie between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Equator. Within that zone is a galaxy of atolls, the Tuamotus, whose coral strands are no higher above sea level than a pandanus shrub. To the north-east there are the distant Marquesas Islands, whose mountains, canyons and cataracts have a spectacular grandeur. There are the lonely Austral Islands- the southernmost group- which are almost untouched by European civilisation, and in the centre of this vast oceanic region is Tahiti, the spellbinding island of legend and love. All these islands are volcanic in origin, born of eruptions which occurred over a “hot spot” in the central Pacific millions of years ago. The atolls are the oldest islands, being the sunken remnants of once-high volcanic peaks like

It runs for a month and includes the National Holidays of July 14. Events over this period are sumptuous and are characterized by heated contests between the best artistic groups with singing, dancing and their costumes, not to mention the sports contest of canoe racing, copra preparation, stone lifting and weaving, all of which are traditional Polynesian practices. The heart of the people is also to be found in the "Crafts Heiva", that runs concurrently with these events with exhibitions and demonstrations of all forms of craftwork from the five island groups together. The rest of the year is studded with various cultural events organised by the very dynamic crafts, horticultural and cultural clubs. Sports play a growing role with unsurpassed international fame in surfing and canoe racing in particular.

Australian William Reed is one of Tahiti's black pearl pioneers, having started up Tahiti Perles, which he sold in 1975 to Robert Wan, who has made it Tahiti's biggest private pearl producer today. Reed worked in Tahiti from 1967-1973 as a biologist with the government's Fisheries Department. His most recent visit to Tahiti was for the October 1996 Poe Rave Nui Auction, during which he bought one lot of 633 pearls for his company, Pearlconsult in Broome, Western Australia. During that visit, Reed agreed to trace the history of pearl oyster and pearl culture experiments conducted in French Polynesia prior to 1975. In describing the background to Tahiti's pearl culture industry, Reed noted that "about 1900 Simon Grand, an oyster farmer from Arcachon, came to Tahiti and experimented in several lagoons and eventually in the Gambier Islands, where he had some success in collecting spat and growing

The Department of Hawaiian and Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures at the University of HawaiiManoa is the only educational institution in the english-speaking world to offer a comprehensive course in any of the languages of French Polynesia. The word "Tahiti" is the name for the largest island in French Polynesia and perhaps the most legendary island in the south Pacific, if not the world. In the minds of most westerners the lure of that word is seldom rivaled. Tahiti is also the most populous island of French Polynesia, the seat of the French territorial administration and the location through which outsiders must pass to reach the rest of the territory and through which people throughout the territory move to reach the rest of the world. It is small wonder, then, that "Tahiti" has come to function as a synonym for French Polynesia itself. To the uninitiated "Tahitian" describes anyone or any thing from French Polynesia. To use these words in this fashion is to fail to appreciate some basic facts about the context of cultural and linguistic difference in which these terms take on their true meaning.

    75. TATAU: THE TAHITIAN REVIVAL
Through Tavana s efforts in bringing the Samoan tattooist to tahiti, the traditional tattoo was reintroduced into tahitian culture.
    http://tattoos.com/allen/TATAU.htm
TATAU: THE TAHITIAN REVIVAL by Tricia Allen Tattooing was an integral part of ancient Tahitian society. It was far more than merely a bodily ornament. Tattoos would indicate a young girl's sexual maturity, freedom from food tapus and other restrictions, genealolgy andone's rank within society. Nearly everyone in ancient Tahitian society was tattooed. The early French explorer Bougainville noted that "the women of Tahiti dye their loins and buttocks a deep blue" and Captain Cook returned from the Pacific with stories of the art of tatau (hence, the origin of the word tattoo). Shortly after the missionaries arrival the practice was strictly banned, as it was viewed it as a sinful glorification of the flesh. In recent years, however, the art of tattooing has enjoyed a renaissance. Tahitians, and other Polynesians as well, are once again taking pride and interest in their cultural heritage, finding their identity in the revival of many lost artsincluding the traditional tatau. The revival of ttraditional tattoo in Tahiti began in 1981 when Tavana, a previous resident of Hawai'i and Waikiki nightclub owner, and a young Marquesan dancer named Teve, went to Germany to research traditional tattoo designs. On their return trip they stopped in Samoa, as Samoa is the only island group within Polynesia that kept the art of the traditional tatau alive. Arrangements were made for a Samoan tattooist to visit Tahiti, where Teve would receive the full-body traditional tatau done in the Marquesan style, and Tavana would be tattooed with Tahitian designs.

    Tahiti. Sylvain
    Preface by Gian Paolo Barbieri
    Introduction by Jean Lacouture
Text and photographs by Adolphe Sylvain When photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri arrived in Pepeete in search of a French photographer by the name of Sylvain, whose work he had admired on some old, faded postcards, he was told that Sylvain was dead and his archives destroyed by fire. Barbieri had all but given up his quest to find Sylvain when by chance he came across the late photographer's wife, Jeanine Tehani. She was the island beauty who had mesmerized the young Sylvain back in 1946; one look into her eyes and he married her and stayed there for the rest of his life. Since Sylvain's death in 1991 she had been dreaming that a European would embark on the island and discover his life's work. Barbieri (born, in an amazing twist of fate, on the same day and hour as Sylvain) fulfilled her dream by bringing Sylvain's photographs-some of which, though damaged, had survived the fire in 1969-back to Germany to be published. The result is this book full of the best images culled from Sylvain's archives, including dreamy portraits of Tahiti's lovely, mystical women, heartbreakingly beautiful landscapes and photos of celebrities, such as Brigitte Bardot and Charles de Gaulle, who visited the island.
