The People

The 1988 population census found a total of about 190,000 people in French Polynesia. However the criteria used for defining the racial groups can only approximate a breakdown of: 70% Polynesian, 12% European, 10% Polynesian/European, five per-cent Chinese, and three percent Polynesian/Chinese. All are French citizens. The 1988 population figures for the five administrative subdivisions are Windward Islands 140,341, Leeward Islands 22,232, Austral Islands 6,500, Tuamotu/Gambier Islands 12,374, Marquesas Islands 7,358. About 70% of the total population lives on Tahiti. The indigenous people of Tahiti-Polynesia are the maohi or Eastern Polynesians (as opposed to the Western Polynesians in Samoa and Tonga). Racial intermariages are commun and many Tahitians can claim French, Chinese, American and Polynesian ancestry. This accounts for the physical beauty of the inhabitants and the total abscence of racial prejudice, either from the Europeans or the Tahitians. Education
Formal education is mandatory in Tahiti for every child to the age of 14. Primary education begins at age five, and continues to the age of 12, when children begin secondary education.

AN INTRODUCTION TO TAHITI
What is so great about Tahiti and its islands?

Well, that's an easy one: for starters, these are the most beautiful tropical islands in the world, thanks to their dramatic geography, the lush tropical vegetation and their unique multicolored crystal lagoons. Then there are the flowers, lots of them, and all the lovely people (wearing the flowers in their hair, as leis or behind their ears) and their culture. And then, there is the famous magic of these islands ... and this, I can't explain.
Why should I go to Tahiti rather than Hawaii, Mexico or the Caribbean's?

If you want big hotels, lots of people around and an ordinary vacation, then Tahiti is not for you.
Tahiti receives less tourists in 1 year than Hawaii gets in 1 day. No big resorts in Tahiti ( the biggest will accommodate 180 GUESTS MAXIMUM !) very few tourists or locals to be seen, and all this magical environment basically all to yourself

Maori History: The Maori people are the indigenous people of New Zealand. They are Polynesian and comprise about 8% of the country's population. Maoritanga is the native language which is related to Tahitian and Hawaiian. It is believed that the Maori migrated from Polynesia in canoes about the 9th century to 13th century AD. Dutch navigator Abel Tasman was the first European to encounter the Maori. Four members of his crew were killed in a bloody encounter in 1642. In 1769 British explorer James Cook established friendly relations with some Maori. By the 1800 visits by European ships were relatively frequent. In 1840 representatives of Britain and Maori chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi. This treaty established British rule, granted the Maori British citizenship, and recognized Maori land rights.

Tahiti Where to Stay Tahiti Tourisme The Moorings Vacation Rentals Guide Cruise Directory ... Other Tahiti destinations If there is one island that summons up all the romance of the South Pacific as a tropical paradise, it is…Tahiti. It's been that way for more than two centuries, since the island's charms (including its free-spirited women) helped spark the mutiny on the Bounty. Today the international airport in Tahiti's capital of Papeete is the gateway to all of French Polynesia. If you've come here for white-sand beaches and aquamarine lagoons, chances are you've already made plans to continue on to some of Tahiti's neighboring islands, perhaps Moorea (just 7 miles away) or Bora-Bora. Tahiti does have beaches (some, like Papara, are black sand), although its scenic attractions tend to be lush mountains and waterfalls rather than idyllic palm-fringed strands. Hiking and horseback rides in the interior are favorite activities, but there's no shortage of waterplay, from snorkeling to surfing (the cavernous tubes at Teahupoo are considered the most challenging waves on the pro circuit). pareus (wraps). Nightlife? Well, let's just say it's the liveliest within thousands of miles.

Pacific News member of French Polynesia Lifestyle Marriage and Family Tahitian families often used to be large, usually with many children and several generations sharing a home. Couples may still live with the husband's or wife's parents for a time after marriage, but increased contact with western culture has led to a trend towards nuclear families . Family ties are very strong. In Polynesian culture, children are highly valued and their upbringing is often shared by grandparents or other sets of adoptive parents ( faamu In the past, marriage partners were chosen by the family, but today young people have greater freedom in choosing partners. The tradition of celebrating marriages with feasts and festivities still endures. Diet and Eating Tahitians eat three meals a day. The main meal is eaten in the middle of the day. Breakfast usually consists of bread and a hot drink. The evening meal is also light, except when it is a special occasion or when people are dining in a restaurant. The Tahitian diet consists of fish and other seafood, chicken, pork, sweet potatoes, breadfruit, rice, and local fruit and vegetables such as papaya, mangoes, pineapples, bananas, and fafa a type of spinach.

http://www.pacificexchangeprod.com/OteaApi_Tahiti.htm
Go Back to Otea Api There is less than half a year left until the Halau finally makes the trip to perform in Tahiti. It will be a highlight and an honor to at last dance on the land of Tahiti, in front of its people. This culmination will finally be realized after years of preparation through many performances, practices, and competitions. From the Kumu Hulas and Instructors of our group, to its dancers, performing in Tahiti has a special meaning to each individual who will make the journey. This page will be used to introduce you to some members of our Halau that will perform in Tahiti, and what it means to them. Jaqueline Benigno How long have you been dancing with 'Ote'a 'Api, and how did you get started? "I think I've been dancing since I was like ten... so that makes eight years. My cousins were in 'Ote'a 'Api, and eventually got us to join the group with them." What experience (s) do you hope to bring back with you from Tahiti? "I'm so excited about the Tahiti trip because I believe going there with the group will not only allow everyone to have hella fun times, but it will also help us grow together as Tahitian dancers... as 'Ote'a 'Api. I'm actually very curious to see what its really like over there... the people, the land, and just the whole Tahitian environment. I hope to come back from Tahiti having learned a lot more about the culture and dance, so that I will be able to absorb it all and take my dancing to the next level."

About the Tahiti Friendship Society We are a new organization promising to explore and promote Tahitian culture in the United States. The Tahiti Friendship Society, centered out of Santa Barbara California, was started recently by numerous Americans and Tahitians (residing in America) who are united in their passion for the arts, music and culture(s) of the islands of French Polynesia. We believe that there is something about Tahitian culture that can touch the spirit and the soul of all people, and this is rare. The organization will promote Tahitian dance and music exhibitions featuring groups from Tahiti and the U.S., and organize seminars for growing number of Americans interested in learning Tahitian dance and musical instruments. We realize that the 'source' of the culture is in the hearts and minds of the people of French Polynesia; we have to figure out a way to get Tahitians involved. According to President and Tubuai island native, Diana Tere, the group hopes to help promote the understanding and interest in Tahitian arts. "We are going to publish a quarterly journal that will encompass creative and scientific writings about French Polynesia as well as the arts. We will invite submissions from the great scholars interested in Tahiti as well as anyone wishing to express their thoughts in prose or poetry and artists and craftsmen from Tahiti and around the world who have captured these islands in their art."
