Tahiti
A background of French Polynesia, its people and its culture.
POPULATION
French Polynesia is home to 220,000 people who are reknowned for their joie de vivre, beauty and elegance.
While 75% of the population is classed as Polynesian, 12% is Chinese, mostly the descendants of plantation labourers, and 10% is local and expatriate French 10% and 3% other Europeans. However, over the centuries of European contact, there has been much genetic mixing, with some authorities saying that only 20% of the people are full Polynesian. The result is a fabulous people mixing the best of all races, and where racism does not exist.
A third of the population is under 15 and people now have a life expectancy of over 70.
French and Tahitian are the official languages and English is widely spoken and understood.
Virtually all children attend school, and the country has a 98% literacy rate.
RELIGION Religion plays an important part of daily life, and in rural areas, is reserved as a day of worship. Church services are uplifting, with the choirs singing passionately and clearly, the voices reaching for Heaven itself. 'Sunday best' means white for the women, whose flowing white dresses are accessoried by white hats of all shapes and sizes. Almost half the population is Protestant, with 37% being Catholic and the remaining 16% being different Christian religions and other religions such as Buddhists.

The Culture

The history of old Polynesia is veiled in the mists of time. The discovery of buried villages and stone petroglyphs are pieces to the puzzle. Yet the mystery of origin is still unsolved.
Legends tell of the Sky father and Earth mother. Parents of the Maohi people, whose ancestral home was a place called Havaiki.
This race of brave seafarers arrived in double hulled outrigger sailing canoes. They came from Samoa or Tonga to discover the Marquesas Islands. The Maohi ancestors of today's Polynesians discovered all the Islands of Tahiti. Polynesian society was then in full flower. Centuries before man left the Mediterranean to learn that the Earth is round.
The era of European exploration started in the 1500's. When ships without outriggers began to arrive. These discovery voyages continued for more than 200 years. And the fame of Tahiti spread throughout the world.
Tahiti and Her Islands are waiting for you to discover the dream. Culture On Location Specials Reservations ... F.A.Q.

ArticleInsider.com Tahiti culture is multi-faceted. There are many things that speak only to the originality of Tahiti. Others are a mix of the French Polynesian islands. One of the things that was for centuries pure Tahitian was that of the art of tattooing. It was first practiced in the 1500's and was an integral part of the culture until missionaries influenced the society to stop. It was revived, however, in the 1980's and is once again growing in popularity. Click Here to Arrange your Next Vacation with Our Recommended Travel Company! Dances and great celebrations are also a vital part of Tahiti Culture . Everything is commemorated by an elaborate show of music and dance. All celebrations are with excitement, music, and colorful attire nothing like you have seen any place else. The French Polynesian dances are filled with movement that is a language all its own. Every move is an interpretation of whatever is being sung about. Words and movement take on a meaning of celebration. Tahiti Culture Is Exciting
The food is another part of Tahiti culture that you just cannot appreciate until you have tasted. Polynesian music adds a special dimension to the French and South Pacific food. Many of the better restaurants offer dinner shows or outside festivities that exudes with the ultimate of the culture of Tahiti. Any event can be made a celebration by embracing the Tahiti lifestyle.

The missionaries did all they could to wipe out traditional Polynesian culture by levelling temples, destroying carvings, and banning tattoos and that heady, erotic dancing that Bougainville told Europe about. The missionaries sought to make the Polynesians follow the teachings of the Good Book and their own autocratic commandments, but fortunately some of the traditional ways survived. Recently there's been a strong push to revive old ways and rediscover traditional arts. Traditional musical instruments include pahu and toere drums and the curious nose flute called a vivo tamure ) has slowly made its way back into French Polynesian life, but, sadly, the art of making tapa (bark paper and cloth), practised throughout the Pacific, has all but disappeared. Things are pretty laid back in French Polynesia - dress standards are relaxed even in the classiest restaurants and beach wear is often just from the waist down. Church is deadly serious though and Sunday is the day of worship (fully clothed). The Polynesian concept of family is a much broader one than in the West - cousins, uncles, aunts etc are all part of the scene and are called fetii . The family might also have adopted children

In terms of art and culture, upper-class Tahitians have adopted western pop culture. French Polynesians wear the latest fashions, listen to the latest pop music and drive the latest Bavarian cars and Japanese automobiles.Yet despite this obvious affection for Western style, the proud people of French Polynesia still have their own language and customs. For the most part dress standards are relaxed even in the classiest restaurants and beach wear is often just from the waist down. The area has inspired a host of legendary artistic works, from Rousseau's "Noble Savage," Herman Melville's groundbreaking book, "Typee," and of course, the artististry of painter Paul Gauguin, whose earth-hued portraits of Polynesian life are world-renowned. Arguably, the most resilient aspects of Polynesian culture are music and dance. Traditional percussionists offer one of the purest expressions of Polynesian music and are as much a part of the music scene today as are electric guitarists (percussionist always accompany dance troupes). Tahitian music has evolved into a fiery mix of Polynesian melody and rhythm and American pop, Jamaican reggae, French chansons and even hymns borrowed from the missionaries.

Huahine has lush vanilla plantations, banana groves, and taro fields, Huahine is actually two islands basking in one lagoon, encircled by a coral necklace. On Huahine's shores, coconut palms sprout in untamed profusion, separated from the sea by a narrow band of powdery white sand. Considered to be the cradle of ancient Polynesian culture, Huahine is home to many of Polynesia 's most important archaeological sites. Huahine's fascinating artifacts can be found here, at Maeva, a former royal village, with its restored marae (sacrificial temples). In a nearby sacred lake, 300-year-old stone fishing traps, still in use today, can only be removed by descendants of the Tahitian royal family.
