The sessions are intended for upper level competitors who are actively competing or plan to be actively competing at sport Taekwondo events. Currently, athletes are from the New England region and include several who are present and competitve at the National and International level. Here's the story: The workouts are informal, but they are intense. It's not about anybody trying to be anybody else's coach or master, but just about bringing the best of New England Sport Taekwondo together in one place regularly . We've been doing it for a while now, and we know it works - it certainly works for athletes in New York and we've been there.

About Taekwondo
The martial art of Taekwondo came from Korea. Its name means "the art of hand and foot fighting". "Tae" means "to kick", "kwon" means "fist" or "to punch" and "do" means "way" or "art".
Taekwondo was developed from native Korean martial arts, such as "Taek kyon", with additions from others, such as chuan fa (Chinese boxing; "kung fu"), karate and aikido.
At Bell College, students, staff and members of the public-of all ages-can try it for themselves. Find out why more than 50 million people world-wide get the biggest kick of all - the world's most powerful and most popular martial art and the most exciting new Olympic sport! The Do of Taekwondo
Although the name Taekwondo has only been in use since 1955, the style's evolution can be traced back through much of Korea's history. Literally translated, Taekwondo means foot hand art , or the art of unarmed combat. The do in Taekwondo implies a whole philosophy or way of life is contained within its teachings: Taekwondo is much more than just a martial sport. An understanding of the history of Korea is an important part in appreciating the do of Taekwondo
    Gojoseon
Korean history began in the year 2333 B.C. when Gojoseon (Old Korea) was founded at Asadal by the legendary DanGun . Although there are no written records of any fighting systems from this era, the tribal peoples of the time are known to have been hunters and must have had some means to protect themselves from neighbouring tribes and indigenous wild life.
    The Three Kingdoms
The earliest records of fighting systems in Korea date back to about 50 B.C. Murals in royal tombs from the Goguryeo period, and sculptures at pagodas from the

Taekwondo History
The origin of Taekwondo traces back to the three kingdoms of Koguryo (37 BC-668 AD), Paekche (18 BC-600 AD), and Silla (57 BC-936 AD). Archaeological findings (mural paintings on the royal tombs of the Koguryo dynasty, the stone sculptures of pagadas of temples of the Silla period, and documents written in the Paekche dynasty) showed fighting stances, skills, and formalized movements similar to today's Tae Kwon Do styles and forms.
The modern period of Taekwondo began with the liberation of Korea in 1945 after World War II. Korea wanted to eliminate Japanese influences (in martial arts) and began to unite the various martial arts schools (Kwans) and styles into a single style and national sport. In 1965, the name Tae Kwon Do was chosen to represent this unified style of Korean martial arts.
Chronological Achievements of Tae Kwon Do
  • 1972 - Construction of Kukkiwon was completed.
  • 1973 - World Taekwondo Federation created.
  • 1973 - The first World Taekwondo Championships were held (biannual event).
  • 1974 - The first Asian Taekwondo Championships were held (biannual event).

- News - The Future of Taekwon-Do is Bright -
Will Kim Un-yong's Arrest Be the End of Taekwondo? With the arrest of the vice president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kim Un-yong, best known as the representative of Korean sports in international sporting society, the status of Korean athletics is expected to decline. In addition, the position of Taekwondo as an international sport is likely to be weakened, since Kim was instrumental, if not Herculean, in successfully having Taekwondo recognized as an official Olympic sport.
According to the IOC Charter, those under investigation for ethics violations and those who cause grave harm to the IOC and to Olympic affairs can be dismissed from the organization with the consent of more than two-thirds of the members present. Domestic sports figures view suspension as the end of Kim tenure as an IOC member. Korea is currently represented by two other IOC members, besides Kim: Lee Kun-hee and Park Yong-sung. Since both are businessmen, however, they have not been able to work as competently and as committed sports diplomats as has Kim. Moreover, Park's tenure as an IOC member ends in October 2005, since he obtained the IOC membership on behalf of the International Judo Federation, of which is the president.

TAEKWONDO UNION WOES DELAY KEY OLYMPIC STATUS HEARING By Mike Spence
Reprinted with permission from Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph Plagued by numerous internal battles, as well as claims and counter claims of fiscal mismanagement, U.S. Taekwondo Union officials were forced to delay an important hearing on the organization's Olympic status. Former USTU president Hwa Chong wrote to the U.S. Olympic Committee on Dec. 5 asking for postponement of a Dec. 6 hearing with the USOC's membership and credentials committee. The hearing was important because the USTU was hoping to be elevated from Pan American to Olympic status since taekwondo has been added to the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia. The change in status is significant for several reasons. Olympic-level sports bodies receive more prestige, money and representation from the USOC. In the USTU's case, it expected to receive a grant of $258,064 from the USOC during the 1997 fiscal year, as well as an international competition grant of $9,457, in its new status as an Olympic sport. Because the hearing was postponed, the USTU remains a Pan Am level sport. The USOC informed USTU officials the organization's grant for 1997 was being reduced to $178,100.

The WTF stands for the World Taekwondo Federation. Formed in 1973, the WTF is the largest martial arts organization in the world, and is the governing body for Taekwondo worldwide. The WTF is the parent organization for the United States Taekwondo Union (USTU), which is the national governing body for the WTF in the United States.
