An Olympic Taekwondo match is comprised of three rounds lasting three minutes each, during which combatants "Chung" (blue) and "Hong" (red) try to dominate one another with kicks and punches. There is a one minute rest period between rounds. Blows must land on the target area in order to score. The target area for hand blows is the front of the body between the waist and the base of the neck (excluding the throat). The target area for foot techniques includes the head, as well as the body. Scoring areas are the body armour or the face The combatants wear protective equipment on their forearms, shins, heads and upper bodies. The match is presided over by a referee and scored by a panel of three judges. Foot and hand techniques must be executed with control in order to score. In other words, if a competitor loses balance after executing a blow, that blow will not count. If a combatant staggers or falls after receiving a blow, the referee will stop the match and resume it after a 10-second count. If one of the fighters is unable to continue as a result of blows received, his or her opponent is given the victory by a knockout. Fighters can also be docked points for rule violations such as holding, avoiding fighting, attacking with the knee, throwing the opponent, attacking the groin or pushing.

As sports return to Afghanistan, so do Olympic hopes
Associated Pres
KABUL, Afghanistan He looks out from his office window onto the cracked, empty stadium below, and he points to the goal. "There," says the head of Afghanistan's Olympic committee, "is where they hanged people." Now, in the new Afghanistan, where peace is a political mantra and most ills are blamed on the last guys who ran the place, the soccer field in Kabul Sports Stadium is used for something different. These days, they use it to play soccer. In a land buffeted by 23 years of war, sports was hardly a priority. But this week, as Afghanistan plans to send its first delegation in three years to an international Olympic meeting, the athletes of an isolated country have a reason, however small, to hope. "We are an independent country again, and we are ready to compete," the Olympic chief, Anwar Jekdalek, said Saturday. "All the world recognizes Afghanistan again." It's not quite that easy. The International Olympic Committee still hasn't reinstated Afghanistan, which it barred in 1999 in part because the harsh Islamic rule of the Taliban militia prevented women from competing.

Tae Kwon Do
The following descriptions of tae kwon do will give you a basic understanding of where the style came from and how it evolved into what it is today, but there are many books, videos and DVD's available to further your knowledge of Tae Kwon Do A brief history of Tae Kwon Do Early Koreans developed unique martial art forms for unarmed self defense to complement their skills with weapons. The first recorded evidence of what was to become modern Tae Kwon Do is found about two thousand years ago in Korean history. A mural painting from the Koguryu kingdom (37 B.C to 66 A.D.) was found in a tomb believed to have been built sometime during the period 3 to 427 A.D . This mural depicts figures practicing martial arts techniques. Historical records from this Koguryu period also mention the practice of martial arts techniques and tournaments. The early forms had different names, such as Kwonbak, Bakhi, Dangsoo, Taesoo and Kongsoo. From about 600 A.D. to about 1400, the main stream dominant form was Soobak, which further evolved into Taekyon beginning in the late 1300s.

Taekwondo was popularized in Korea and has become a part of its culture and heritage, but now over 50 million people worldwide participate in one form or another. Taken literally, taekwondo means "the way of hands and feet." It can trace its roots back to over 2000 years ago, as evidenced by various murals found on ancient Korean tombs, but it didn't get its name or its official rules until 1957. Each contest involves two competitors, "

It is an Olympic sport, an artistic discipline,
a system of self-defense, and a way of life.
An Olympic Sport
Tae Kwon Do is an Olympic sport. It was introduced to the Olympics in Korea in 1988. Unlike many of the other sports that young people are involved with today, Tae Kwon Do competitors are required by rule to demonstrate respect for officials coaches and their fellow competitors. What a concept!
An Artistic Discipline
Tae Kwon Do is an artistic discipline. The techniques are done with graceful and powerful movements. Students continuously strive to improve the artistic presentation of each technique. The art of Tae Kwon Do develops posture, graceful movement, excellent coordination, and attention to detail. We believe that everyone can benefit from exposure to this artistic discipline.
Self-Defense Training
Self-defense skills are safety skills. We believe that it's important for everyone to learn these self-defense skills. When a person learns and develops self-defense skills, the chance of sustaining an injury due to a fall or an attack is greatly reduced; and the chance of escaping from a mugging, a rape or an abduction attempt is greatly increased! Learning these safety skills does not promote violence; rather, it enables one to avoid becoming a victim of violence and to minimize injury during a fall.

Taekwondo was first introduced into the U.S. in the 1950s. From this time until 1973 there was a broad diversity of teaching methodologies and styles, which were brought from the six major Kwan (schools) of Taekwondo in Korea. With unification initiated by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) under the leadership of Dr. Un Yong Kim, instructors in the U.S. organized and made possible the admission of Taekwondo into the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) in 1974. Under this organization, all newly established technical standards, sanctioned by the WTF, were adopted into this official form of Taekwondo in the United States. Its name was changed to the National AAU Taekwondo Union on September 9, 1984. On April 7, 1984, during the House of Delegates Meeting of the U.S. Olympic Committee, the U.S. Taekwondo Union was unanimously approved as a "Group A" member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. U.S. Taekwondo Union is a non-profit amateur sports organization that exists to develop Taekwondo in the U.S. It is the National Governing Body for Taekwondo, as well as the sole representative of the WTF in the United States. The U.S. Taekwondo Union is responsible for development and competitive programs. It sanctions U.S. tournaments and meets, administers national championships and reports to the World Taekwondo Federation and the U.S. Olympic Committee as a National Governing Body for Taekwondo in the U.S. Because of its leadership, it is fast becoming one of the largest athletic associations in the U.S. Its success is evident in the growing popularity Taekwondo has experienced in the past several years. The 1991 U.S. Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championships in Cincinnati attracted a crowd of over 10,000 people.

TaekwondoToward Sydney Getting Ready to Show the Finest Competition Taekwondo, a martial art that involves all manner of exciting kicks and body throws, has over the past 20 years gained wide popularity in over 120 countries around the world. It has been adopted as an official competitive sport for the first time at this year's Sydney Olympics, for which the countdown has begun. In order to fight the best competition possible, the Korean athletes are sweating it out in training this summer.
The countries that will compete in the 2000 Sydney Olympics taekwondo competition have been decided. The World Taekwondo Federation announced May 13 that a total of 44 countries had won a ticket to the Olympic Games based on performances in the World Championships and regional preliminaries. Of them, six countries (Korea, the Philippines, Taiwan, Cuba, the United States and Spain) will be sending both men's and women's teams in two weight classes. By region, there are 17 countries from Europe, 11 from Asia, 10 from the Americas, 5 from Africa and Australia, which is competing in all the events as the host country. The men's competition will be held in four weight classes with a total of eight gold medals up for grabs. To prevent any one country from dominating the medals, each country has been limited to participation in two weight classes.
Korea started holding qualifying matches to select its Olympic team members last year. The first trials attracted 770 people. After a series of international competitions and three more trials, four candidates for each weight class were selected in March. These 16 people were put into training at the T'aerung Training Center and after three more matches, two men and two women were selected for two weight classes April 28.

Welcome to Christian Taekwondo Academy
Here at Kent's Christian Taekwondo Academy we teach traditional Taekwondo based on over 2,000 years of Korean tradition. Taekwondo means the way of the foot and fist. Literally, Taekwondo practitioners are equally adept with hand strikes and kicking techniques.
Taekwondo is famous for its powerful leaping and spinning kicks, though students also learn close hand fighting, throws, joint manipulation and other basic elements of self defense. The style of Taekwondo we teach was founded by General Choi Hong Hi in the 1950s when he unified the various styles into one Korean martial arts.
Kent's Christian Taekwondo Academy teaches this martial art with emphasis on the art.
History of Mr. Kent
Mr. Harold Kent started training in the art of Taekwondo in 1976 under Mr. Richard Hoadley under ATA. After receiving his black belt he enrolled in ATA's Instructor Training Program. Mr. Kent tested under Master H.U. Lee, Master Soon Hoo Lee, and many other high ranking Leaders famous today. After the break up of the ATA many students felt loyal to their Instructors and followed them and they became members of the USTA which is still around today. Mr. Kent is now a member of Taekwondo America and still teaches Traditional Taekwondo which focuses on the Art. You can contact Mr. Kent at hnatkent@bellsouth.net

    History
A short overview of the history of Taekwondo, ethics and etiquettes.
    History of Taekwondo
The earliest records of Martial Arts practice in Korea date back to about 50 B.C. These earliest forms of korean martial arts are known as ' Taek Kyon '. Evidence that Martial Arts were being practiced at that time can be found in tombs where wall-paintings show two men in fighting-stance. Others reject this evidence and say that these men could be simply dancing. Back then, time there were three kingdoms:
  • Koguryo (37 B.C. - 668 A.D.) Paekje (18 B.C. - 600 A.D.) Silla (57 B.C. - 935 A.D.)
  • Silla unified the kingdoms after winning the war against Paekje in 660 A.D. and Koguryo in 668 A.D. The Hwa Rang Do played an important role at this unification. The Hwa Rang Do was an elite group of young noble men, devoted to cultivating mind and body and serve the kingdom Silla. The best translation for HwaRang would probably be "flowering youth" (Hwa ="flower", Rang="young man"). The HwaRang Do had an honor-code and practiced various forms of martial arts, including Taekyon and Soo Bakh Do. The old honor-code of the HwaRang is the philosophical background of modern Taekwondo. What followed was a time of peace and the HwaRang turned from a military organization to a group specialized in poetry and music. It was in 936 A.D. when Wang Kon founded the Koryo dynasty, an abbreviation of Koguryo. The name Korea is derived from Koryo.

    Our Purpose and Philosophy
Our program is designed to assist in the personal development of our students. We use a variety of activities to help us achieve our objectives, including an Olympic sport, an artistic discipline, self-defense training, and an abundance of exercises and educative games. Our philosophy is that all students can continuously improve themselves, both physically and mentally through Taekwondo training, and enjoy the process. Taekwondo Taekwondo originated in Korea, over two thousand years ago. It has developed and improved over the centuries. Today, Taekwondo is the world's most popular martial art. It is an official Olympic sport. It is also found in most colleges as an extra-curriculum sport or club. People practice Taekwondo in every country in the world. It is known throughout the world that Taekwondo is very beneficial to children. The course at the Starling Taekwondo Academy is a fun, safe system of personal development, which is highly recommended by many parents, physicians, and educators. It may be the best extra-curricular activity for children. An Artistic Discipline Taekwondo is an artistic discipline. The techniques are done with graceful and powerful movements called poomse (forms). Students continuously strive to improve the artistic presentation of each technique. The art of Taekwondo develops posture, balance, powerful movement, excellent coordination, and attention to detail.
