Taekwondo Basics The Mat Penalties

Taekwondo was a demonstration sport in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and again in 1992 Barcelona. The 2000 Games at Sydeny will mark its first Olympics as a medal sport.
The Basics
  • There will be men's and women's competition with four weight classes in each. The match consists of three rounds of three minutes each. The rounds are separated by one-minute breaks. At least two of the three judges must register a strike in order for the athlete to be awarded points. Knockdowns are followed by a 10-count.
  • A match can be won by virtue of a knockout, a decision on points, a default or a disqualification.

San Jose To Host Judo, Taekwondo Olympic Trials
POSTED: 12:09 pm PST December 17, 2003 SAN JOSE, Calif. The United States Olympic Committee announced Wednesday that the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for judo and taekwondo would take place in a two-sport competition June 5 at the San Jose State Event Center. This first-of-its-kind, dual-discipline format will feature American athletes vying for the honor of representing the U.S. at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. In announcing that the "Road to Athens" would again take the U.S. judo and taekwondo hopefuls through San Jose, USOC Chief of Sport Performance Jim Scherr citeed the strong support of the region's residents for Olympic sports, adding, "We have great partners in the City of San Jose and the San Jose Sports Authority." In February 2003, the San Jose State Event Center was the multi-staged venue for the inaugural "Titan Games: The Road to Athens" featuring wrestling, boxing, fencing, judo, karate, taekwondo, weightlifting, and athletics (shot put). Elite athletes representing the United States and other world sports powers competed in the "USA versus the World" format in dual and triangular meets.

Kim was speaking jokingly after reporters asked him about his relationship with fellow International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound of Canada. Both Kim and Pound recently lost the race for IOC presidency. Kim said he was "good friends" with Pound and there was no need to mend fences with the Canadian. "Sometimes we have different opinions," he said at a General Association of International Sports Federations meeting in Singapore. "Unless somebody stabs me in the back, I am a nice man. Don't forget, I am president of Taekwondo Federation." Taekwondo is an ancient martial art that originated in Korea, the 70-year-old said. Kim said he rarely practices the martial art these days because "I am old and always traveling."

Taekwondo official alleges Olympic fix By Vicki Michaelis, USA TODAY The Olympic world, already rocked by the possibility of Russian mob influence in figure skating, could be hit with another results-fixing scandal. U.S. Olympic officials are urging an investigation into allegations that the taekwondo judging at the 2000 Sydney Olympics was manipulated. A World Taekwondo Federation official told a Korean magazine he influenced referees and judges "indirectly" to favor Korean competitors in Sydney, according to a USA TODAY-commissioned translation of the article.

http://www.olympic-usa.org/sports2/ta/az_over.html
Taekwondo was first introduced into the U.S. in the 1950s. From this time until 1973 there was a broad diversity of teaching methodologies and styles, which were brought from the six major Kwan (schools) of Taekwondo in Korea. With unification initiated by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) under the leadership of Dr. Un Yong Kim, instructors in the U.S. organized and made possible the admission of Taekwondo into the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) in 1974. Under this organization, all newly established technical standards, sanctioned by the WTF, were adopted into this official form of Taekwondo in the United States. Its name was changed to the National AAU Taekwondo Union on September 9, 1984. On April 7, 1984, during the House of Delegates Meeting of the U.S. Olympic Committee, the U.S. Taekwondo Union was unanimously approved as a "Group A" member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. U.S. Taekwondo Union is a non-profit amateur sports organization that exists to develop Taekwondo in the U.S. It is the National Governing Body for Taekwondo, as well as the sole representative of the WTF in the United States. The U.S. Taekwondo Union is responsible for development and competitive programs. It sanctions U.S. tournaments and meets, administers national championships and reports to the World Taekwondo Federation and the U.S. Olympic Committee as a National Governing Body for Taekwondo in the U.S. Because of its leadership, it is fast becoming one of the largest athletic associations in the U.S. Its success is evident in the growing popularity Taekwondo has experienced in the past several years. The 1991 U.S. Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championships in Cincinnati attracted a crowd of over 10,000 people.
