    Taekwondo
is an officially acknowledged international sport originated in Korea and is today pricticed worldwide. Taekwondo uses the whole body, particularly the hands and feet. It not only strengthens one's physique, but also cultivates character via physical and mental training. coupled with techniques of discipline, taekwondo is a selfdefense martial art.
The evidence of taekwondo's existence as a systemized defense operation using the body's instinctive reflexes can be traced back to ceremonial games that were performed during religious events in the era of the ancient tribal states. During religious ceremonies such as Y nggo and Tongmaeng(a sort of thanksgiving ceremony), and Much' n(Dance to Heaven), ancient Koreans performed a unique exercise for physical training. This exercise was he original inception of taekwondo.
With this historical background, taekwondo(also known by its older name, t'aekky n) secured the status of Korean's traditional martial art. During the Three Kingdoms period, t'aekky n became a required military art; the martial art was emphasized to enhance national defense and battle capabilities, and was practiced in the Musadan(a military organization) that was responsible for national defense.
Examples of Musadan are the S nbae of Kogury and the Hwarang of Shilla. S nbae, which was founded during the era of King T'aejo of Kogury , practiced t'aekky n(also called t'aekkoni) to strengthen their country's defense capabilities. Strenthening this claim is a mural in the Muyongch'ong(Tomb of the Dancers) in southern Manchuria. Drawn on the ceiling of the burial chamber and the master chamber of the tomb was a vivid scene of a t'aekky n match.

Mural paintings found in the ruins of the royal tombs built by that dynasty show scenes of Taekwondo practice. Taekwondo was also practiced during the Silla dynasty. Korean culture and martial arts of the period were strongly influenced and enriched by the Hwarangdo, a military, educational and social organization of noble youths of the Silla dynasty. The code of honor on which the Hwarang was based was loyalty to the nation, respect and obedience to one's parents, faithfulness to one's friends, courage in battle and avoidance of unnecessary violence and killing. Archaeological findings such as mural paintings on the royal tombs of the Koguryo dynasty, the stone sculptures of pagodas of temples produced during the Silla period, and scattered descriptions in written documents show that many sparring stances, skills and formalized movements closely resemble the present stances and forms of Taekwondo. Therefore, it can be inferred that people in the three kingdoms practiced an art very like the one we study today. Koryo and YI Dynasties In the history of Koryo, Taekwondo

    History of the DCDRP Taekwondo
The D.C. Department of Recreation and Parks Taekwondo Program began in April of 1994, under the direction of Harold Houston III and Sherman Spinks. One of the objectives of the program is to expose inner city children to the Korean art and Olympic sport of Taekwondo. While providing positive male role models, we also seek to teach character building tenets of discipline, self-control, courtesy, integrity, and respect. The first classes were held at Banneker Community Center and Rosedale Recreation Center. We held the first Taekwondo Summer Camp in 1994, the first martial arts camp offered by the city. In 1995, 12 students qualified for the Junior Olympics, held in Los Angeles, CA. Despite the fact that only six competitors were able to make the trip, we brought home one gold medal and one silver medal. We took 17 competitors to the 1996 Junior Olympics in Orlando, FL. Our results improved that year, we won one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. At the 1997 Junior Olympics held in Louisville, KY, we were able to take fourteen competitors. Our students did a phenomenal job, garnering ten medals; two gold, two silver and six bronze medals. Our results in 1998 were three silver and eleven bronze medals. Our program continues to flourish in 1999. Our enrollment has grown to over 100 students and our program is registered in the United States Taekwondo Union, a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee and the national governing body for Tae Kwon Do in this country. We hope to one day see our students earn places on the U.S. Junior and Senior National Teams.

Taekwondo Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports Taekwondo, the "art of hand and foot", is a defensive martial art from the Far East. In Taekwondo, the competitor tries to score the most points. If a competitor incurs three penalties then his or her opponent wins the match. The origins of Taekwondo, which go back 2,000 years, lie in Korea. During its history, this sport has been known by various names, like Taekyon or Subak . Its official name, Taekwondo, was announced in 1955; a year later, the first championships were held. Taekwondo was included on the Olympic Games competition schedule for the first time at the Sydney Games in 2000. One contest consists of three rounds of three minutes for men, and three rounds of two minutes for women, each with one-minute intervals between rounds. The contestants, " Chung " (blue) and " Hong " (red), compete against each other by punching and kicking techniques performed on permitted parts of the body. In Taekwondo contests, kicks are allowed to the face and body, while punches are only allowed against the body. Hits "below the belt" are forbidden, while vulnerable body parts are protected by padding.

THE HISTORY OF TAE KWON DO Well over two thousand years ago, when Kyoungju was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla, in what is now Korea, two giants were carved on the tower wall of a Budhist temple. The giants are facing each other assuming a fighting stance as if they were practicing a martial art. These giants undoubtedly represent the early developments of the modern art of fighting known today as Tae Kwon Do. Records show that Tae Kwon Do was practiced as early as about 50 BC. During this time, Korea was divided into three Kingdoms: Silla, Koguryo and Baekche. Paintings on the ceiling of the Muyong-chong, a royal tomb from the Koguryo dynasty, provide us with evidence of the practice of Taek Kyon, the earliest known form of Tae Kwon Do. These as well as other paintings show unarmed combat using techniques that resemble those of modern Tae Kwon Do, specially the use of the knife hand, fist and classical fighting stances. Although Tae Kwon Do first appeared in the Koguryo kingdom, it is Silla's warrior nobility, the Hwarang, who are credited with the growth and spread of the art throughout Korea. Out of the three kingdoms, Silla was the first to be formed but it remained the smallest and less civilized. Silla's coastline was constantly under attack by Japanese pirates. King Gwahggaeto, the 19th monarch in the Koguryo dynasty line, sent armed forces to help his neighboring kingdom fight the pirates. It was at this time that Taek Kyon was first introduced to Silla's warriors class, taught directly and in secret to a few Sillan warriors by early masters of the art.

TAEKWONDO, PAST AND PRESENT Taekwondo, a self-defense art using hands and feet to repel an enemy, has been developed independently over 20 centuries in Korea. Its origins can be traced to the three kingdoms period in Korean history In Koguryo, the ancient kingdom to the north, mural paintings discovered among the ruins of the royal tombs, built between 3 AD and 427 AD, show scenes of Taekwondo practices. In the southeast portion of Korea, the smallest kingdom known as Silla, one can see two giant statues in Taekwondo stances which guard the meditating Buddha at the Sokkuram ruins located at Kyongju The earliest known style of self-defense in Korea was called Soo Bak Do. Loosely translated as the way of punching and butting, Soo Bak Do was most popular among the peasant and city dwellers as a sport and a form of unarmed self-defense Later, during the three kingdoms period, in approximately the fifth century AD, a cadre of young aristocrats came together as a special class of military leaders and warriors to defend the Korean kingdom of Silla. Known as the HwaRang or flowering youth, these Korean aristocrats combined the principles of Soo Bak Do with the adapted fighting styles of wild animals found in the Korean wilderness. The result was the creation of a martial art known as Taekwondo During the Yi dynasty, 1392-1910, the court religion was Confucianism, which encouraged scholarly and literary pursuits and ignored the martial arts. Taekwondo was still widely practiced until the start of the Japanese occupation in 1910 when all fighting arts were prohibited and forced underground.
