While some forms of Taekwondo have received criticism for not teaching enough street-effective techniques, this has more to do with commercialization, rather than with any inherent flaw in the art itself: one of the reasons Taekwondo is so popular is because of its effectiveness as a form of self-defence. :: History ::
Like almost any other martial art, Taekwondo has got his roots in the Far East. For over centuries the people over there practised several self-defense techniques, in the beginning by munks and citizens because they weren't allowed to carry or use weapons. These thechniques were kept secret within the clans and families until +/- 1850 n.C. After this their popularity began to grow and different complete styles were created. The best known Japanese martial art is Jiu-Jitsu of which evolved Judo and Karate. Besides these Japanese martial arts you still had the Chinese arts of Kempo, Kungfu and Kun-Tau; and Tae-Kyon in Korea. The fundaments of Taekwondo lay in this old Tae-Kyon style and modern Karate. Tae-Kyon was an old martial art practised by Korean noblemen (Hwarang), typical to Tae-Kyon were the many fast kicking techniques. In the fifties old-general Choi Hong Hi (9de Dan) has an idea. As a child he already knew Tae-Kyon and from his studies in Japan he had learned Karate. He thought that combining these 2 arts would result in a totally new martial art. He took the arm-techniques of Karate and the leg-techniques of Tae-Kyon and so created: "Taekwondo". Finally he also founded the International Taekwondo Federation op (I.T.F.).

The history of Taekwondo reaches back to ancient Korea. It is thought to have originated as a martial art called Tae Kyon and later, Soo Bak. It was first practiced by the soldiers of the kingdom of Koguryo and later passed on to the legendary Hwarang of Silla. Koguryo was one of the three kingdoms. Constant conflict with the Chinese to the north contributed to a culture that was predominantly martial in nature. The ruling elite was a warrior class which constantly honed their martial skills. Evidence of this can be seen on tomb murals which depict figures engaged in unarmed combat. The techniques depicted are remarkably similar to those used in modern Taekwondo. To the south, Silla and Paekche emerged as the two other kingdoms in the triumvirate. Eventually Silla became the dominant force in Korea and the peninsula became unified under one banner. Silla was noted for its famous Hwarang or "Flower of Manhood "

Ultimate Training
Welcome to Christian Taekwondo Academy
Here at Kent's Christian Taekwondo Academy we teach traditional Taekwondo based on over 2,000 years of Korean tradition. Taekwondo means the way of the foot and fist. Literally, Taekwondo practitioners are equally adept with hand strikes and kicking techniques.
Taekwondo is famous for its powerful leaping and spinning kicks, though students also learn close hand fighting, throws, joint manipulation and other basic elements of self defense. The style of Taekwondo we teach was founded by General Choi Hong Hi in the 1950s when he unified the various styles into one Korean martial arts.
Kent's Christian Taekwondo Academy teaches this martial art with emphasis on the art.
History of Mr. Kent
Mr. Harold Kent started training in the art of Taekwondo in 1976 under Mr. Richard Hoadley under ATA. After receiving his black belt he enrolled in ATA's Instructor Training Program. Mr. Kent tested under Master H.U. Lee, Master Soon Hoo Lee, and many other high ranking Leaders famous today. After the break up of the ATA many students felt loyal to their Instructors and followed them and they became members of the USTA which is still around today. Mr. Kent is now a member of Taekwondo America and still teaches Traditional Taekwondo which focuses on the Art. You can contact Mr. Kent at hnatkent@bellsouth.net

HISTORY OF TAE KWON DO
Literally translated, Tae Kwon Do means "the art of kicking and punching." Tae means "to kick" or "to strike with the foot", Kwon means "to punch" or "to strike with the fist", and Do means "art" or "way of life", creative rather than destructive in ones life. Tae Kwon Do is a very effective means of self defense and a great cardiovascular workout for in Tae Kwon Do the legs and its very powerful kicking techniques sets it apart from all other martial arts. However, Tae Kwon Do is more than a physical art but also a philosophical art and a state of mind. Over 2,000 years ago, Tae Kwon Do's earliest records first appeared in the Koguryo kingdom as mural paintings back in about 50 B.C. on the ceilings of the Muyongchong, a royal tomb. These paintings show various unarmed techniques similar to modern day Tae Kwon Do. At the time, Korea was divided into three kingdoms: Silla, which was founded on the Kyongju plain in 57 B.C.; Koguryo, founded in the Yalu River Valley in 37 B.C.; and Paekche, founded in the southwestern area of the Korean peninsula in 18 B.C. In the capital of Silla, Kyongju, carved in the tower wall are two giants facing each other in Tae Kwon Do stances. This indicates that Tae Kwon Do was practiced before these tombs were built in the years A.D. 3 and A.D. 427. The earliest known form of Tae Kwon Do was known as Taek Kyon.

Tae Kwon Do History: The Korean Art of Self-Defense
Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art that has been in existence for over 2,000 years, and to commemorate the national sport of Korea, Tae Kwon Do has become an Official Olympic Game this year 2000.
However, Tae Kwon Do is more than just a sport, it is also a way of life. At Master B.C. Kim's Taw Kwon Do school, we combine the study of self defense with the practice of the sport and exercise. Muscles are toned, flexibility is increased, and reflexes are sharpened as the mind and body learn to work together. Tae Kwon Do students learn a proven method of self discipline, and through this study they develop both the physical strength and inner confidence they will need as they progress from the beginning stages of the white belt to the ultimate victory of the black belt! Tae Kwon Do is a sport for everyone. All can benefit from its aerobic style trainingyoung, old, men, women, singles, and families. All start at the same place, and with determination and spirit, anyone can climb to their highest levels of potential.

TaeKwonDo , an ancient Korean Martial Art, is the fastest growing Martial Art in the world.
We know that TaeKwonDo existed as far back as 50 BC, more than 2000 years ago. In these ancient times only warriors were allowed to use it. You may wonder how we know that TaeKwonDo existed so long ago. The reason is because archaeologists found pictures of people practicing TaeKwonDo on the ceiling of an ancient royal tomb in Korea called the Muyong-Chong.
Today, TaeKwonDo is the national sport of Korea. As with all martial arts, TaeKwonDo teaches punching, blocking and kicking techniques, but TaeKwonDo is unique in its emphasis on accuracy and power. It was a demonstration sport in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and an official event in the 2000 Olympic Games (Steven Lopez, from Texas, brought home a Gold Medal).
You don't have to be an Olympic althlete to enjoy the many benefits of TaeKwonDo. It trains both body and mind. It is a sport for everyone - men, women, and children. It is a wonderful way to gain self-confidence and strength.

The History of Taekwondo By Scott Shaw Taekwondo, "The Way of the Fist and Foot," is an advanced systems of martial arts known for its aggressive linear attacks and its refined kicking techniques. Taekwondo is the most practiced system of martial art in the world and was introduced as an Olympic Sport in 1984. What is known as Taekwondo today, has gone through a long process of evolution since its inception at the end of World War II. In post war Korea, with brutal Japanese occupation lifted, Korea went through a period of cultural revitalization. During this process, the martial arts, which were banned by the occupying forces, found a new resurgence. The Korean people, who swore to never be over powered again, embraced the proliferation of the martial arts through out the nation. From this, came the birth of the modern Korean martial arts. The Birth of Taekwondo At the beginning of the twentieth century Korea was militarily occupied by Japan. This annexation was not lifted until Japan's defeat at the end of World War II. With brutal Japanese occupation lifted, Korea went through a period of rapid cultural revitalization. During this process, the indigenous martial arts, which had been banned by the occupying forces, found a new resurgence. The Korean peoples, swearing to never be over taken by a foreign power again, embraced this proliferation of the martial arts throughout their nation. From this came the birth of the modern Korean martial arts.

    History of Tae Kwon Do
Introduction Historical Background Credits Introduction Taekwondo is the name of the martial art turned modern international sport which has been independently developed over about 20 centuries in Korea. The main feature of Taekwondo is that it is a free-fighting combat sport using bare hands and feet to repel an opponent. All of its activities are based on defensive spirit since Taekwondo was developed as a defence against enemy attacks. In old days people living simple lives lacked physical fitness and their bodies became bent in their old age. Taekwondo also served to improve health, physical fitness and poise of the people practising it. Our belief is that Taekwondo-trained men are self confident, not only in physical aspects but also in their mental discipline, because they have developed superior techniques for personal defence by using their entire bodies. For a Taekwondo man, his entire body is a weapon, and he is easily able to attack and beat off an aggressor with hands, fists, elbows, knees, feet or any other part of his body. The most important fact about Taekwondo as a martial art sport is that it is not only a superior art of self-defence, but it adds remarkable bon sens to its practitioners. Self-confidence makes people generous in their attitudes toward weaker people. They can stand equally against any opponent, but their code forbids unfair assaults or unnecessary use of force. The practice of Taekwondo gives an individual the mental attitude of modesty. The virtues of modesty and generosity are fundamentally based on self-confidence.
