Leigh Fazzina, a certified Johhny G Spinning Instructor in Philadelphia, says it can take up to four weeks to feel comfortable. "One must start slow and build up," she says.     Tae Bo (pronounced tie bow) was developed by Blanks in the basement of his home. He recognized martial arts were more popular with men than women. In order to get more women involved he devised a fun workout routine using a combination of martial art moves, dance and boxing. Blanks conceived the idea by combining Tae Kwon Do, karate, boxing, ballet, and hip-hop dancing with basic exercise motions. The result is Tae Bo, which stands for Total Awareness Excellent Body Obedience. He used the opinions of his wife and children as a springboard, and later introduced the exercise to others, including Paula Abdul, who encouraged him to open a studio.

    Lisa Bourazak certainly doesn't think of herself as a weak woman, but she had to come to terms with a weakness when she had trouble climbing hills during mountain-biking races.
    "You need a smooth stroke with each leg for cycling, and it turns out my right leg is weaker than my left," says Bourazak, 32, a Chicago-area physical therapist.
    Active women notoriously have weak links in their abdominal and back muscles, and hips, knees, forearms and shoulders. Like a classic Achilles' heel, a weak link may eventually undermine your strength. Often, one side is stronger than the other, which throws your body out of whack.
    A biking trainer identified why one leg outdid the other: Bourazak's hips were too weak to properly stabilize her body. Her revised workout includes one-legged strengthening with hip extensions, single-leg squats, lunges (to make her hips work without using her upper body), plyometrics (jump training), and agility and leg-strengthening exercises.
    "I definitely feel better this year," says Bourazak, who races most Sundays. "I'm climbing hills better, I last longer, and I've moved up a division, from beginner to sport class."
