    Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, March 20, 2004; Page C01 Jasna Reed, star player for the United States Olympic table tennis team, would like to clear up a couple of things about the romantic lives of big-time Ping-Pong players. First of all, she says, she is the ex-wife of only one of her teammates, not two. She never actually married Barney Reed. She merely took his last name back in the days when they were dating. Second, life on the Olympic table tennis team is not really like Peyton Place. "It's Melrose Place," she says, laughing. You may think of Ping-Pong as a goofy game that bored adolescents play in suburban basements until they lose the ball under the radiator. But talk to Reed and her teammates and you learn that table tennis is an intense sport with all the earmarks of big-time athletics steroid scandals, colorful characters, Byzantine romances and groupies. Also, there's a lot of glue sniffing. "We're all a little mental," Reed says. "Look at old movies. Where do they play table tennis in movies?" she asks.

Table Tennis First Olympic Appearance: 1988 by Mike Morrison With over 40 million competitive players and millions more playing recreationally, table tennis is the world's largest "participation" sport. Olympic table tennis is just like the game you're used to playing on the dusty table in your basement, except it's probably just a tad faster. Anyone who's seen Forrest Gump can attest to how fast the game can be. Balls in elite competitions can travel at speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour (almost 100 mph).
      Did You Know?
Rules of table tennis clearly state that socks must be worn at all times.
Also known as ping-pong because of the noise heard when the ball hits the paddle and then the table, table tennis was originally played with balls made of either cork or rubber and with rackets made of cardboard. Today, the balls are celluloid and the rackets are generally wood with only the finest rubbers and glues. In 2000, the International Table Tennis Federation adopted the 11-point game rules for international play. A match is determined by the best of five, seven, or nine games. A game is won by the first side to reach 11 points, but you have to win by at least two. In order to avoid long, drawn-out games, if a game isn't won in 10 minutes, then it's time to implement the "expedite system." This means that if the receiving player or pair makes 13 good returns, the receiver shall score a point.

Table Tennis Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports The exact origin of table tennis is unknown. It first appeared in England in the 1890s as a sport for aristocrats and slowly spread to the general population. The sport was originally named "ping pong", after the sound the ball makes when it hits the table. Ping pong was used as a commercial name by the J. Jaques & Son Ltd. company. In 1936, the term "ping pong" was replaced by the term "Table Tennis", during the Prague Convention.
The first clubs were founded during the twenties and the sport rapidly gained popularity around the world. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was founded in 1926 during the 1st World Championship.
