"Twiddling" is allowed these days but is less effective as a weapon in that the rubber on either side of the bat must be of a different colour. Today, players stick rubbers on to their bats at the last minute, the nature of certain glues enabling greater speeds of play to be reached. Balls can travel at 160kph. Some glues are specifically banned from competition, not only because they can increase play speed by up to 30kph but because they emit dangerous gases. James Gibb, an English table tennis player, is credited with bringing the celluloid ball to the game. He had brought the children's toy home from the US in 1901 and decided that it would be ideal for table tennis. The game grew rapidly in Europe and the International Table Tennis Federation was founded in 1926, a year before the first world championships were held. One of the founding members of the ITTF, Hungary, dominated the sport until the 1950s, when Sweden, combining the best techniques taught by coaches around the world, took control, with China and Japan the challengers.

Table Tennis First Olympic Appearance: 1988 by Mike Morrison With over 40 million competitive players and millions more playing recreationally, table tennis is the world's largest "participation" sport. Olympic table tennis is just like the game you're used to playing on the dusty table in your basement, except it's probably just a tad faster. Anyone who's seen Forrest Gump can attest to how fast the game can be. Balls in elite competitions can travel at speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour (almost 100 mph).
    Did You Know?
Rules of table tennis clearly state that socks must be worn at all times.
Also known as ping-pong because of the noise heard when the ball hits the paddle and then the table, table tennis was originally played with balls made of either cork or rubber and with rackets made of cardboard. Today, the balls are celluloid and the rackets are generally wood with only the finest rubbers and glues. In 2000, the International Table Tennis Federation adopted the 11-point game rules for international play. A match is determined by the best of five, seven, or nine games. A game is won by the first side to reach 11 points, but you have to win by at least two. In order to avoid long, drawn-out games, if a game isn't won in 10 minutes, then it's time to implement the "expedite system." This means that if the receiving player or pair makes 13 good returns, the receiver shall score a point.

Table Tennis Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports The exact origin of table tennis is unknown. It first appeared in England in the 1890s as a sport for aristocrats and slowly spread to the general population. The sport was originally named "ping pong", after the sound the ball makes when it hits the table. Ping pong was used as a commercial name by the J. Jaques & Son Ltd. company. In 1936, the term "ping pong" was replaced by the term "Table Tennis", during the Prague Convention.
The first clubs were founded during the twenties and the sport rapidly gained popularity around the world. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was founded in 1926 during the 1st World Championship. Sandwich rubber? Long pips? Loop kill? These terms, along with "Seemiller grip," "five ball attack" and "counterdrive," are all familiar parlance to the serious table tennis player and enthusiast. Chances are that you'll be hearing them a lot in Chinatown this Sunday. A relatively young sport, table tennis was probably first practiced in the late 19 th century (the term "Ping-Pong," which is used in China, was trademarked by Parker Brothers in 1901). The sport has been steadily growing in the U.S., and has received an added boost with the establishment of an annual tournament here in Lower Manhattan. This Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., the First Annual CCBA New York Table Tennis Championship will take place in Chinatown, at the flagship facility of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. Founded in 1887, the CCBA is the oldest social services organization serving the Chinese-American community, with nearly ninety branches around the U.S.

J.J. Keane, then one of Ireland's leading sports administrators was elected to the International Olympic Committee in 1922 and it is now generally accepted that the Irish Olympic Council as it was known at the outset, came to existence in 1922 but due to the loss of the minutes of the early meetings of the Council, the exact date is now not known. Ireland was given formal recognition as an independent nation in the Olympic Movement at the IOC session in Paris in 1924 and it was at the Paris Games that Ireland made its first appearance in an Olympic Games as an independent nation. No medals in the sporting events were won by Ireland at the Paris games but Jack Yeats was awarded an Olympic silver medal for his painting "Swimming" in the Olympic Arts division and Oliver St. John Gogarty was awarded a bronze medal for his "Ode to the Tailteann Games" in the Literature division.
