Tajik table tennis star chases the American dream
Monty Forman/Columbia News Service Nison Aronov, the eight-time Tajik table tennis champion, is raising the profile of ping pong in America. Avery Johnson
Columbia News Service
May. 14, 2004 12:28 PM Nison Aronov, the eight-time Tajik table tennis champion, is staging a quiet, Brooklyn-based movement to popularize Ping-Pong with the help of America's vibrant immigrant community.
The future of American table tennis just might lurk behind the yellow taxicab semi-permanently parked in a shadowy basement garage in the heart of immigrant Brooklyn.
From deep within, the hollow pop of Ping-Pong balls hitting the cement floor drowns out a disco rendition of "The Nutcracker." A sign on the office door reads in Russian: "KGB, Your Documents Please." Inside is the Brooklyn Table Tennis Club, which opened 10 months ago with 10 tables and has become New York's beacon for displaced Ping-Pong greats.
The taxi belongs to Nison Aronov, the eight-time national table tennis champion of Tajikistan, arguably the best lobber in the United States and the owner and unofficial tsar of the club. Aronov believes the next table tennis stars will be born in his club, which draws on the Ping-Pong passion of new immigrants from Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and China.

About Our Sport TT Terminology Tips ... E-Mail Directory HISTORY OF TABLE TENNIS
Table Tennis is believed to have begun in England during the 12 th century as a spin-off of "Royal Tennis" and was popular as a parlor game in Victorian homes. Equipment was made from various homemade articles, such as cardboard for rackets, books as nets and the ball was usually a ball of string. It is believed that in the late 1880’s, an American sporting goods manufacturer by the name of Parker Brothers, tried their hands at making "official" equipment. At that time, Parker Brothers was already exporting "Indoor Tennis" equipment to England. Equipment was still very primitive and balls were then solid rubber or cork and usually covered with material to prevent damage to furniture. Plastic balls were introduced to the game after an Englishman named James Gibb, visited America and discovered children playing with small plastic toy balls. He brought some back to England and used the plastic balls for table tennis. To his surprise, it gave an unexpected, overwhelming boost to this already popular game. After years of being called Gossima, Film-Flam and Whiff-Whaff, the name "Ping Pong" was finally adopted as a trade name by Parker Brothers because of the new sound these plastic balls made when they hit the table and the racket. Introduction of the
International Table Tennis Federation This popular table game began to spread wildly and was introduced to Japan, China, Korea, India and South Africa, presumably by British Army Officers who were stationed there. By 1910, "Ping Pong" had also become very popular in Central Europe.

The history of table tennis
The origin of table tennis has never been exactly pinpointed, even though it's a relatively young sport, younger than lawn tennis and not much older than basketball.
The earliest known form of the sport, called indoor tennis, was played in the early 1880s by British army officers in India and South Africa, using lids from cigar boxes as paddles and rounded corks from wine bottles as balls, with a row of books set up across the middle of a table to form the net.
Other versions developed in England during the 1890s, known variously as "whiff whaff" and "gossima," and Parker Brothers began manufacturing an indoor tennis kit that included a portable net that could be set up on a table, a small ball covered with netting, and miniature paddles.
James Gibb, an Englishman who visited the United States in 1900, brought some hollow celluloid balls home and began playing indoor tennis with friends, using the new balls. Gibb apparently came up with the name "ping pong," representing the sounds of the ball hitting the paddle and then the table.
However, an English manufacturer of sporting goods, John Jacques, registered "Ping Pong" as a trade name in 1901 and sold American rights to Parker Brothers, who came out with a new kit under that name.

Fifty Glorious Years in Table Tennis This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese national table tennis team. It has achieved a brilliant record not only with many individual world championships but also with a clean sweep of the honours at the World Table Tennis Championships on three occasions in 1981, in 1995 and again in 2001. The squad is now working all out to prepare for the coming table tennis events at the 14th Asian Games. These will be held from September 29 to October 14 in Pusan, South Korea. The national team’s head coach Cai Zhenhua is hoping for four or even five gold medals. China’s third clean sweep was at the 46th World Table Tennis Championships in Osaka last year. It was at these championships that Adham Sharara, president of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) said, “The championships have become a national game as the Chinese players are just competing amongst themselves.” These remarks by the ITTF boss were made in the hope of “spurring the rest of the world to wake up and make a concerted effort to aspire to reach the level of China.”

Francais Deutch Italianio Portuguese Introduction Reflex Sports began to cover International World-Class Table Tennis is 1985. Since then we have covered the World Team and Individual Championships in 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999 and the 2000 World Team Championships. We have also covered the 1990, 1992, 1994 European Championships. In addition, in association with the International Table Tennis Federation, we were the official video producers for the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Competitions. As you have seen, we have full length videos of all these competitions and championships. TABLE TENNIS BEYOND IMAGINATION Very simply, whenever anyone not familiar with the sport, thinks of Table Tennis, they think of backyard ping pong. The purpose of this video is to show that Table Tennis, at its highest level is beyond anything anyone could ever imagine it to be... so, through all our 15 years of coverage, we have accumulated over 500 hours of footage. We chronicled and catalogued the best of this footage and were able to narrow it down to the greatest shots, finishes, points of this era. Through a very time intensive effort, we were able to narrow down the thousands of great points down to what our expert staff feels are the 40 top points of this era. This is the most important Table Tennis video ever made and is perhaps the greatest promotional tool the sport has ever had. When you see this video, you will finally have a showcase of the sport that you can share with your non-believing friends.
