History of Table Tennis
For history of table tennis in a particular country, see the Country In Focus page. Table Tennis likely began as a social hobby in England toward the end of the 1800's. Dining-room tables and balls of cork made up some of the early equipment that was used. These early pioneers may have referred to their sport as gossima flim-flam , or ping-pong . Around the turn of the century, the game underwent a few changes in England. One person introduced a celluloid ball to the game, while another added pimpled rubber to the wooden paddle. The recreational game lost some of its popularity until various groups around Europe revived it as "table tennis" in the 1920s. The International Table Tennis Association (ITTF) was formed in 1926. The sport soon spread to Japan and other Asian nations. The Japanese dominated the sport for much of the 50s and 60s, however the Chinese soon closed the gap. China alone dominated the sport for much of the 60's and 70's, but after Table Tennis became an Olympic event in the 1980's, other nations such as Sweden and South Korea have joined the top ranks.

Table Tennis
The origin of table tennis has never been exactly pinpointed, even though it's a relatively young sport, younger than lawn tennis and not much older than basketball. The earliest known form of the sport, called indoor tennis, was played in the early 1880s by British army officers in India and South Africa, using lids from cigar boxes as paddles and rounded corks from wine bottles as balls, with a row of books set up across the middle of a table to form the net. Other versions developed in England during the 1890s, known variously as "whiff whaff" and "gossima," and Parker Brothers began manufacturing an indoor tennis kit that included a portable net that could be set up on a table, a small ball covered with netting, and miniature paddles. James Gibb, an Englishman who visited the United States in 1900, brought some hollow celluloid balls home and began playing indoor tennis with friends, using the new balls. Gibb apparently came up with the name "ping pong," representing the sounds of the ball hitting the paddle and then the table. However, an English manufacturer of sporting goods, John Jacques, registered "Ping Pong" as a trade name in 1901 and sold American rights to Parker Brothers, who came out with a new kit under that name.

OLYMPIC HISTORY Table tennis made its Olympic debut in 1988, when the inaugural tournament was marked by the failure in the men's singles of all of the top five seeded players to make the semi-finals. The world champion Jiang Jialing, of China, was beaten by Erik Lindh, of Sweden, who went on to win the bronze medal, while Yoo Man-kyu and Kim Ki-taik made it an all-South Korean final, from which Yoo emerged the victor.

History of U.S. Table Tennis has quickly to acknowledge the not so civil wars fought and re-fought over the use of the two terms. Even as I begin here in the beginning to give you a brief commentary on the origin of the Sport, the divisiveness can't help but be apparent. Ping-Pong: The Game, Its Tactics And Laws (a re-write of his 1928 Manual), Cornelius G. Schaad (Schaad as in SHAD-ow), of New York's Westchester Ping-Pong coteriea lawyer by profession and in Ping-Pong a blatant propagandist for the Salem, Massachusetts-based, games-oriented Parker Brothers and their American Ping-Pong Association suggests that the game's origin was not in England, as is generally recognized, but in the U.S. Table Tennis: The Early Years. Shell Book of Firsts (5) points out, the first table tennis sets were manufactured by the English firm of J. Jaques and Sonand it's to a connection with this firm that Schaad alludes (27-28).

Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Table Tennis A guide to the Olympic sport of Table Tennis. Technical details Players toss a coin to decide who will serve. The serve changes after every five serves. Points are scored by the player who wins each rally. The game is won by a player reaching 21 points, unless the game goes to 20 all, in which case the winning player must be two points clear. Matches are determined by the best of three sets. At the knock-out stage, it is the best of five sets. Over the years, there have been many changes to the bat. These have included: the sponge layers between the blade and rubber; use of different rubbers the same colour, which gave rise to players 'twiddling' the bat below the surface of the table and concealing the type of spin. Although 'twiddling' is now permitted at the Games, the bats have different coloured rubbers on each side. But they must be at least 85% natural wood. The latest advances is the use of fast glues, which remain wet, because they are used to fix the rubber and are designed to give greater speed. However, there is a ban on the most toxic glues being used. Tables measure 2.74m in length, 1.525m wide and 0.760m high. The table surface must be dark coloured and is usually blue or green. The net must be 15.25cm above the table. The ball is made of celluloid and weighs 2.5gm.
