Initial Real Results for Cheap 3D Scanning
Nicholas Phillips
I now have some initial real results for my implementations of Drs Bouguet and Perona's technique for 3D Photography on your desk . This is a followup to my first announcement The main thing to report is I have finally gotten a digital camera (a wonderful Canon PowerShot S110 ) and have thus been able to do tests on scanning real 3D objects. Keep in mind, these are initial results, gotten in one evening. Took me a couple of attempts with different lamps. Finally had success with the $10 Target halogen lamp. But even with this lamp, my shadow lines are fuzzy. Need to remove the inner reflector from the lamp.
Without further ado, here is a Blender rendering of a couple scanned meshes:
and a screen shot of the meshes in Blender:
and also a photo of a similar scene:
Some comments:
  • Overall, my code does work,
  • but noise is still a problem, particularly evident on the rendering;
  • Vertex coloring! Since I have color images, why not assign the colors;
  • The vertex coloring helps the Blender "Potato mode" view look nice;

    The new building:
    On 11th July 2000 the ground breaking ceremony occurred and work began on the construction of a new building for Microsoft Research in West Cambridge. This page will give you information about the new building and also about computer vision research at Microsoft Cambridge Research: In particular we have taken on the challenge of reconstructing three-dimensional models of buildings from sets of two or more still images (see the discussion on three dimensional photography below). The aim is to establish a set of web cams observing the construction process and recreate a 3D model of the building site (see the discussion of virtual tourism below). So why are we doing it and why? Three Dimensional Photography: Suppose that when you used a camera it gave you a 3D model of what you had photographed rather than the normal 2D picture. The idea of trying to make pictures look more 3D is not new, it was first proposed by Sir Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875) of Wheatstone Bridge fame. In 1838 he presented the theory of stereoscopic vision to the Royal Society. Wheatstone achieved the effect of a 3D photograph using a device known as the stereoscope (An interesting history of photography is here ). The thrust of our research is to create a 3D model from a set of still 2D images that you could fly around using a suitable graphics engine on your PC. This is an interesting but difficult task on these pages we will tell you a little of the successes and problems.

    INTRODUCTION
    Recent advances in computer hardware has brought efficient rendering of realistic 3D models on an increasing number of consumer products (i.e. game cube, cellular phones, etc.). Only a few years ago this was possible only on high end visualization workstations.
    3D Photography
    covered the process of automatically creating 3D texture mapped models of objects. We studied relevant and recent literature on a comprehensive range of techniques including mesh generation from range and volume data; range registration and camera calibration; image based rendering techniques including lumigraph and light field rendering; and voxel coloring.

    10/01/02: All 10 project descriptions are online!
    Summary of Content:
    This class will be about the interaction between computer vision and computer graphics. Specifically, we will study four related problems:
  • 3D photography: recovery of shape and texture of the scene objects to create a view independent representation of the scene Inverse rendering: recovery of scene parameters like surface reflection properties and the ambient illumination that are important to rerender the scene under novel lighting conditions and spatial scene configurations Motion Capture: recovery of the motion models and parameters of the objects in the scene to enable retargeting of motions to other objects and animate the scene objects using new motion parameters. Camera Design: What camera design optimally facilitates the solution to the three problems above?
  • Goals for this Class:
    The goal of this class is to give the student a feeling for the difficulties involved when one tries to extract information about the world from image sequences. Therefore, we will study the image formation pipeline, starting from representations for the shape of objects and their surface properties, up to the accurate models to the lens system and ccd architecture of modern cameras. We will not limit our study to conventional pinhole cameras, but we will also study more general images and cameras that are better suited for processing by computers then conventional images. Having understood the image formation process, we will then study in a series of projects to what extent and under what assumptions it is possible to "invert" the image formation pipeline and recover the scene parameters. More specifically during this class the union of all the projects (

    This challenge is part of The second International Symposium on 3DPVT (3D Data Processing, Visualization, and Transmission) which will be held on September 6 to 9, 2004 in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece. We will make available to the public three sets of up to 33 synchronized and calibrated image sequences that observe non-rigidly moving objects such as faces and hands in action. The goal is to make an accurate three-dimensional reconstruction of the shape and motion observed in the video sequences. The submitted reconstructions will be judged by a panel of established researchers and the winner will receive an award. These datasets were captured by Patrick Baker and Jan Neumann from the Computer Vision Lab at the University of Maryland in the Keck Laboratory for Human Motion Analysis. The support of the W.M. Keck Foundation is gratefully acknowledged. The data sets consist of a collection of compressed tar files containing the individual frames of the image sequences in png format and the corresponding calibration data which was computed by Patrick Baker using a novel fully automatic multi-camera calibration method If you have any questions please email us at challenge AT 3d-photography.org

    Introduction A photograph can be very beautiful but is always limited to projecting a view onto a two-dimensional plane (the film/photo). Stereo photography is a technique to make two photographs of the same subject, from slightly different positions. For normal close, small objects, the two positions should differ approximately by the human eye distance (about 10cm or 4"). Weather photography is no difference, and in fact you can create remarkable three-dimensional pictures by exaggerating the distance of photography locations. Because most subjects of the weather are relatively far away (several kilometers for a cloudy sky, for instance), increasing the distance creates very clear three-dimensional pictures. This stereo pair shows a cumulus sky from an airplane, which is ideal for stereo photography. How to do stereo photography The technique is very simple - as outlined in the introduction above. Care must be taken to photograph the same sky with exactly the same settings and do the two exposures as soon as possible after eachother, in order to photograph the sky statically. You can try this technique with any subject you want. Here are a few guidelines:
