Syria wins seat on U.N. Security Council
UNITED NATIONS (CNN) Syria won a nonpermanent, two-year seat Monday on the United Nations Security Council. Syria received 160 votes, well above the required two-thirds margin of the U.N. General Assembly, and will take its seat January 1. The vote was by secret ballot. In Washington, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher refused to say how the United States voted, citing a long-standing U.S. policy. But, he said, "The United States will continue to express our concerns regarding terrorism with the Syrian government. "The United States will also continue to expect Syria to meet its obligation to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms to fulfill all Security Council resolutions and to contribute to international peace and security, responsibilities that are only increased by its membership on the Security Council," Boucher said. The United States did not launch a public campaign to deny Syria a seat, U.S. officials told CNN.

Iraqi oil still flowing to Syria despite tough talk
LONDON, England (Reuters) Iraq is maintaining illicit oil sales to Syria to secure vital hard currency despite Baghdad's vow to cut off most exports in its latest showdown with the United Nations over sanctions, industry sources said Monday. The sources said Syria was still exporting oil at a higher rate, evidence that it continues to receive extra supplies from Iraq via a recently refurbished pipeline. "There are no signs that Syria is selling less oil to its customers. They have not notified customers of any real cuts," said one industry source. "We have not received a telex from Syria saying there is less oil available. They are still getting oil from Iraq," said another. Diplomats also said that major producer Iraq was still delivering crude to neighbor Syria. The industry sources said Iraq currently was probably delivering about 100,000-150,000 barrels per day to Syria.

The unearthed clay tablets speak about trade exchange between Tel al-Beidar position and other neighboring sites.
Sources at the Syrian directorate for antiquities and museums said the number of the unveiled cuneiform tablets at this site reached 200, speaking about economic, trade and judicial issues and adding that architectural formations were also unearthed, as well as two temples dating to the same era.
Moreover, in previous explorations, the team unearthed a palace built of clay including an integrated architectural unit, a rectangular temple and wide walls surrounding the city as well as seven gates linking Tel Beidar to neighboring cities. Previous Stories:

    January 4, 2000
Web posted at: 8:22 p.m. EST (0122 GMT) SHEPHERDSTOWN, West Virginia (CNN) U.S. President Bill Clinton brought together Israel's prime minister and the foreign minister of Syria for an hour-long face-to-face meeting aimed at setting their countries on a course toward peace. U.S. State Department spokesman James P. Rubin called Tuesday's one hour tri-lateral session "more of a general discussion" than negotiations over hard issues. But he said Clinton, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa had "a very constructive and productive discussion that put the process clearly on track." ALSO

Special Report WASHINGTON (CNN) The Bush administration and the Syrian government over the weekend traded allegations on whether Syria possesses weapon of mass destruction, and whether Syria is harboring fleeing members of Saddam Hussein's regime. President Bush, in remarks to reporters, said "We believe there are chemical weapons in Syria" and that the Iraqi neighbor "needs to cooperate" with the United States and its coalition partners. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said in a TV interview that Syria had been busing fighters into Iraq for a while, but coalition forces turned them away. He also said "there's no question" that members of Saddam's regime fled to Syria.
