Syria Table of Contents PRESENT-DAY SYRIA constitutes only a small portion of the ancient geographical Syria. Until the twentieth century, when Western powers began to carve out the rough contours of the contemporary states of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel, the whole of the settled region at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea was called Syria, the name given by the ancient Greeks to the land bridge that links three continents. For this reason, historians and political scientists usually use the term Greater Syria to denote the area in the prestate period. Historically, Greater Syria rarely ruled itself, primarily because of its vulnerable position between the Mediterranean Sea and the desert. As a marchland between frequently powerful empires on the north, east, and south, Syria was often a battlefield for the political destinies of dynasties and empires. Unlike other parts of the Middle East, Greater Syria was prized as a fertile cereal-growing oasis. It was even more critical as a source of the lumber needed for building imperial fleets in the preindustrial period. A recurrent theme of Greater Syria's history has been the encounters between Eastern and Western powers on its soil. Even in the ancient period, it was the focus of a continual dialectic, both intellectual and bellicose, between the Middle East and the West. During the medieval period this dialectic was intensified as it became colored by diametrically opposed religious points of view regarding rights to the land. The Christian Byzantines contended with Arabs, and later the Christian Crusaders competed with Muslim Arabs, for land they all held sacred.

Early History
Until the 20th cent. the term Syria generally denoted those lands of the Levant, or eastern littoral of the Mediterranean, that correspond to modern Syria and Lebanon, most of Israel and Jordan, W Iraq, and N Saudi Arabia. Three geographical factors have played major parts in determining the history of Syria : its location on the trade and military routes, its varied topography, and the encroaching desert. Syria has always been an object of conquest, and it has been held by foreign powers during much of its history. One of the earliest settlements was probably at Ugarit ; human habitation at Tell Hamoukar in NE Syria dates to at least 4000 B.C. The Amorites , coming c.2100 B.C. from the Arabian peninsula, were the first important Semitic people to settle in the region, and they established many small states. From the 15th to the 13th cent.

History of Syria in Ottoman Times
The early Ottoman governors paid much attention to agriculture, and their fiscal system was designed to encourage it. In parts of Syria it flourished during the 16th and 17th centuries, and, apart from cereals for local consumption, cotton and silk were produced for export. Aleppo and Damascus not only were important centres of handicrafts but also served as market towns for the desert and countryside and as stages on the desert routes to the Persian Gulf and Persia. Aleppo also was an important centre of trade with Europe; French and English had largely replaced Italian merchants, and there grew up also a class of Syrian Christian and Jewish merchants who developed contacts with Egypt, Italy, and France.
At the beginning of the 19th century Syria had some islands of prosperity: Aleppo and Damascus (each with roughly 100,000 inhabitants), Mount Lebanon, and certain other secluded districts. In general, however, the country was in decay, the small towns subsisting on local trade, the villagers receding in face of the Bedouin. The Ottoman hold on the country was at its weakest. In Damascus and Aleppo the governors were scarcely able to control the population of city or countryside. The prince of Lebanon, BashYr II(1788-1840), who had been installed by al-Jazz(r and remained quiet while al-Jazz(r was alive, gradually extended his control over districts beyond Lebanon. In 1810 the Wahh(bYs from central Arabia threatened Damascus.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Latakia - History Latakia Latakia's history goes back a long way. In the 2 nd Millennium BC Latakia was part of the Kingdom of Ugarit. Ugarit a Syro-Phoenician kingdom is being excavated at the moment about 20 km north of Latakia. Then it fell to the Assyrians, and then the Persians. Later it became an important part of the Seleucid kingdom and with corresponding Antioch, Apamea, and Seleucia-on-Tigris was considered one of the most important cities of this kingdom. It was named after the mother of Seleucos I the founder of this kingdom, whose name was Laodicea. It then fell in the hands of all the following occupiers of Syria and became part of the Roman and Byzantine empires, the Islamic dynasties, and played an important role in the Crusader wars. It was mentioned in the Bible in connection with the Apostles. Devastating earthquakes in 494 and 555 badly damaged Latakia, but it was rebuilt by Justinian. Latakia was taken in AD 638 by the Arabs, in 1097 - 1103 by the crusaders, and in 1188 by Saladin. Subsequently the town was administered by Christians from Tripoli, Muslims from Hama, and the Ottoman Turks; it came within the French mandate of Syria and Lebanon in 1920.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Aleppo - History The second largest city of Syria, Aleppo, lays claim to being the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. In the centre of Aleppo is the magnificent Aleppo Citadel, considered to be the oldest in the world, the Great Mosque, and the Aleppo souk, which is the longest covered souk in the world. There are over 200 'Dead Cities' within a radius of 60km around Aleppo, some of which date back to the first century AD. Aleppo, going back to the early 2 nd millennium BC, competes with Damascus on being the oldest inhabited city in the world. It appeared in the Hittite archives in central Anatolia and in the archives of Mari on the Euphrates. Aleppo (Halab) was the capital of the Amorite kingdom of Yamkhad, in the middle centuries of that millennium. It was the focus of the Hittites in their overthrow of the Amorite Dynasty, in 1595 BC. In about 1000 BC, Northern Syria was taken over by the Sea Peoples; however Aleppo remained a small Neo-Hittite state. From 800 BC to 400 BC, the Assyrians followed by the Persians were in control of Syria. In 333 BC, it was taken over by Alexander the Great, and was kept under the Greeks for 300 years in the form of the Seleucid Empire. During this time Aleppo was an important trading city, between the Euphrates and Antioch.

http://www.damascus-online.com/history/brief.htm
A Brief History of Modern Syria Syria fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1516 and remained a part of their Ottoman Empire for four centuries. During this period, Syria witnessed great deterioration in economic, social, and political fields. In 1916, the Arabs took the opportunity of World War I to start their revolution against the Turkish rule with British help. On 6 May 1916, the Ottoman authorities hanged tens of Syrian nationalists in Damascus and Beirut, accusing them of resistance. The Arab revolution armies under leadership of Sharif Hussein of Mecca soon achieved victory over the Turks, and in early 1918, Arab and British armies entered Damascus ending 400 years of occupation. Later in 1918, Syria was declared an independent kingdom under King Faisal I, son of Sharif Hussein. However, France and Britain had their own plans in mind. In an agreement known as the Sykes-Picot agreement, they decided to divide the Middle East into French and British spheres of influence. Syria was to be put under French mandate. In early 1920, French troops landed on the Syrian coast, after several battles with poorly equipped Syrian rebels, they managed to get the country under their control. In 1923, the League of Nation officially agreed on the French mandate over Syria. The Syrians decided to resist the new occupiers. In 1925 they declared their revolution against the mandate. Several battles took place in the southern Jabal al-Arab and Damascus region. The capital was severely damaged during French air raids in retaliation for the city's support for rebels. It was until 1936 when France finally accepted to give Syria partial independence according to the Franco-Syrian treaty signed in Paris, but French troops remained on the Syrian soil and continued to influence the Syrian policies. During World War II, Syria witnessed military confrontation between French troops loyal to the Vichy government, allied with the Germans, and Free French troops allied with the British. In 1941, the British army, along with its French allies, occupied the country, and promised full independence when the war ends.

What is the history and current issues involving Syria and the Golan Heights?
The Golan Heights extends like a 15 x 32 mile finger between the borders of Lebanon, Jordan and Syria in the northeastern section of Israel. Israel's highest mountain, snow-capped Mt. Hermon (7,296 ft.), is located to the north of the 444 square mile plateau. The plateau was once actively volcanic and the northernmost points remain weathered and desolate. When held by Israeli forces, the highland has little military importance. If controlled by a hostile country, however, the Golan would be a strategic nightmare for Israel. The Golan Heights rise from 400 to 1700 feet overlooking the Hula Valley, Israel's richest agricultural area, only about 60 unobstructed miles from Haifa and Acre, Israel's industrial heartland. The Golan falls within the Biblical boundaries of the Land of Israel (biblical Bashan), and was always part of the Jewish homeland. The uprising against the Roman Empire featured the battle of Gamla on the Golan Heights in 67 CE, three years before the fall of Jerusalem (70 CE). Over 9000 Jewish citizens were killed in a Madada-like encounter.

    Syria's Role In Lebanon
Damascus has a long and bloody history of intervention in Lebanon , and has made no secret of its hope to make its weaker neighbor part of Syria . Since the creation of contemporary Lebanon in 1920, most Syrians have never accepted modern Lebanon as a sovereign and independent state. The outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War in 1975 gave Damascus the opportunity to act on its belief that Lebanon and Syria are one. Syria moved troops into Lebanon before receiving the Arab League's approval. Damascus intervened in April 1976 after Lebanese Druze warlord Kemal Jumblatt refused Syrian President Hafez Assad's demand for a cease-fire in the war. Jumblatt's refusal to stop his forces' attacks upon Lebanese Christians gave Assad the pretext he needed to intervene. In June 1976, the Arab League Secretariat convened a meeting at which Syria, Libya Saudi Arabia and the Sudan agreed to send troops to "enforce peace." Assad sent more Syrian troops into the country, while the others sent only token forces. The Arab League's "endorsement," in short, constituted nothing more than the recognition of a fait accompli. By 1978, Damascus had switched sides, and was supporting a leftist coalition of Palestinians, Druze and Muslims against the Christians. Eventually, Syrian troops occupied two-thirds of Lebanon. Syria's deployment of surface-to-air missile batteries in Lebanon, and its policy of allowing the PLO and other terrorist groups to attack Israel from there, helped trigger the 1982 Lebanon War.

    The 1948 War
    by Mitchell Bard
Violence in the Holy Land broke out almost immediately after the UN announced partition on November 29, 1947. Jamal Husseini, the Arab Higher Committee's spokesman, had told the UN prior to the partition vote the Arabs would drench "the soil of our beloved country with the last drop of our blood . . . ." Husseini's prediction began to come true after the UN announcement. The Arabs declared a protest strike and instigated riots that claimed the lives of 62 Jews and 32 Arabs. By the end of the second week, 93 Arabs, 84 Jews and 7 Englishmen had been killed and scores injured. From November 30February 1, 427 Arabs, 381 Jews and 46 British were killed and 1,035 Arabs, 725 Jews and 135 British were wounded. In March alone, 271 Jews and 257 Arabs died in Arab attacks and Jewish counterattacks. The chairman of the Arab Higher Committee said the Arabs would "fight for every inch of their country."
