Learning the Geography of Syria, USA Style

November 8, 2003
A recent dateline on the front page of the New York Times: Aleppo. How many Americans know where Aleppo is? Is this the beginning of the countdown to Bush's bloody way of teaching geography? We've been through this before. Before Gulf War II who knew the names of any cities or towns in Iraq besides Baghdad? Americans now know Falluja. Here, on November 2nd, 16 GI's died as guerillas shot down a US helicopter. It's also where, in April, US troops fired on Sunni protestors killing at least 14. We know Mosul; that's where Saddam's sons were blasted to smithereens. We now know Basra, Tikrit and Najaf. We learn geography through fire and explosions. We learn through severed heads, crushed bellies and amputated limbs. We learned Kandahar, Mazar-e-Sharif and Herat in Afghanistan as US bombers turned ancient cities into rubble. Is Syria next?

Geography: The Syrian Arab Republic is located in the Middle East at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea.
It is bordered by Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east and south-east, Jordan to the south, and Lebanon to the south-east. The capital of Syria is Damascus; other large cities are Aleppo, Lattakia, Homs, and Deir Ez-Zor.
Syria covers an area more than 185,000 square kilometers; its terrain, climate and vegetation are diverse. Mountains dominate the western and south-western regions and separate the narrow coastal plain form the interior. The highest mountain range straddles the boundary with Lebanon and is high enough to get heavy snow in winter; most of the remainder of Syria to the east of these mountains is a plateau. The coastal plain has warm, humid summers and mild, wet winters and gets enough rain for crops to be grown without irrigation. The interior, by contrast, has cold winters, especially in the north, and extremely hot summers, particularly in the east. Much of the interior is desert, or semi-desert. The two major rivers, the Euphrates and Orients, originate in Turkey and Lebanon.

Since 1958 it has been controlled by the military, the latest being Saddam Hussein. By the 2nd millennium BC the Phoenicians had already extended their influence along the coast of the Levant by a series of settlements, some well known, some virtually nothing but names. Well known throughout history are Joppa (Tel Aviv-Yafo) and Dor (later Tantura, modern Nasholim) in the south. The geographic boundaries of the territory were Phoenicians lived are vague, and the name Phoenicia may be applied to all those places on the shores of the eastern Mediterranean where the Phoenicians established colonies in Cyprus, North Africa, Sicily, Sardinia, and Iberia. More often it refers to the heart of the territory where the great Phoenician cities, notably Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos stood ( corresponding roughly to the coast of present-day Lebanon with adjoining parts of modern Syria, Turkey and Israel probably somewhere around the lower right edge of Turkey on the Mediterranean in the North and the upper cost of Sinia in the South through

Many of these routes have been documented from as early as 5,000 years ago, and the presence of so many different people and products over the years has had a profound effect on the region's culture, politics, and economy.
More than deserts and camels The landscape of the Middle East is more diverse than the deserts that dominate movie screens and novels would suggest. Rivers allowing for productive agriculture were the key factor in the settling of cities. Mountain ranges kept cultures in separate areas, providing natural barriers to imperialist agendas. A fertile bank of the Nile River in Egypt [ enlarge The rich, fertile soil of the Middle East led early civilizations to settle, domesticate plants and animals, and thrive. The Fertile Crescent between the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers known as Mesopotamia (now modern Iraq, and extending north into Syria and Turkey) was the home of the world's first urban culture, the Sumerians, 6,000 years ago. The Sumerians' Egyptian rivals took advantage of the annual flooding of the Nile for their regular harvest, later exporting a large portion of their produce to the Roman Empire. Some time later, the Hittites settled in the golden, rolling hills of

geography of The Jordan River Valley stretches from Mount Hermon in the north to the Dead Sea in the south and includes Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and syria.
    http://www.wws.princeton.edu/~wws401c/geography.html
Geography of Water Resources The Jordan River Valley stretches from Mount Hermon in the north to the Dead Sea in the south and includes Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Eighty percent of the basin, however, is in Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank, which do not have other significant surface water sources, and have only limited groundwater sources. Jordan relies on the surface waters of the basin for 75% of its water needs, while Israel relies on the surface waters for only 30% of its water consumption because it has larger aquifers from which to draw water. Syria relies on the basin minimally, for the Euphrates River and other smaller basins fall within its borders. Israel and Palestine have an combined 1.4 BCM/yr of renewable water resources, with an additional 450 MCM/yr captured by Israeli water reuse and rainwater collection for a total of about 2 BCM/yr. Already a deficit of water exists between what is used and what is available in the environment. In 1994, Israel and the Palestinian territories used approximately 2.1 BCM of water. Map of the Regional Drainage Basins The Sea of Galilee is the principal aboveground storage reservoir in the basin with a surface area of 170 square kilometers and a volume of approximately 4000 MCM. Its water derives from three sources: the Hasbani, Dan and Banias River, which merge at a point six kilometers within Israel’s northern border. At present, the water level in the Sea of Galilee has fallen more than 213 meters below sea level and is now no more than 4 to 6 meters deep at any point. This low quantity of water threatens water quality, including the toxic algae and lowers the water pressure that keeps out the salt water springs flowing into the bottom of the lake.

    The Golan Law

The area in the north which came under Israeli control as a result of the 1967 Six-Day War and is popularly referred to as the "Golan Heights," is actually composed of two geologically distinct areas (divided by Nahal Sa'ar): the Golan Heights proper (approx. 1.070 sq. km.) and the slopes of the Mt. Hermon range (approx. 100 sq. km.).
    GEOLOGY, GEOGRAPHY AND NATURAL HISTORY
While the Mt. Hermon range is mostly limestone, the Golan Heights proper is mostly basalt and other types of volcanic rock, forming a plateau that drops off to the west, to the Jordan River and Lake Kinneret (in the Syrian-African Rift Valley), and to the south, to the Yarmouk River. The plateau is crossed by a number of seasonal streams which run through valleys, sometimes very deep, and flow west into the Jordan or the Lake. The Golan proper may be divided into three regions: northern (between Nahals Sa'ar and Gilabon), central (between Nahals Gilabon and Dilayot), and southern (between Nahal Dilayot and the Yarmouk Valley). The northern Golan has double the average rainfall of the southern Golan, and often receives snow in the winter, as does the Mt. Hermon area.
