Donalda Smith — Synchronized Swimming Donalda Smith’s name has become synonymous with the sport of synchronized swimming, not only within Canada but internationally. Her efforts and dedication spanned five decades and helped create a Canadian system that has produced gold medals for our country at world championships and Olympic Games. A judge and official for more than 33 years, Smith helped synchronized swimming evolve into the sport it is today. She was one of the driving forces behind developing the first synchro manuals in Canada, publications that helped to set the standard for the sport internationally. Donalda Smith was a teacher when she moved to Vancouver from the prairies in 1934, She was also a swim and life-saving instructor. But Donalda didn’t get involved in a sport she at first knew only as "fancy swimming" until 1953 when her daughter, Margaret MacLennan, decided to try synchro and convinced her mother to coach herself and a friend. Smith, who died in November of 1998, went on to make valuable contributions to the sport in many areas including as a coach, judge and official. From 1972 to 1980, she served on the technical committee of FINA, the sport’s international governing body.

Too often issues of sexism against men get ignored in American popular culture, especially in American sports culture. The issue of men's participation in synchronized swimming is a good example of the struggles that men are currently going through in order to ensure that gender equality in the sports world applies to everyone.

FOR THE RECORD: Promoter of Synchronized Swimming for World Competition; Water Ballet Teacher, Coach: National Champion Athens (CA) Team (1952-1960); Conducted International Water Show and Water Ballet Tours (1949-1961); FINA's First Synchronized Swimming Secretary (1954); U.S. National Synchronized Swimming Chairman (1953-1957); Promoter of Synchronized Swimming for Television and Print Media.
No moss grew under the feet of this young woman. From her early interest in synchronized swimming at the age of 17 until her death at age 89, Norma Olsen was synchro's international ambassador. Norma first worked water ballet routines into her Red Cross Learn to Swim classes in the late 20's in rural South Dakota. Marrying and moving to Cedar Falls, Iowa, she became the state's first synchronized swimming chairman. When daughter Zoe Ann needed more advanced coaching for her diving, the family moved again, this time to Oakland, California. The move proved successful for Zoe Ann. She became Olympic springboard silver medalist in 1948 and bronze medalist in 1962, and preceded her mother into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an honoree. Norma put her energies into the water extravaganzas and arranged water shows throughout California, the finest since Billy Rose's Aquacades of the late 30's and early 40's. The shows were so popular that by 1949, Norma traveled with her teams to Hong Kong and the Philippines, promoting water shows and synchronized swimming. By 1951, she and Mrs. Richard Pawson entered the Pacific Coast's first team into the National Championships. Norma's Athens Synchronized Swimming Team reigned as national champions from 1952 to 1960. Norma, with Ross and Dawn Bean became coaching and promoting legends at the Athens Club.

About U.S. Synchronized Swimming Since synchronized swimming began in the early 1900s, spectators have been awed by the grace and power of this exciting sport which requires a unique combination of overall body strength and agility, grace and beauty, split-second timing, musical interpretation and dramatic flair. The inaugural synchronized swimming U.S. National Championships were held in 1946, just one year after the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) first recognized the sport. A few years later, the 1955 Pan American Games included synchronized swimming events, and the World Aquatic Championships soon followed. After almost 40 years of concerted effort, synchronized swimming was at last included in the Olympic Games in 1984, with the United States winning the first solo and duet Olympic gold medals. Three events are currently recognized internationally in synchronized swimming: solo, duet and team (eight swimmers). The competitive rules and manner of judging are similar to such sports as figure skating and gymnastics. In the 1996 Olympics, the team event replaced solo and duet competition, which had been a part of the Olympic program since 1984. However, duets will be re-introduced for the 2000 Olympic Games. Synchronized swimming has captured the attention of sports spectators worldwide, and today it ranks among the most popular of amateur sporting events. In the last 10 years, the sport has experienced unparalleled growth to include more than 5,000 athletes, coaches and officials, participating in more than 200 clubs across the country. More than 50 nations compete in synchro on six continents.

The sport of synchronized swimming has come a long way since its early beginnings as "water ballet" in Esther Williams’ movies. Today’s synchronized swimmer must have the grace of a ballerina, the strength and flexibility of a gymnast, the skills of a speed swimmer and water polo player, the lungs of a pearl diver, and the endurance and stamina of a long distance runner. Add to that the requirement for split-second timing and a dramatic flair for musical interpretation and choreography. "But it looks so easy", many people say. Making a routine look easy is an important part of the sport and is just one of the things that the judges look for in competition. To get a better appreciation for the demands of this sport–imagine a gymnast performing on the balance beam while holding her breath for up to half of her routine. Now throw in additional gymnasts performing the same routine concurrently and in complete synchronization. The training regimen of a synchronized swimmer is more demanding than many sports. Top level synchronized swimmers may train for up to 8 hours per day. Weight training, flexibility exercises, not to mention many hours spent in the pool are all part of a synchronized swimmer's workout.

China aim to make top four in the synchronized swimming competitions at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and bid for podium places in the 2008 Games in Beijing , a Chinese sports official Thursday.
"These are the latest targets we've set," said Yu Li, an official with China Swimming Administrative Center. She was in the city to supervise the national youth championship.
"We even eye the gold medal in the 2008 Games," she said.
Since Beijing was awarded last year the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games , Chinese sports associations have gradually adjustedtheir targets for the next two Olympic Games.
China is currently second to Japan in Asia in the sport and ranks among the world's top eight.
"Although the sport does not have a long history in China, we'dmade amazing progress," Yu said.

Some sports have to go, don't they?
BY TIM SULLIVAN
The Cincinnati Enquirer
ATLANTA - The place was packed. The scores were spectacular. The American gold medalists cried for the cameras, and their industrial strength makeup didn't smear so much as a smidgen. The evidence is in and the verdict appears inescapable: It looks as if we're stuck with synchronized swimming. The Olympic Games go on and on and on, growing like a weed, expanding like an amoeba. More than 10,000 athletes are competing in Atlanta, and Sydney organizers say they are prepared for as many as 15,000 competitors four years hence. The Australians are adding tae kwon do and triathlon to the program for the 2000 Games, and the International Olympic Committee has yet to announce any subtractions. Something has to give eventually, but many of the more obscure Olympic sports survive because they are deeply entrenched and politically adroit. The silly newer ones simply refuse to die.

(CBS) Kadeeja Zunatto is practicing hard four days a week because she's a girl with a dream.
"To be in the Olympics, winning the gold in solo, duet and team," says Zunatto.
That's the 2016 Olympics, or if she's really lucky, 2012.
At the age of 10, Zunatto has been a synchronized swimmer for three years.
She is a member of the beginners Aquamaids team in Santa Clara, Calif. Like others her age, she has the time to train and nurture her Olympics ambitions. After 20,000 hours of practice, she might earn a membership on the Santa Clara Aquamaid National Team. And from that group, the United States Olympic team will pick contestants to represent the nation. "Synchronized swimming is demanding because it's a long-term proposition," says Chris Carver, the coach of the last two U.S. Olympic team. "It really takes at least 10 years to become a world-class athlete. An Olympic training squad practices about eight to 10 hours a day, six days a week.
