EXCUSE ME?!?!?!?!
Synchronized swimming is one of the hardest soprts you will ever find! It is a sport of dedication (I train 3-5 hours a day, 6 days a week, plus at leat 4 hours a week of land training, and 1 hour a week of dance). I give up a lot of a social life to do this, and I also have to miss school for competitions. It's not all costumes, make up, fancy, prissy Hollywood stuff. It can be quite unattractive, actually. Getting up at 4:30 A.M. on Saturday morning, while everyone else is sleeping...going to school tired and smelling like a swimming pool becasue of early practice...but nothing is mre rewarding than standing on the medal podium at Nationals, in front of thousands of people, that's when the work pays off.
I have been doing synchro since I was 9 years old (I'm 15 now), and with each year, I become more and more dedicated, and love the sport more and more.

ABOUT SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING
HISTORY
It started as a male sport, with the earliest recorded competition in 1890 in Berlin. It has persevered under a myriad of names, including artistic, ornamental, scientific, figure or pattern swimming, as well as water ballet. By the turn of the century, though, women had come to the fore of synchronized swimming. A champion Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman delighted audiences with dances performed in a glass tank of water in New York in 1907. Interest began to build. In 1924 in Montreal, the world's first provincial championship was held. The first champion, Peg Seller, became an important pioneer for the fledgling sport, and from there it spread to the US, where it soon flourished in amateur swimming clubs nationwide. Chicago later emerged as the hub of the sport's development, beginning with a stunning display at the 1934 World's Fair. Diver and former gymnast Katherine Curtis trained 60 swimmers, known as The Modern Mermaids, in a series of moves that gave birth to the term "synchronized swimming." It's international popularity soared further when swimmer Esther Williams performed in a string of MGM "aqua musicals" in the 1940s and '50s. By then a contracted star at MGM, she starred in several films, known as "aqua musicals," centered around synchronized swimming. One of the biggest, Million Dollar Mermaid, was an affectionate portrait of Annette Kellerman.

How Did Synchronized Swimming Become an Olympic Sport?
Emily Yoffe
Posted Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at 3:25 PM PT
Or for that matter this year's addition to the Olympic canon, its cousin, synchronized diving? There are three ways an activity can come into the Olympics: as a completely new sport; as a discipline, a branch of an existing sport; or as an event, a competition within a discipline. Triathlon is making its Olympic debut as a sport in Sydney; trampoline, which is part of gymnastics, is a new discipline; and women's pole vaulting the latest track and field event. Continue Article The first step to becoming a recognized sport of the Summer Games requires being organized into an international federation and having male participants in at least 75 countries on four continents and female participants in at least 40 countries on three continents. Once the International Olympic Committee votes to recognize a federation, the next step becomes a matter of lobbying. This is supposed to be done without the help of that now-banned Olympic activity, bribery. The IOC now recognizes 31 federations in everything from bridge to korfball (it is beyond Explainer's capacity to explain korfball Since the IOC wants to keep the number of athletes to the current 10,000 (!), it also helps if a sport has telegenic participants, which may be why triathlon made it from recognized international federation to medal sport in a swift 11 years, and bowling, recognized since 1979, languishes. (Their new Olympic marketing campaign slogan: "Strike Gold.")

Synchronized Swimming First Olympic Appearance: 1984 by John Gettings Popularized in Canada during the 1920s, this combination of ballet and gymnastics in water first caught America's attention at an exhibition at the 1934 World's Fair in Chicago. Steadily gaining popularity throughout the 1940s and 50s, it was a made a demonstration sport in 1948 and kept that status through five straight Olympic games.
      Did You Know?
There are stereo speakers in the walls of the pool where the synchronized swimming event will be held so the competitors can hear the music while below the water's surface.
In both the duet and team competitions, swimmers will perform routines that consist of boosts, twirls, kicks and spins which mirror the actions of their teammates above and below the water surface. During a technical routine swimmers may choose their own musical accompaniment but must perform specific moves in a set order. Technical routines must be completed in less than three minutes.

    Special to ESPN.com
Jacques Rogge, the King of the Olympics, has been trying to make the Games more manageable, and with that in mind, the folks who run international baseball and softball are on their knees begging for mercy. Meanwhile, we still have rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming, trampoline and several other rampant idiocies safe for Olympics to come. How does figure skating rate as an Olympic sport when there are flowers and kissing involved? So, while the meetings are continuing to see whether the softball and baseball lobbies have any heat with the International Olympic Committee, let's take a moment. No, really. Jacques, babe. Come sit. Let's chat. You want the Olympics smaller? Fine. We're down with that. But with so much fat on the bone, what's a ball game more or less? Hell, start with the parade. I mean, watching Bob Costas struggle through his index cards for something piquant to say about Uzbekistan is sufficiently painful that hurrying the athletes along is a grand start right there.

Synchronised Swimming Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports Synchronised swimming is one of only three Olympic disciplines in which only women are allowed to compete (the other two being rhythmic gymnastics and Softball). The pool where synchronised swimming takes place must be at least 3 m deep over a 12 x 12 m area in the centre of the pool. In Olympic Synchronised swimming any country can enter in the duet and the team event. There are two sets of marks, one for technical merit and one for artistic presentation. Swimmers perform their routines in the water and are marked for both their technical merit and artistic presentation. Synchronised swimming is often described as 'water ballet', because of the dance-like movements swimmers make to music, and its theatrical character. Even though it looks like one of the easier Olympic disciplines, Synchronised swimming actually calls for strength, endurance, flexibility, grace, artistry, and special endurance breathing techniques. Synchronized swimming became an exhibition sport at five Olympic Games from 1948 to 1968, and then debuted as a full medal sport in Los Angeles in 1984. It is open only to women, with medals offered in two events in the Sydney 2000 Games - duet and team.
