Its critics cannot understand how it qualifies for a place at the highest alter in sport, when it appears to be little more than a group of women smiling a lot, duck diving and wiggling their legs in the air. But this interpretation misses the athleticism, artistry and strength required to compete in synchronized swimming at the highest level. The sport requires grace, agility, flexibility, near-perfect timing, musical interpretation and a sense of the dramatic.

Synchronized Swimming Synchronized swimming is a sport requiring power, strength, and technical skill. These artistically choreographed routines display overall body strength and agility, grace and beauty, split-second timing, musical interpretation, and a flair for the dramatic. Maintaining an effortless appearance while performing a strenuous routine is very difficult, yet this is an important quality expected by the judges. The physical demands and endurance needed to perform the approximately four-minute routine are not much different from running for that same length of time. They also spend hours every day practicing ballet and various forms of dance to develop the artistic expression and fluid, graceful movements that are essential to synchronized swimming.

Origins

While there is evidence of swimmers performing ballet-like manoeuvres in the water in ancient times, the origin of synchronized swimming as an organized, competitive sport dates to earlier this century. In the 1920s, a group of Canadian women, led by national calibre water polo player and diver Margaret Sellers, developed what they called "ornamental swimming" from life saving and swimming techniques. Over the next 20 years the sport grew, music was added to the routines and the name changed to "synchronized swimming". Canadians have continued to be leaders in developing the sport. Since 1973, when the first world championships were held, Canadian swimmers have won medals at every major international competition.
The Sport
Synchronized swimmers perform a series of rhythmic interpretations of specific movements on or under the water, marked by a panel of judges. Each team of eight swimmers performs a technical routine between 2:50 and 3:00 long, and a free routine between 4:45 and 5:15 long. The technical routine must include seven prescribed elements. Free routines are choreographed and swimmers' movements are expected to be synchronized with the music and with other swimmers.
Technical merit and artistic impression marks are given for each routine. The highest and lowest marks are discarded, and the remaining marks are averaged. The technical merit mark is then multiplied by six and the artistic impression mark multiplied by four to arrive at a total mark for that routine. The mark for the technical routine counts for 35% of the final score and the free routine counts for 65%.

They called their invention "ornamental and scientific swimming;" we know it as synchronized swimming. It was a Canadian idea, developed by three Montreal women who recognized that not everyone interested in competitive aquatics cared for speed swimming. It is also one of the few sports developed by women, for women. Peg Seller Herstory 1977) was instrumental in encouraging the development of synchronized swimming, writing the rules for international competition and lobbying to have it recognized as an Olympic event. http://www.teenink.com/Past/9900/November/Sports/Synchronized.html
S ynchronized swimming has been virtually unknown for many years, though you've probably seen it mocked on "Saturday Night Live" and in commercials. But the question is, do you really know what synchronized swimming is, and that it's a difficult and demanding sport?
Our routines are judged and scored by a panel of experts. The scoring is very similar to figure-skating events. One one-hundredth of a point can mean the difference between a first and second-place medal.
In this sport there are many rules to follow or risk a penalty. You are not allowed to walk, stand or push off the bottom of the pool or you receive a 1-2 point penalty. You are supposed to keep your shoulders out of the water using your legs in a movement called the eggbeater.
The scull that we use to keep our legs out of the water and keep the water measure at our knees is called support hand sculling. It is hard to learn but once you master it, it helps with all of synchronized swimming.
Some might call synchronized swimming water gymnastics. I prefer it to actual gymnastics; if you fall, the water will catch you.
Our team routines usually consist of eight swimmers and last 4-5 minutes. Duets and trios are 3-4 minutes and solos last 2-3 minutes. All of these routines are judged according to the team's level of synchronized performance. They include: movement using the entire pool, creativity, athleticism and the interaction of the swimmers with the audience and judges.

MICHELLE CALKINS (CAN)
Honor Synchronized Swimmer FOR THE RECORD: 1973 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: silver (team); 1978 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: gold (duet); 1976 PAN AMERICAN GAMES: silver (team); 1976 PAN PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIPS: silver (team); 1977 PAN PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIPS: gold (duet); NATIONAL TEAM COACH AND OLYMPIC COACH: 1988 - present. Coach Debbie Muir of the Calgary Aquabelles had a knack for pairing the two most synchronized swimmers on her team when she paired Michelle Calkins with Helen Vanderberg to win the 1978 World Championships duet in Berlin, Germany. It marked the first time that Canadian synchronized swimmers had won a World Duet Championship, an important milestone in the evolution of synchronized swimming in Canada. In 1977, Michelle and her Hall of Fame partner Helen were named to the Elaine Tanner Award as Canada's best young female athletes of the year by Sports Federation of Canada. And all this before synchronized swimming became an Olympic sport! In 1969, Michelle won the '12 and under' Alberta Provincial Figures Trophy and was on her way to synchronized swimming stardom. By 1971, she was a member of The Aquabelles Junior National Team Champions and in 1973 a Canadian Junior National Solo Champion. From 1973 to 1978, she won seven Canadian Senior National Championships in duet, team and figures events. Her first international competition was winning the silver medal in the 1973 First World Championships team event in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. She won the silver in the Mexico City 1975 Pan American Games team event. The Pan Pacific Championships of 1976 and 1977 were the warm up to the gold medal performance of the 1978 World Championships. All this was before synchronized swimming was an Olympic event. Also during 1978, she performed in a demonstration of synchronized swimming at the Edmonton Commonwealth Games before synchronized swimming became an official Commonwealth Games event eight years later in 1986.
