American Team Captures Gold Again
The U.S. synchronized swimming team continues to rule the pool in the Olympic. The U.S. won the gold medal Friday with a near-flawless performance in the sport's first team competition at the games. Since synchronized swimming was added in 1984, American swimmers have picked up four golds and two silvers. The U.S. finished with a score of 99.720 points and received nine perfect 10s from the judges for their stirring five-minute routine. Canada took the silver with a score of 98.367 and Japan won the bronze with 97.753.

Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither
By Jonathon Kahn
Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 8:30 PM PT
The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Continue Article Equally ridiculous are the bogus events. Everyone's favorite is synchronized swimming, which

Rollerskating, ballroom dancing and water skiing could be events you see at future Olympic Games. You may also see tug-of-war, sumo wrestling and even chess. All of these are activities which the people who organize the Olympics consider to be "sports", and are thinking about adding to future Olympic competitions. Gimme a break. There are already enough lame sports at the Olympics. They don't need to add more sports; they need to get rid of some. Why do they even have fencing or shooting events? These are not sporting events, they are methods of murder. The same goes for synchronized swimming. If you have to put on make-up and get judged based on how much you smile - then it's not a sport (and it is possible to be bored to death by synchronized swimming!) What are they gonna add next? Modeling and hair styling ? I guess that way Anna Kournikova could finally say she's a winning athlete and not just some hot babe with a nice racket. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) did have enough brains to decide that bodybuilding is not a sport (it's actually defined as a circus act or a freak exhibit) - but the organization has given status to too many other activities that should really be classified as hobbies or "things I do when I'm really bored," (synchronized swimming not being one of them!)

Russia succeeds U.S. as sync swimming winners
Latest: Sunday October 08, 2000 05:47 PM Robyn Beck/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) - Russia captured the gold medal in the synchronized swimming team competition on Friday by scoring 99.146 out of a possible 100 points. Japan won the silver with 98.860, and Canada took bronze with 97.357. The United States, meanwhile, did not capture a medal for the first time since synchronized swimming became an Olympic sport in 1984. Using a witch-themed routine, the Russians earned two perfect 10s for technical marks and two 10s for artistic impression for a variety of pattern changes, lifts and throws. The team gold goes along with the duet gold Russia won three days earlier. "We wanted to make it very visual, including the swimsuits and hairstyles," said Maria Kisseleva, who, along with Olga Brusnikina, won the duet gold. "I believe it was a masterpiece. If it was not a masterpiece, we would not have won gold.

Russia takes duet synchronized swimming gold
Latest: Sunday October 08, 2000 05:49 PM Olga Brusnikina and Maria Kisseleva of Russia won the gold in the synchronized swimming duet. Greg Wood/ AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) Russia's Olga Brusnikina and Maria Kisseleva teamed to capture the gold medal in the synchronized swimming duet competition on Tuesday with a near-perfect routine. Brusnikina and Kisseleva used a karate routine performed to the beat of Japanese drums to defeat a team from Japan. The Russians picked up all 10s for artistic impression, while their technical marks were marred by a lone 9.9 from the Japanese judge. They totaled 99.580 points. Mya Tachibana and Miho Takedo took silver with 98.650, earning straight 9.9s from the judges. Virginie Dedieu and Myriam Lignot of France claimed bronze at 97.437. The fee program, performed in a half-filled Sydney International Aquatic Center, counted for 65 percent of the total mark. It was added to Sunday's technical results.

Katherine "Kay" Curtis didn't see the performance, but she may well have been inspired by newspaper accounts. As a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1915, Curtis began experimenting with underwater swimming stunts. The following year, she was instrumental in having synchronized swimming added to the school's physical education program for women. Curtis moved on to the University of Chicago, where she founded a water ballet club in 1923. Sixty of her swimmers, known as the "Modern Mermaids," performed at the 1934 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, attracting national and international publicity. The sport quickly became popular among young women in the Chicago area and Curtis developed rules for competition, based essentially on the scoring methods used in gymnastics, diving, and figure skating. The first recorded competition was held May 27, 1939, between Chicago Teacher's College, coached by Curtis, and Wright Junior College, also in Chicago.

    About U.S. Synchronized Swimming
Since synchronized swimming began in the early 1900s, spectators have been awed by the grace and power of this exciting sport, which requires a unique combination of overall body strength and agility, grace and beauty, split-second timing, musical interpretation, and dramatic flair. Officially first recognized by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) in 1945, the inaugural synchronized swimming U.S. National Championships were held in 1946. A few years later, the 1955 Pan American Games included synchronized swimming events, and the World Aquatic Championships soon followed. After almost 40 years of concerted effort, synchronized swimming was at last included in the Olympic Games in 1984, with the United States winning the first solo and duet Olympic gold medals. There are three events currently recognized internationally in synchronized swimming: solo, duet and team (eight swimmers). The competitive rules and manner of judging are similar to such sports as figure skating and gymnastics. Although in previous Olympics, the solo and duet events have been held, the team competition now replaces these events starting in 1996. Synchronized swimming has captured the attention of sports spectators worldwide, and today it ranks among the most popular of amateur sporting events, with sell-outs in all Olympic Games. The sport is widely practiced in over 50 countries with competitive programs on every continent. In the last ten years, the sport has experienced unparalleled growth to include more than 5,000 athletes, coaches and officials, participating in over 200 clubs across the country.
