8,465 athletes, 159 nations The 1988 Olympics were the first Games in 16 years not to witness a boycott. But there were several concerns brewing before the Games. North Korea was still at war with South Korea even though a truce had been reached 35 years ago. Click for Olympic posters North Korea unsuccessfully demanded that it co-host the Games with South Korea and two fatal bombings were linked to North Korean efforts to stop the Games. The Japanese Red Army, which has been responsible for terrorism, was also threatening to disrupt the Games and South Korean university students were rioting in the streets.

Olympic gold medalist Misty Hyman named as Stanford's top athlete
Swimmer earns Al Masters Award during annual awards luncheon The Stanford University Athletic Board honored 36 of the university's top student-athletes at its annual awards luncheon last week. The luncheon was highlighted by senior women's swimmer and 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Misty Hyman receiving the board's highest honor - The Al Masters Award for attaining the highest standards of athletic performance, leadership and academic achievement. Hyman pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the entire Sydney Olympics by winning the gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly. Collegiately, Hyman was a 12-time NCAA Champion, and became just the second swimmer in the history of the program to earn the maximum possible 28 All-American honors (Catherine Fox is the other). The International Relations major was also a 17-time Pac-10 Champion. The Donald Kennedy Award presented to the senior athlete(s) who best exhibits the combination of excellent academics, strong athletic ability and a commitment to community service was shared by Michelle Scott (Field Hockey) and Hilary Homeyer (Women's Golf). Scott, who was named the 2000 Nor-Pac Conference Player of the year, has been accepted to serve in the Peace Corps for the next two years in Africa. She has also volunteered with Kids For Cancer, Amnesty International, U.S. Veterans Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. She is a Human Biology major with a 3.59 grade point average. Homeyer is a four-time All-American and represented the United States at the 2000 World Amateur Championships. She was a District VIII Academic All-American this season, and is both an Economics and Psychology major with a 3.82 grade point average.

ASTHMA COMMON IN U.S. OLYMPIC ATHLETES
WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE 1996 OLYMPIC GAMES,
RESEARCHERS REPORT IOWA CITY, Iowa - At least one in six athletes representing the United States in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta had a history of asthma, according to a study published today in the November issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Researchers at the University of Iowa and the U.S. Olympic Committee sought to examine how many athletes in the 1996 Olympic Games had a history of asthma, had taken asthma medications or had symptoms that suggested asthma. Asthma is a lung disease characterized by tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, wheezing and cough. To examine the prevalence of asthma, John Weiler, M.D., University of Iowa professor of internal medicine, and his co-authors analyzed responses from an extensive, mandatory medical history questionnaire required of all U.S. Olympic athletes competing in the 1996 Olympic Games. The questionnaire was completed during team processing in Atlanta two weeks prior to participation in the Olympic Games and responses were reviewed with each athlete. The questionnaire, designed by the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Division with input from Weiler and his colleagues, included specific questions regarding allergic and respiratory disorders.

Fab Five could be just the ticket for a scruffy Olympics
Posted: Wednesday May 12, 2004 4:13PM; Updated: Wednesday May 12, 2004 4:14PM
The Olympics need to be spruced up. This year's Games start in three months, and so far all anyone can talk about is whether the stadium roof will be built in time or if athletes will feel secure enough to show up in Athens. The Games need a makeover, and fast. The Queer Eye for the Straight Guy crew needs to give Olympic performers a makeover. AP Fortunately, the Fab Five is on the job. Yes, the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy  quintet who made their bones by showing slovenly straight men the importance of "tszujing" and fine wine are being turned loose on the five-ring circus that is the Olympics. Actually, that plan hasn't been divulged publicly, but it should be if NBC follows Monday's announcement of its broadcasting schedule to its logical conclusion. The network will divide its approximately 7,200 hours of coverage between the stations it owns, including Bravo. That's the cable channel, of course, that seems to air solely Queer Eye for the Straight Guy West Wing repeats and that bearded, pompous guy from the

ANCIENT ORIGINS MEN WERE FIRST WITH NOSE CLIP AND SYNCHRONICITY
T he haunt of nose clips, glitter, hair gel, make-up, beaming smiles and legs worthy of the catwalk, synchronised swimming, for women only, has endured much taunting and teasing over the years. Yet the protagonists are capable of holding their breath while performing their sport for long periods of time and count themselves among those at the Games with the most efficient cardio-vascular systems. Now confined to the fairer sex, synchronised swimming began with men in the 19th century, when it was known by various names including water ballet, figure swimming and ornamental swimming. Male actors staged the first recorded synchronised swimming contest in Berlin in 1891. Anette Kellerman, an Australian swimmer, stole the men's thunder, however, when she performed in a glass tank in New York in 1907. Ever since, synchro has been synonymous with women.

Canoeing and Kayaking Canoes and kayaks bring to mind serene images of gliding down a calm river or across a cool lake. However, canoe and kayak contests can be fiercely competitive. Racers speed past the finish line only fractions of seconds apart. For both canoe and kayak contests, there are two types of competitions: "sprints" in (calm) flatwater and "slaloms" in (more turbulent) whitewater. There are more differences between the sports of canoeing and kayaking than one might imagine. Kayaks are closed, except for the small cockpit where the paddler sits. Flatwater canoes are open. In whitewater races, kayaks are equipped with water-tight sprayskirts. Kayakers use double-bladed paddles while canoeists use one with a single-blade, paddling alternately from side to side. Canoeists kneel as they paddle, while kayakers sit in their boats with their legs extended forward.
