ABOUT SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING
HISTORY
It started as a male sport, with the earliest recorded competition in 1890 in Berlin. It has persevered under a myriad of names, including artistic, ornamental, scientific, figure or pattern swimming, as well as water ballet. By the turn of the century, though, women had come to the fore of synchronized swimming. A champion Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman delighted audiences with dances performed in a glass tank of water in New York in 1907. Interest began to build. In 1924 in Montreal, the world's first provincial championship was held. The first champion, Peg Seller, became an important pioneer for the fledgling sport, and from there it spread to the US, where it soon flourished in amateur swimming clubs nationwide. Chicago later emerged as the hub of the sport's development, beginning with a stunning display at the 1934 World's Fair. Diver and former gymnast Katherine Curtis trained 60 swimmers, known as The Modern Mermaids, in a series of moves that gave birth to the term "synchronized swimming." It's international popularity soared further when swimmer Esther Williams performed in a string of MGM "aqua musicals" in the 1940s and '50s. By then a contracted star at MGM, she starred in several films, known as "aqua musicals," centered around synchronized swimming. One of the biggest, Million Dollar Mermaid, was an affectionate portrait of Annette Kellerman.

Synchronized Swimming First Olympic Appearance: 1984 by John Gettings Popularized in Canada during the 1920s, this combination of ballet and gymnastics in water first caught America's attention at an exhibition at the 1934 World's Fair in Chicago. Steadily gaining popularity throughout the 1940s and 50s, it was a made a demonstration sport in 1948 and kept that status through five straight Olympic games.
      Did You Know?
There are stereo speakers in the walls of the pool where the synchronized swimming event will be held so the competitors can hear the music while below the water's surface.
In both the duet and team competitions, swimmers will perform routines that consist of boosts, twirls, kicks and spins which mirror the actions of their teammates above and below the water surface. During a technical routine swimmers may choose their own musical accompaniment but must perform specific moves in a set order. Technical routines must be completed in less than three minutes.

The sport quickly became popular among young women in the Chicago area and Curtis developed rules for competition, based essentially on the scoring methods used in gymnastics, diving, and figure skating. The first recorded competition was held May 27, 1939, between Chicago Teacher's College, coached by Curtis, and Wright Junior College, also in Chicago.

Abstracts of Most Recent Issue of Journal of Olympic History Vol. 8, No. 2 From the Trenches to the Track, and Back (by Harry Gordon). pp. 7-10. Australian Olympic historian Harry Gordon discusses the many Olympic athletes who have fought for their nation during wartime. He begins with the story of Claude Smeal, an Australian soldier who ran the 1952 marathon. Further discussion centered on several British soldiers who honored themselves both on the battlefield and the Olympic arena. Gordon ends the article by discussing the relationship of Jesse Owens and Lutz Long, which began at the 1936 Olympics, and ended with the death of Long while fighting in North Africa during World War II. The Olympic Bribery Scandal (by Bill Mallon). pp. 11-27. This long article attempts to be the most complete, and accurate, summary of the events surrounding the Olympic Scandal of 1999. The article is based on primary documentary sources, including all the reports issued in 1999 that evaluated the status of the scandal. These included the Pound Report (IOC), the Mitchell Report (USOC), the Sheridan Report (Sydney), and the Salt Lake City Board of Ethics Report (Salt Lake City 2002). After discussion of the findings of the reports, the article focuses on the attempts at reform by the IOC, including the institution of the IOC 2000 Commission, the IOC Ethics Commission, and the numerous reforms enacted by the IOC at their 1999 Session held on 11-12 December in Lausanne.
