http://www.scout.ch/snch/en/
Welcome to ScoutNet Switzerland !
The association Scoutnet Switzerland has set itself the target of connecting together Scouts from Switzerland and across the world.
As our "tool" we make use of the Internet and the mailbox network ScoutNet based on Fido technology.
In co-operation with the Swiss Guide and Scout Movement (SGSM), we would like to enable Swiss Scouts to become active in the Internet by providing access to the ScoutNet network, so as to make contact with Scouts from other countries, find out about them and exchange experiences with them.
The SGSM looks after the federal Units and the Cantonal Associations with its Internet project. We at Scoutnet Switzerland look after the local districts, units, departments and others. You will find further information about us under about ScoutNet Switzerland

History of Geneva
This page of content is part of the files of this website. We preserve this content to provide information on historical basis. Therefore it is not updated. The first traces of human civilization in Geneva, discovered on the shores of Lake Léman, date from around 3000 BC. The hill of the Old City, however, was not inhabited until 1000 BC. Later, when Rome conquered Geneva, it was defended by a small Celtic tribe. In 58 BC, Julius Caesar drove off an attack by the Helvetii. At the height of the Roman Empire, around 400 AD, it became a bishopric. The region was settled in 443 by a Germanic tribe, the Burgundians, but they were defeated later by the Francs, who occupied it in 534. Geneva was incorporated into the Merovingian dynasty, then into the Carlovingian Empire. The latter's disintegration in the 11th century led to the rise of the Second Burgundian Kingdom, to which Geneva belonged. In 1032, the kingdom passed into the hands of the Germanic emperors so Geneva legally became subject to the Empire. In practice, though, from the 11th century to the Reformation, it was ruled by its bishops, who had become the de facto lords of the city. Geneva did not develop into an important centre until the end of the Middle Ages when its fairs, reaching their peak in the 15th century, first gave it an international reputation. Its independence, however, was threatened by Savoy, whose princes strove unsuccessfully from the 13th to the 17th century to force the town into submission. At its time of gravest danger, during the first third of the 16th century, the city' autonomy was saved by the intervention or the Swiss cantons of Fribourg and Bern. When the Reformation triumphed in 1535, the city became a republic. Calvin made Geneva his home the following year, and it was through his genius that the city earned the name "Protestant Rome". From 1550 onwards, persecuted Protestants, mainly French and Italians, streamed into Geneva in search of sanctuary. Under the guidance of Calvin and Théodore de Bèze, they gave their new home a greater religious and intellectual influence.

The German-speaking Region
The French-speaking Region
The second national language is spoken in the cantons of Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel and Vaud, as well as in parts of the cantons of Bern, Fribourg and Valais. The Romandie (as French-speaking Switzerland is called) also used to have its dialects, but the church and schools suppressed them in the rural districts. The French spoken in western Switzerland has some regional characteristics, but otherwise the Romands speak French as it is spoken in France. In fact, it is the Geneva reformer Jean Calvin who played a decisive role in shaping the cultural and linguistic identity of these cantons.
The Italian-speaking Region
Italian is spoken in the southern valleys up to the St.Gotthard, Lukmanier, San Bernardino, Maloja, and Bernina passes. This region comprises the whole of the canton of Ticino and the valleys of Misox/Calanca, Bergell/Bregaglia and Poschiavo in the canton of Graubuenden (Grisons). While the construction and development of international traffic routes (St.Gotthard Pass) and tourism from the north brought economic prosperity to what used to be the somewhat impoverished southern part of Switzerland, it also resulted in a threat to the region's cultural identity. The rich local dialects have remained intact, particularly in rural areas. Artists and writers tend to look toward nearby Milan, the cultural center of northern Italy. Of course, Italian is also spoken in other parts of Switzerland by a relatively large Italian population which migrated to Switzerland as guest workers especially in the '50s and '60s.

    Switzerland Bike Tour 2000
A Photo Journal from Bavaria to Italy
    August 9 to September 2, 2000
Welcome to the web site for our 25-day cycling tour in Europe. We flew from Cleveland, Ohio, and Madison, Wisconsin, to Munich, Germany, taking our bikes and panniers. Our bike trip was a 600-mile (930 kilometers) loop from Bavaria to Switzerland, south to the Italian border, and returning to Munich by way of Austria. The following photo journal displays some of the highlights of our self-designed tour.
Our group of five friends biked about 40 miles per day and stayed in quaint, small hotels and youth hostels like this nearly 500-year old chalet in Brugg, Switzerland.
