The Federal Charter was produced and sealed. This inaugural confederation grew through a long series of accessions to modern Switzerland. The Alliance was concluded by representatives from three areas: Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. It was set up as a league for defense purposes against any attacker. The death of Rudolf I of Habsburg on 15 July 1291 probably prompted the alliance. Before his death Habsburg attempted to reinforce rights over Schwyz and Unterwalden which meant a succession of military interventions.

Centuries of serfdom, feudalism, and imperial power-mongering have left their mark on the landscapes of Austria and Switzerland. Crumbling castles, elaborate palaces, and medieval inner cities will transport you back in time. In Austria, explore the ruins of , where Richard the Lionheart was held for ransom; hike up to Burg Hochosterwitz along spiraling outer fortifications; or shiver in the Hexenzimmer (Witches' Room) of Burg Kronegg in Riegersburg, built on a barren cliff of volcanic rock. If you're looking for something a little more ornate, the Benediktinerstift of Melk takes the prize for ecclesiastical Baroque splendor. Vienna and Salzburg hold the lion's share of Austria's palaces-among the most impressive are

In 58 B.C. the Helvetii who inhabited the country (see Helvetia ) were conquered by the Romans. Invaded (5th cent. A.D. ) by the Alemanni and by the Burgundii, the area passed to the Franks in the 6th cent. Divided (9th cent.) between Swabia and Transjurane Burgundy , it was united (1033) under the Holy Roman Empire. The expanding feudal houses, notably ZAhringen and Kyburg, were supplanted (13th cent.) by the houses of Hapsburg and of Savoy . Hapsburg encroachments on the privileges of the three mountainous localities of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden resulted in the conclusion (1291) of a defensive league among them. The legendary hero of this event is William Tell . The league triumphed at Morgarten (1315) and, joined by Lucerne, ZUrich, Zug, Glarus, and Bern, decisively defeated the Hapsburgs at

However, by gradually transforming the bishops into their tools, the dukes nearly succeeded in mastering the city by the beginning of the 16th cent. Incensed, the citizens allied themselves with two Swiss cantons : Fribourg and Bern : expelled the bishop (1533), and accepted (1535) the Reformation preached by Guillaume Farel. The arrival (1536) of John Calvin thrust upon Geneva a role of European importance as the focal point of the Reformation . With its population swelled by Protestant refugees, notably Huguenots , Geneva became a cosmopolitan intellectual center. During the 18th cent., when the stern theocracy of Calvin had mellowed into patrician rule, the city's intellectual life reached its zenith. Voltaire settled there; J. J. Rousseau, H. B. de Saussure, Jacques Necker, Albert Gallatin, and P. E. Dumont were among the famous sons of Geneva in the 18th cent.

    BOOGIE WOOGIE History
In the early decades of the past century, poor, southern, rural African-American laborers entertained themselves in rough shacks known as barrelhouses. Here, unschooled blues singers accompanied themselves on the piano. The music we now refer to as boogie woogie began to take shape when these musicians developed a faster, purely instrumental form of blues for dancing.
