History
The first inhabitants of the region were a Celtic tribe, the Helvetia. The Romans appeared on the scene in 107 BC by way of the St Bernard Pass, but owing to the difficulty of the terrain their conquest of the area was never decisive. They were gradually driven back by the Germanic Altemanni tribe which settled in the 5th century. The territory was united under the Holy Roman Empire in 1032 but central control was never very tight. That was all changed by the Germanic Habsburg family, which became the most powerful dynasty in Central Europe. Habsburg expansion was spearheaded by Rudolph I, who gradually brought the squabbling nobles to heel. Upon Rudolph's death in 1291, local leaders saw a chance to gain independence. Their pact of mutual assistance is seen as the origin of the Swiss Confederation, and their struggles against the Habsburgs is idealised in the familiar legend of William Tell. Encouraged by early successes, the Swiss gradually acquired a taste for territorial expansion themselves and gained independence from the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I in 1499. After a number of military victories, the Swiss finally over-reached themselves when they took on a combined force of French and Venetians in 1515. Realising they could no longer compete against larger powers with better equipment, they renounced expansionist policies and declared their neutrality. The Reformation in the 16th century caused upheaval throughout Europe. The Protestant teachings of Luther, Zwingli and Calvin spread quickly, although central Switzerland remained Catholic. While the rest of Europe was fighting it out in the Thirty Years' War, the Swiss closed ranks and kept out of trouble. At the end of the war in 1648 they were recognised in the Treaty of Westphalia as a neutral state. Nevertheless, the French Republic invaded Switzerland in 1798 and established the Helvetic Republic. The Swiss, however, did not take too kindly to such centralised control. Napoleon was finally sent packing following his defeat by the British and Prussians at Waterloo. The ensuing Congress of Vienna guaranteed Switzerland's independence and permanent neutrality in 1815.

Switzerland was one of the earliest democracies. It was formed in 1291 when three cantons - Schwyz, Uri and Unterwalden - joined together to protect their borders. Since then, the number of united cantons has risen to 26. Each retains broad, autonomous powers. The federal government is led by a seven-member council; the members rotate the presidency for one-year terms. Each of the 26 cantons also sends two representatives to serve in the capital city, Bern, on the Council of States. Switzerland History and Culture
History During the Germanic invasions that swept over the Western Roman Empire in the 4th century AD, the Burgundians and the Alamanni conquered Helvetia. The Protestant Reformation in Switzerland started in 1518, when a country pastor named Huldreich Zwingli began to denounce the sale of indulgences by the Roman Catholic Church. During the 1790s, the French Revolution spread to Switzerland; the French continually intervened in support of Swiss revolutionaries, a group that sought to promote political reforms and the establishment of a strong national government, and in 1798 the revolutionaries occupied all Swiss territory.

[Upload image] Originally inhabited by the Helvetians or Helvetic Celts the territory comprising modern Switzerland was conquered by Julius Caesar during the Gallic wars and made part of the Roman Empire. It remained a Roman province until the 4th century AD. Under Roman influence the population reached a high level of civilization and enjoyed a flourishing commerce. Important cities such as Geneva Basel and Zurich were linked by military roads that also served as trade arteries between Rome and the northern tribes. After the decline of the Roman Empire Switzerland was invaded by Germanic tribes from the north and west. Some tribes such as the Alemanni in central and northeastern Switzerland and the Burgundians who ruled western Switzerland settled there. In 800 the country became part of Charlemagne's empire. It later passed under the dominion of the German emperors in the form of small ecclesiastic and temporal holdings subject to imperial sovereignty. In 1291 representatives of the three forest cantons of Uri Schwyz and Unterwalden signed the Eternal Alliance. This united them in the struggle against "foreign" rule by the Hapsburgs who then held the German imperial throne. At the battle of Morganten in 1315 the Swiss defeated the Hapsburg army and secured quasi-independence within the German Empire as the Swiss Confederation.

According to many historians, the history of Switzerland began in on a meadow called Rütli with a contract, known as the Bundesbrief ("Letter of Alliance") between leaders of regions called Uri Schwyz and Unterwalden in what is now Central Switzerland. The Bundesbrief united them in the struggle against the Habsburgs who coveted the countries controlling the Gotthard pass. At the battles of Morgarten in and Sempach , the Swiss defeated the Habsburg army and secured independence from local princes as the Swiss Confederation . Within the next century, towns like Lucerne, Zug, Zurich and Berne joined the confederation, which was still a loose alliance of independent confederates (which even waged war among themselves at times) which belonged nominally to the medieval German empire. A victorious war against the rich prince Charles the Bold of Burgundy in the 15th century gave the Swiss confederates a reputation of strong warriors who also served as mercenaries, especially in the wars of renaissance Italy During the Reformation, the alliance almost broke, half of the cantons (mainly the cities) joining the Zurich reformation of
