Back to Programs for Adults Page Culture, History and the Arts: South and North This program is coordinated for Elderhostel by the Swiss Experiment We become immersed in Switzerland's rich cultural life in two very distinctive regions: the Italian south and the German north. From our base in Italian Switzerland, we learn about Swiss-Italian history and a cultural heritage that includes folk music and architectural treasures from medieval times to the 20th century. We then move to consider historical Swiss-German art and culture in the neighborhood of Switzerland's capital, with particular emphasis on the fine arts and traditions in the Interlaken region. Program dates : Please contact Elderhostel, Inc. for upcoming program dates. 16 Night Program Program Itinerary Night: 1
Site: OVERNIGHT , INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT
Nights: 2 - 6
Site: LOCARNO , SWITZERLAND

This idyllic town sits on the shores of Lake Maggiore, a Mediterranean climate in an alpine setting. In addition to Locarno's scenic beauty and reputation as a health resort, it is an active cultural center. Lecturers from the worlds of education, business, and journalism introduce the history of the Ticino, Swiss-Italian culture, and Ticinesi emigration to the U.S. We take field trips to Bellinzona, Ticino's capital; medieval castles; the splendid Verzasca Valley with its Ticenesi stone houses; and Ascona. A full-day field trip by boat takes us to Brissago Island and Botanical Gardens. We have excursions through Locarno, Lugano and Lake Lugano, and a full-day in Luino (Italy). Activities include concerts and dining at a local grotto (typical outdoor restaurant).

Zurich is home to more than 1300 restaurants) to more cultural pursuits including mustexperience it from the Lake of Zurich, the third largest in switzerland.
    http://www.eurotravelling.net/switzerland/zurich_culture.htm
ADVERTISING INFORMATION Zurich - Culture Zurich is often referred to as the "garden city on the lake". A stroll through the fascinating city will soon explain the reason for this. Yet Zurich is also the most important commercial and economic centre in Switzerland, the capital of high finance, one of the richest cantons in the country and home to the famous and very beautiful shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse.
Zurich is a bustling metropolis with many new buildings and modern architecture. At the same time however, it also resembles a maze with its narrow twisting lanes, characterising both sides of the city divided by the scenic River Limmat. Age-old landmarks and examples of unique design and artistic styles proliferate throughout the city, although the oldest and best preserved are most densely distributed in Neumarkt. The famous Grossmunster with its two tall towers is the most dominant. Adjacent you will find the late 15th century Wasserkiche and the Rathaus, a graceful town hall built in the renaissance style.
In order to really familiarise oneself with Zurich, the visitor must experience it from the Lake of Zurich, the third largest in Switzerland. One of the many boat rides by day or night will make you appreciate its size. The perspective of the city and its romantic surrounds from this vantage point is quite unique and not to be missed.

    http://www.eurotravelling.net/switzerland/lucerne_culture.htm
ADVERTISING INFORMATION Lucerne - Culture Without doubt one of the prettiest towns in Switzerland, Lucerne lies in the heart of the country on the northern end of the famous lake of Lucerne, the Vierwaldstätter See. Dotted throughout with many Renaissance and Baroque fountains, colourful paintings on the gables and commanded by the exquisite wooden bridge, the Kapellbrücke and Wasserturm, the 13th century octagonal water tower, Lucerne's character is pure charm.
Spectacular views and sights abound from almost every vantage point in and around Lucerne. The heritage of this historic locale and of Switzerland itself is palpable in every landmark. The Old Town Hall - Altes Rathaus - is a fine example of a Renaissance building whilst the Meseggmauer, City Wall, built between 1350 and 1405 stands proud above the city. A stroll along the quay takes the visitor past the modern health resort and onto the largest and most important Transport Museum in Europe and the only Planetarium in Switzerland.
The famous Lion Monument - Löwendenkmal and the Glacier Garden, a geological phenomenon left over from the Ice Age make for remarkable viewing as do the Pilatus, Dietschiberg or Gütsch mountains peaks surrounding the city. A short drive from town takes visitors to some of the most breathtaking landscapes on earth. A paddle steamer ride around the Viewaldstätter Lake takes in the majesty and scenery of this beautiful area. A short drive will take you to the nearby winter resorts and many more lakes, This is the alpine range in central Switzerland where you will find glaciers, lush forests, verdant valleys and so much more.
