Volleyball
If you've ever played volleyball, you've experienced the excitement of one of the most popular games in America. Now, imagine yourself on the receiving end of a powerful spike by one of the top players in the world! This sport, one of the fastest team sports in the Olympic games, was invented in 1885 by William G. Morgan. What was the game originally called? When and where was the first game played? What games were combined to create the sport? These questions can be answered by visiting the History of Volleyball page: http://www.volleyball.org/history.html Two kinds of volleyball are played at the Olympics, Indoor Volleyball, and Beach Volleyball (a new sport at this year's Games.) Indoor Volleyball will be played from July 20 to August 4 at the University of Georgia and the Omni Colliseum, while Beach Volleyball will be played from July 23 to July 28 at the Atlanta Beach. Swimming
Swimming is one of Australia’s most popular sports, enjoyed by people of all ages. Living in a country surrounded by more than 35,000 kilometres of coastline, Australians are encouraged to learn to swim as early as in their first year. While initially the aim of swimming programs is teaching water safety and buoyancy, later programs focus on stroke development and technique. For many Australians swimming is a major form of fun and recreation. In the summer Australians and tourists flock to the many thousands of beaches along the country’s coast to enjoy the waves of the ocean. Others swim in backyard or public pools, or in lakes and dams in inland and rural areas. Before 1902 it was illegal to swim in the surf in daylight hours , a law based on morality rather than safety with men and women allowed to ‘bathe’ separately in the early morning or late evening. In 1902 this law was openly defied by a male swimmer who entered the water at

The Legend Takes One Last Splash
At the end of the last lap of Janet Evans' career, she ducked under the buoys and floated over to embrace the cocky teen who backed up a boast to take her place. In that poignant moment in the pool, America's greatest and most beloved woman swimmer let go of any lingering animosity she harbored toward fellow American Brooke Bennett, 15. She also let go of a lifetime's work and symbolically passed the torch to Bennett, the new 800-meter freestyle gold medalist.

    - Lane 9 News - USOC and NCAA to Address Olympic Sports Decline at US Colleges May 12, 2004 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., May 11. AFTER years of ignoring the problem, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) have finally decided to address the precipitous decline in Olympic sports, particularly Olympic sports, at the collegiate level. Today the two organizations announced the formation of the Joint NCAA/USOC Task Force to review the issue.
According to a press release issued today, the joint venture "seeks to explore ways to positively effect change by offering recommendations and solutions to curb the Olympic sports sponsorship regression."
The Olympic sports have also been impacted by the "arms race" in coaches' salaries on luxury seating in the sports of football and men's basketball. The press release went on to state: "In recent years, the elimination of sports programs by NCAA member institutions has disproportionately affected Olympic sports, prompting serious challenges for some National Governing Bodies dependent upon collegiate programs as a key source for future and current Olympic-caliber athletes. In addition, the sports decline has resulted in lost participation opportunities for NCAA student-athletes. Informal discussions on the future problems facing both organizations led to the creation of the task force, which is scheduled to operate for 18 months."
