by Chris Hudson Although 1,225 "athletes" competed in the second Olympics of the modern era in 1900 in Paris, historians concede that it was a poorly organized and monumental failure in most respects. It was here, however, that croquet, a sport "with hardly any pretensions to athleticism" according to the official report, was introduced to the Olympics. The Parisian croquet players forestalled competition from overseas by spreading the croquet over many weeks; there was only one paying spectator - an English gentleman. Organized croquet and the Olympic Games have both matured immeasurably in the last 100 years, but croquet - at last on the brink of becoming a truly worldwide sport - will be nowhere in evidence in Sydney at the quadrennial games in 2000. Chris Hudson, Secretary-general of the World Croquet Federation, researched the history of croquet's inauspicious Olympic debut for the WCF Newsletter WORLD CROQUET, from which is adapted the following article.

Greetings and Happy post-Olympic Games!
This has been a fun and exciting month, mainly due to the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City! Many of us here at the BASOC offices were fortunate enough to attend part of the Games. From pre-Opening Ceremonies to post-Closing Ceremonies, representatives from BASOC and it’s Board of Directors joined the festivities in Utah. The Olympic Games went smoothly and Salt Lake City did an incredible and amazing job during the two weeks. Kudos to them the Salt Lake City Organizing Committee. Special congratulations to Brandi Chastain, Captain of the San Jose CyberRays and two-time Olympian, for her commitment to being a great role model for girls and young women and a community leader. Brandi will receive the Juliette Gordon Low Award, presented by the Girls Scout of Santa Clara County (the highest award given by the council to a leader in the community) on March 20, 2002. Congratulations, Brandi! Best Regards

He provides training programs for most levels of fitness and experience. If you want to run, or continue running without injury, take the time to read this book. The first section of the book, "Starting," provides a brief history of running, then moves into five stages of running development (Beginner, Jogger, Competitor, Athlete, Runner). The second section, "Training," considers the physiology of running, planning a training program (including "running slow in order to run fast"), and keeping a log. This section concludes with an discussion about the need for rest and training programs. The third section, "Racing," talks about how to run faster, how to adjust your pace on the race day, how to handle different lengths of races (these include specific training programs), and how to prepare for a marathon. A final chapter considers issues for the advanced competititve runner.

Jones, Greene give U.S. golden 100-meter duo
Posted: Friday September 22, 2000 12:00 AM Marion Jones reacts after winning the 100 in a time of 10.75. Jeff Haynes/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) - Americans Marion Jones and Maurice Greene won their respective 100 meter races Saturday. Jones, who as a youngster wrote on a bedroom blackboard "I want to be an Olympic champion," got her wish on a chilly, wind-swept Saturday by winning the women's 100-meter final in 10.75 seconds. Her winning margin of .37 seconds over Ekaterini Thanou of Greece was the second biggest in Olympic 100-meter history. "It's been my dream for 19 years, and finally it's here," said a sobbing Jones, who hopes to win five gold medals in Sydney. One down, four to go.

Beastie Boys Message Board Non-Beastie Boys General Political Discussion View Full Version : Olympics Echewta "It's not going to be a warm and friendly environment," said Steve Roush, the USOC's director of sports partnerships. "We're preparing for a hostile environment."
If the experience of the U.S. soccer team in Mexico earlier this month is any indication, American athletes have every reason to be concerned about Athens.
The boos and whistles nearly drowned out the national anthem in Guadalajara, but that was just the beginning. Midway through the Feb. 10 match, the home fans taunted the American players with chants of "Osama, Osama" as Mexico knocked the U.S. team out of the Olympics.
"You have to realize that people hate Americans," said Stacy Dragila, who won the women's pole vault gold in Sydney.
Because of that, the most important members of the U.S. Olympic team may not know the difference between a javelin and a shot put, or how deep the swimming pool is.
They are the sports psychologists who will accompany the American team to Athens. There will be up to 10 of them for the 560 or so athletes, and their mission will be to calm fears and insulate athletes from outside distractions.

I have spent a couple of years being my own personal trainer, which required me to familiarize myself with equipment, training plans, and my own anatomy and physiology. Since I'm coming back from a lay-off period with an ultimate goal of doing a triathlon, I turned to this book hoping to find some unique information. What I found was, essentially, my old training routine! The basic weight training exercises I had always used for a full body workout was all this book contained. On a positive n...

The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Rugby

Very good book on general weight lifting. It's like a good manual for a college weight lifting class. The routines really are a more general/basic rugby workout w/o the split between tight 5, forwards, etc. Since you're in different positions, you'll need a very different workout. Still, it's a good book when it comes to understanding form and switching one exercise for another. For the best rugby routine, ask your teams trainer and supplement it with this book

The Triathlete's Training Diary for Dummies is a good book for getting someone in shape for a triathlon, but not necessarily completely prepared for one. The book does give a 12-week training plan that splits the workouts between distance, sprints, and weight training but does not specify how much time should be spent on each of the three sports. For instance, I could follow the entire training plan without setting foot in a pool or on a bike. The training plan also does not specify practicin...
