History of Swimming
Swimming has been known since prehistoric times. Drawings from the Stone Age were found in "the cave of swimmers" near Wadi Sora (or Sura) in the southwestern part of Egypt. Written references date from 2000 B.C., including Gilgamesh, the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Bible (Ezekiel 47:5, Acts 27:42, Isaiah 25:11), Beowulf, and other sagas. In 1538 Nicolas Wynman, German professor of languages, wrote the first swimming book, "Colymbetes". Competitive swimming in Europe started around 1800, mostly using breaststroke. The front crawl, then called the trudgen, was introduced in 1873 by John Arthur Trudgen, copying it from Native Americans. Swimming was part of the first modern Olympic games in 1896 in Athens. In 1902 the trudgen was improved by Richard Cavill, using the flutter kick. In 1908, the world swimming association, Federation Internationale de Natation de Amateur (FINA), was formed. Butterfly was first a variant of breaststroke, until it was accepted as a separate style in 1952.
Ancient Times
Written references date back to 2000 B.C. including Gilgamesh, the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Bible (Ezekiel 47:5, Acts 27:42, Isaiah 25:11), Beowulf, and other sagas, although the style is never described. There are also many mentions of swimmers in the Vatican, Borgian and Bourbon codices.

Welcome to Dundee Arnhall Swimming Club History Section The History Of Arnhall Swimming Club The club was originally founded as the Dundee Eastern Co-operative Society Swimming Club for the participation of all staff and members of that Co-operative At that stage, the club was not run as a competitive club but more for social gatherings. In 1900 the committee of the club decided that as there were a number of good young swimmers who were training regularly, but not competing at all, they would seek registration with the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association. This was frowned upon by the Co-operative society as they saw it as a removal of the social aspect of the club. The club name was then changed to Arnhall Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club and was affiliated to the SASA. The club name was derived from the fact that the original President lived in Arnhall Drive off Perth Road in Dundee. As a competitive club Arnhall took part in many events throughout Scotland and in addition ran a very successful water polo team for many years. Other notable events in Dundee Arnhall's past include a number of swimmers who have been Scottish Amateur open water champions at both Junior, Juvenile, and Senior levels. Swimmers who have been selected to swim for Scotland such as Mandy Craig in Switzerland, Donna Milne and Neil Foster in Egypt and Drew Burnett and Gemma Tierney in Holland.

THE NEED TO SWIM

In a Seaside town, the importance of water safety, for children and adults alike, takes on more significance than it might in other towns. THE ADVANTAGES OF SWIMMING But there are many other benefits to joining a club than becoming a stronger swimmer. Fitness! Doctors are agreed that the exercise involved in regular swimming is one of the very best all round ways of keeping fit. With the water taking the weight of the swimmer's body, all the muscles can be exercised and provide a perfect cardio-vascular work out. But just going to the pool may not be enough. That's where we come in! Return to Top WHAT TYPE OF CLUB ARE WE? Return to Top ARE WE QUALIFIED? Yes! The club is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association Each year we run Life Saving courses and administer the Brighton Pier To Pier Race on behalf of Brighton Council. Many of our teachers and coaches are qualified life savers and club sessions are covered by a national insurance scheme implemented by the ASA. All our teachers and coaches are qualified under ASA certification. Return to Top COMPETITIVE SWIMMING Our club has exclusive use of the 3 Prince Regent Complex pools from 6.00 pm till 10.00 pm on Friday nights, during which time sessions are held for swimmers of all abilities from junior and senior non-swimmers to national standard competitive swimmers. The duration of these sessions varies from 30 minutes to 75 minutes. Swimmers are selected to compete for the club in interclub galas and in County championships.

For years people have gathered at the springs to bathe, rest and worship. Many people believe that there are curative properties associated with the hot mineral water and refer to the Springs as "the healing waters" It is rumored that long ago the Springs were neutral ground and shared in peace by all.
Once part of the original Fort Hall reservation, the springs and land were part of a treaty agreement between the Indians and the US Government in the late 1800's. The federal government purchased the springs and land, approximately 178 acres including the springs.
A 1902 act granted the lands to the State of Idaho to be held by the State for public use. Later all rights to the operation, management, control, maintenance and improvement of the lands and property were vested in the

We have a Tradition of team, of friendship, of support, of fast swimming, of loud cheering, of hard work of BLACK and of ORANGE. Those two colors are worn with Pride as they symbolize every tradition that this team stands for. We are teammates and we are competitors, and when we bring those together we are unstoppable. Princeton became fully coeducational in the fall of 1969, and it did not take long for women to begin organizing themselves into athletic teams. Swimmer Jane Fremon ’75 and diver Cece Herron ’74 were the pioneers, competing on an exhibition level in men’s meets during the 1970-71 season. The two went on to win enough points between them to give Princeton a fifth-place finish at the Eastern Women’s Swimming League championships, with Fremon winning three events. A team was formally organized the following year, under three-year captain Carol Brown ’75. The team got off to a perfect 8-0 start and finished third at the EWSL championships. The star of that team was Cathy Corcione ’74, who had actually retired from swimming following her performance at the 1968 Olympics. In that first year she set national records in two of the three events in which she won EWSL titles.

    Swimming Varsity Match History
1892 witnessed the inaugural men's swimming Varsity Match held annually since then, bar breaks during the wars, between Oxford and Cambridge. The first event was held at the Kensington Pools in London and many subsequent matches were held in London, even as recently as 1999 in Ealing. Originally the gala consisted of three individual freestyle events with two swimmers from Oxford and two from Cambridge competing in each event. The exact distances varied considerably from year to year but roughly equated to a sprint, an approximate 100m and a quarter mile; although the middle event varied from 100 yards to 174 to 240 during the 1890s. Each race could be won by either university on a points basis of 5 for first, 3 for second and 1 for third. The overall winner was the winner of the most events. In 1897 a team event was introduced to the programme, with each university fielding seven swimmers. However the decision of who won the Varsity match still went purely on the individuals. This format remained through until the 1920s. A points system was introduced in 1926. However it was not standardized as events were added and the scoring system changed so total points varied from year to year.
