SiteMap USMS History History of Masters Swimming, by Ransom Arthur, M.D. HISTORY OF MASTERS SWIMMING by Ransom J. Arthur, M.D. The Masters meet has a short history. I had been trying to interest people in Swimming and in the Amateur Athletic Union in such a program for the last ten years without any success, even though the track and field athletes had placed a trail for us to follow. However, during John Spannuth 's term as President of the American Swimming Coaches Association (1968-69) he gave me encouragement to write about such a program and to try to get it inaugurated in the autumn of 1969. He offered the use of the Amarillo Aquatic Club facility in Amarillo, TX for the first meet to be held in May 1970. We also had the encouragement of Bruce Hopping, Chairman and Founder of the Kalos Kagathos Foundation of Laguna Beach, CA. There were many, many obstacles to overcome, and for a variety of reasons the entry forms did not go out until about two months before the meet. It was a rousing success for an inaugural event. Since May 1940 the program has expanded enormously, and innumerable meets have been held across the country. Even though the first meet was AAU sanctioned and every contestant was required to hold an AAU card, we were not yet officially accepted by the AAU.

Search Synchronized Swimming Table of Contents History International Competition Other Resources The great Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman, planted the first seed of what was to become synchronized swimming when she performed "water ballet" in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome in 1907. Katherine "Kay" Curtis didn't see the performance, but she may well have been inspired by newspaper accounts. As a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1915, Curtis began experimenting with underwater swimming stunts. The following year, she was instrumental in having synchronized swimming added to the school's physical education program for women. Curtis moved on to the University of Chicago, where she founded a water ballet club in 1923. Sixty of her swimmers, known as the "Modern Mermaids," performed at the 1934 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, attracting national and international publicity. The sport quickly became popular among young women in the Chicago area and Curtis developed rules for competition, based essentially on the scoring methods used in gymnastics, diving, and figure skating. The first recorded competition was held May 27, 1939, between Chicago Teacher's College, coached by Curtis, and Wright Junior College, also in Chicago.

Home Glossary >> History of Swimming History of Swimming Ancient Times Written references date back to 2000 B.C. including Gilgamesh, the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Bible (Ezekiel 47:5, Acts 27:42, Isaiah 25:11), Beowulf, and other sagas, although the style is never described. There are also many mentions of swimmers in the Vatican, Borgian and Bourbon codices. The Greeks did not include swimming in the ancient Olympic Games, but practiced the sport, often building swimming pools as part of their baths. One common insult in Greece was to say about somebody that he/she neither knew how to run nor swim. The Etruscans at Tarquinia (Italy) show pictures of swimmers in 600 B.C., and tombs in Greece depict swimmers 500 B.C. The greek Scyllis was taken prisoner on a ship of the Persian king Xerxes I in 480 B.C. After learning about an impending attack on the Greek navy, he stole a knife and jumped overboard. During the night and using a snorkel made from reed, he swam back to the ships and cut them loose. It was also said that the ability to swim saved the Greeks at the Battle of Salamis, while the Persians all drowned when their ships were destroyed. Julius Caesar was also known to be a good swimmer. A series of reliefs from 850 B.C. in the Nimrud Gallery of the British Museum show swimmers, mostly in military context, often using swimming aids. In Japan swimming was one of the noble skills of the Samurai, and historic records describe swimming competitions in 36 B.C. organized by emperor Suigui (spelling unclear), which are the first known swimming races.

Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.

The Association was founded in 1897 and details of the early days are somewhat vague. During this time Mr. Graham Huxtable (1932-38) and Mrs. Bernice Hooper (1936-39) were Welsh Champions and they are both still active within the Association. In early post war years Welsh swimming was at its lowest ebb, as few pools remained open during the war, with swimmers either being called up or very few competitions available. It was during 1952 that pools were beginning to reopen and schools began to take an active part in providing swimmers for the future. The building of the Wales Empire Pool at Cardiff for the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games supplied an impetus so urgently needed by the sport in the Principality, which resulted in many more clubs being formed. This continued through the sixties and seventies, aided by the tremendous surge in the construction of new sports centers and swimming pools, all resulting in additional organisation and responsibilities for the Association.
