Hurricane History
In The Beginning: 1994-95
This team was quite literally started overnight in September of 1994. With a list of six swimmers and lots of phone numbers, Paul Rowe and Carol Restrepo decided to seize the opportunity granted by Haddonwood owner, Tony Zanin, to start a new kind of swim team. "Every swimmer, regardless of ability, deserves the opportunity to grow and succeed in a small and nurturing, but challenging environment." Every swimmer has the right to excel in his/her swimming at their own level, and a coach whose goal for each swimmer is 'Be the Best YOU can be' in the pool, and in your everyday life! Now all Carol and Paul needed was followers to this new philosophy in the South Jersey swimming world. To their surprise and amazement, their Hurricane program has grown to be a very much respected team in the area!! The first practice in September, 1994 was attended by 29 swimmers! After only one weekend of nearly begging former Voyagers and friends to be the charter members, word spread, interest exploded, and the first practice launched the growth of a new swim team!! By our first year's end the team had swelled to 81 swimmers. The Hurricane Swim Team was now actually getting respect!!! But there was on little problem - at the end of the second year, Paul and Carol were looking for a new home for this new, rising swim team! It seemed that Wal-Mart was buying OUR POOL and OUR HOME!! Now what? Carol started the endless phone calls and meeting with area pool representatives basically begging for pool time. She and Paul wanted this team to continue, but the team needed a pool!

Swimming has been known since prehistoric times. Drawings from the Stone Age were found in "the cave of swimmers" near Wadi Sora (or Sura) in the southwestern part of Egypt . Written references date from 2000 B.C. , including Gilgamesh , the Iliad , the Odyssey , the Bible (Ezekiel 47:5, Acts 27:42, Isaiah 25:11), Beowulf , and other sagas. In Nicolas Wynman, German professor of languages, wrote the first swimming book, "Colymbetes". Competitive swimming in Europe started around , mostly using breaststroke . The front crawl , then called the trudgen , was introduced in by John Arthur Trudgen, copying it from Native Americans . Swimming was part of the first modern Olympic games in in Athens . In the trudgen was improved by Richard Cavill, using the flutter kick. In , the world swimming association, Federation Internationale de Natation de Amateur (FINA) , was formed. Butterfly was first a variant of breaststroke , until it was accepted as a separate style in Table of contents 1 Ancient Times 2 Middle Ages to 1800 3 The Pre-Olympic Era to 1896 4 The Modern Olympic Era after 1896 ... edit

Drawings from the Stone Age were found in "the cave of swimmers" near Wadi Sora (or Sura) in the southwestern part of Egypt near Libya . These pictures seem to show breaststroke or dog paddle , although it may also be possible that the movements have a ritual meaning unrelated to swimming. This cave is also featured in the movie

Elder Panther Swimming History
The Elder swimming team splashed into prominence in its first season. Allan "Dutch" Mangold led the Panthers to a fifth-place finish in Elder's initial season of 1928-29. Dutch went on to earn third place in the 40-yard freestyle event in the state meet in Columbus. Elder won its first-ever GCL swimming championship in 1936 under Coach Red Donahue. Father Henry Ausdenmore led the Panther aquamen to another league title in 1937. Coach Paul Hartlaub's championship magic blended with Father Vince Schneider's coaching to earn the Purple and White two consecutive GCL and district championships in 1947 and 1948. The Panthers finished thirteenth in the 1947 state meet and climbed to a fourth place finish, Elder's best ever, in the 1948 classic at Columbus. Jim Trefzger won Elder's only state swimming title in 1948 as he won the 100-yard breaststroke event with a then school-record time of 1:06.2. Trefzger finished second in his favorite event at Columbus in 1947 and 1949. Swimming was revived as an interscholastic sport in Pantherland in the fall of 1963 under Coach Tom Davoran. From then until 1970, Coach Davoran led the Panthers as they regained their competitive level in the sport. Coach Davoran's top individual performer, Bruce Rathman, finished second in the 100-yard butterfly event in the state meet in 1966, after taking top honors in his specialty in the Cincinnati district swim.

Her consolation came in the 4 by 100 metres freestyle relay, which remainsto this day one of the most poignant races in Olympic swimming history.
    http://www.times-olympics.co.uk/communities/swimming/swimminghistory.html
OLYMPIC HISTORY Swimming has been part of the Games since the beginning of the modern Olympiad in 1896 but the first two Games were rather quirky aquatic affairs, and exclusively male. The first was a 100 metres (or thereabouts) race between three Greek sailors across the Bay of Zea near Piraeus (not far from a place where cave drawings offer evidence of an ancient sport) that started with the rivals jumping from a rowing boat. The winner was Ioannis Malokinis in 2 minutes and 20 seconds. The second Games, in Paris, involved races up the Seine, one in which obstacles were placed in the way of swimmers and one where the point was to swim the whole distance under water - not much fun for the spectators! Still, at least the races were held with the tide, not against it. That helped John Arthur Jarvis on his way to capturing the 4,000 metres freestyle (an event never seen before or since) in less than an hour - a time many of those who swim for charity these days would be quite proud of.
