Introduction Swedish is the most widely spoken of the Scandinavian languages, which constitute a branch of the Germanic languages, in turn a part of the Indo-European family. There are approximately 9 million speakers of Swedish. In addition to the 8 million people of Sweden, about 300,000 speakers live on the southwestern and southern coasts of Finland. Swedish is closely related to Norwegian and Danish. Historically it is closer to Danish, but the years of Swedish hegemony over Norway (l8l4-1905) brought the two languages closer together. A Swedish person today has more difficulty understanding Danish than Norwegian. The Swedish alphabet consists of twenty-nine letters, the regular twenty-six of the English alphabet, plus

AUGUSTANA COLLEGE SUMMER SCHOOL IN SWEDEN 2002 (ASSIS 18) The Augustana College Summer School in Sweden (ASSIS) offers five weeks of intensive Swedish language instruction in a setting conducive to its retention and practical application at Grebbestads folkhögskola in the village of Grebbestad on the Swedish west coast. The program culminates with a week in Stockholm, the Swedish capital, and runs from May 31 through July 14, 2002. The deadline for applications is April 1, 2002, but we encourage all interested persons to contact us as soon as possible to receive further information and application materials. The program is arranged by Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, a private coeducational college of liberal arts and sciences, founded by Swedish immigrants in 1860. The College's Department of Scandinavian Studies is the largest of its kind in the United States, and the strong ties to Sweden have resulted in reciprocal exchange programs with two Swedish universities, scholarships that enable Swedish students to study at Augustana, and, since 1982, the Augustana Summer School in Sweden. The folkhögskola in Grebbestad is just over 100 years old. Like its 130-odd counterparts all over Sweden, its main objective is adult and community education. All students board at the school, which is relatively small only about seventy or so students during the academic year. During the past decades

Finland is a multilingual country where Finnish, Swedish and Sami are spoken. While Swedish is spoken in Finland by a small minority, they enjoy the same rights than the Finnish speaking majority thanks to an advanced legal framework that sets the Finnish model as an example to other multilingual countries in the world
The Finno-Swedes, Swedish-speaking population in Finland

The Swedish-speaking population in Finland is mainly descended from peasants and fishermen who settled on the western and southern coasts of Finland between the years 1000 and 1250 A.D. Finland belonged to Sweden until 1809, when it became part of the Russian empire. In 1917 Finland declared itself independent and Finnish became the official language of the State. After being a part of Sweden for 650 years, Swedish remained the language of administration throughout the first half of the 19th century. Under Swedish rule, many ethnic Finns changed their language and started speaking Swedish, but most of them reverted to Finnish in the late 1800s. Some families even have a Finnish-speaking and a Swedish-speaking branch.
