Introduction
Svenska , as the Swedes call their language, is spoken by the approximately 8 million inhabitants of Sweden, as well as another 300,000 people in Finland. It belongs to the North Germanic sub-group of the Indo-European language family (English is in the West Germanic sub-group), which includes Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic, and Faroese. It is extremely similar to Danish and Norwegian, especially in written form. Its grammar and syntax are very similar to English, more so than German or French. Many Swedish words are easily recognizable by English speakers, and even more so by German speakers. So naturally, Swedish is a relatively easy language for English speakers to learn. Pronunciation is a little difficult at first, especially due to the vowels, and a beginner should listen to a native in order to get a good idea of the Swedish sounds. This course was designed for beginners and no previous knowledge of Swedish is assumed. However, the lessons may also be helpful for those people who have had previous experience and would like to improve their grammar or just simply practice or brush up.

Some Notes on
the Swedish Language

Något om svenska språket By Nils William Olsson, Ph.D., F.A.S.G. The Swedish language is a part and parcel of the Indo-European languages, stretching from India to Europe and through migration to the U.S., Canada, Mexico and South America. The language is a part of the North Germanic languages and is identified as an East Scandinavian variant together with Danish. The west branch includes Norwegian and Icelandic. The main difference between these two Scandinavian branches is that Swedish and Danish have no diphthongs, or at least a very few. Thus the word for stone in Swedish and Danish is sten , whereas in Norwegian and Icelandic it is stein . The same thing is true for the word for bone – in Swedish it is ben , in Norwegian it is bein . There are other differences, but I don't wish to become technical. A few diphthongs can be found in Swedish. Thus a parish is Skåne is Raus and the name of the month of August is Augusti . The man's name of August is often pronounced Agust in the vernacular, showing how Swedes avoid diphthongs if at all possible. Curiously the Swede has no problem with the word for

About the author and this course
Why learn Swedish? Swedish is a fascinating and expressive language. It is also a melodic language, admittedly difficult to pronounce like a native because of its characteristic sing-song rhythm, but otherwise not more complicated to learn than English. Most Swedes born after World War II do speak or understand English - many of them very well, actually - and you will probably be able to have a memorable and enjoyable stay in Sweden without any deeper knowledge of Swedish. But you will find that just a few words of Swedish will work as a wonderful door-key to the Swedes, who have a reputation of being rather reserved to strangers. Addressing someone in his or her native language is a matter of respect, a way of showing that you play by their rules, so to speak. To learn a language means to learn to understand the culture where it is spoken and the people who speak it. In a way, to learn a language opens up a new world.

The lessons have different levels. The most easy lessons come first in the list. Most lessons assume that the student understands some Swedish. In front of each lesson title you will find a four digit code which represents the year and the month that the lesson was added to this collection. The grammatical topic can be found after the lesson between parentheses. If a lesson title is followed by the tag [Javascript] then the lesson contains exercises which require a Javascript-capable browser.

Swedish is spoken by approximately 9 million people in Sweden and some 300 000 in Finland. Written Swedish is quite similar to German and Dutch; Norwegians and Swedes understand each other perfectly. What is difficult (at first) and characteristic with the Swedish language is the pronunciation. I therefore suggest you take a brief look at the

It is the native tongue of some 90 per cent of the country's almost 9 million inhabitants. Swedish is also one of the two national languages of Finland (alongside Finnish). Finland was part of Sweden until 1809, and at present 300 000 people there (6 per cent of the population) have Swedish as their mother tongue. About 25 000 of them live on the wholly Swedish-speaking Åland Islands. There have also been Swedish-speaking communities in Estonia since the Middle Ages, but after the Second World War only pockets remained. From the mid-19th century until the Second World War more than one million people emigrated from Sweden, mainly to North America, and it is estimated that several hundred thousand people now speak Swedish in various parts of the world. Swedish is a Nordic language, belonging to the Germanic branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Its sister languages are Danish and Norwegian, while the other Nordic languages Icelandic and Faroese might perhaps best be described as half-sisters, retaining more of their ancient character. In this perspective, English and German may be regarded as cousins.
