Guestbook - part 4
This is the part of the guestbook with older entries. Thanks for this cool dictionary!! I have friends from Bonn who are staying in Boulder, and one of them thinks it's just the funniest thing to tack on a paragraph of German to his e-mails! I think they're trying to tell me I need to get busy learning more! You're the best. AUSGETZEICHNET!

N p p and halogenated solvents. Data are also presented for a polyester resin in supercritical dimethyl ether, chlorodifluoromethane, and CO with several cosolvents, and for poly(lactide-co-glycolide) copolymers of varying composition in supercritical CO and halogenated solvents. CO is a weak solvent that can not dissolve nonpolar polymers without extreme temperature and pressure, and that has temperature sensitive energetic mismatches with polar polymers. However, CO does exhibit specific interactions with fluoropolymers enabling solubility at moderate pressures and temperatures. Polymer solubility can be increased by the introduction of a liquid or SCF cosolvent to tune the energetics of the system. Halogenated solvents are also used with polar polymers as a comparison to CO ka E. coli . Three different approaches can be used to immobilize streptavidin onto Au, direct adsorption of the protein on bare Au, binding the protein to a biotinylated thiol SAM on Au, and binding the protein to a biotinylated disulfide monolayer on Au. The biotinylated thiol approach yielded the best results. High specificity for E. coli

New Premises for CTI Modern Languages
As part of the extension of the Language Institute at the University of Hull into the newly-built Ferens Building, CTI Modern Languages has recently moved into three new offices which are located on the bridge between the Ferens Building and the Larkin Building where we were housed previously. At the moment our accommodation can best be described as 'compact', but we are promised additional space once the conversion of the Larkin Building is complete. The good news for all of us is that the new building includes excellent new computer laboratories and a spacious self-access area, as well as an impressive interpreting suite.

Machine Assisted Translation in Language Learning 6 -7 December 1995, Coventry This 'expert seminar' was organised by the CTI Centre for Modern Languages, University of Hull in association with the Centre for Information Technology in Language Learning, Coventry University. It was the sixth in a series of such events for invited participants introduced by the CTI Centre for Modern Languages in 1990. The seminar programme included speakers involved in professional translation and speakers involved in teaching and research in higher education, and provided a forum for discussion between the two.

How Language Works
Mike Gasser
Indiana University
1 Introduction
Students studying linguistics for the first time often have misconceptions about what it is about and what it can offer them. They may think that linguists are authorities on what is correct and what is incorrect in a given language. But linguistics is the science of language; it treats language and linguistic behavior as phenomena to be studied scientifically. Linguists want to figure out how language works . They are no more in the business of making value judgments about people's language than geologists are in the business of making value judgments about the behavior of the earth.
The book: organization and conventions
Organization
Languages
Most linguistics texts draw their examples from an unconstrained set of languages. This has the disadvantage that students are left with little sense of how the different aspects of each language fit together. It also invites the kind of errors that may crop up when linguists rely on examples from a wide variety of other linguists. For these reasons, almost all of the examples in this book are limited to a set of ten languages. You can see the word for 'language' in each of these ten languages in the upper-left corner of the Table of Contents page, and, together with words in seven other languages, at the top of each page. If you're interested in knowing more about these languages, each is described briefly in

  • In Europe, Going Global Means, Alas, English (Current usage/news)
...As European banks and corporations burst national boundaries and go global, many are making English the official corporate language.
Two years ago, when France, Germany and Spain merged their aerospace industries into one company, they not only gave it an English name - the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company, or EADS - they also made English its language.
In Germany, the national postal service, Deutsche Post World Net, increasingly uses English as its working language. Smaller companies are doing likewise. In Finland, the elevator maker Kone adopted English in the 1970's; in Italy, Merloni Elettrodomestici, a midsize home appliance maker, did so in the mid-1990's. Management meetings at big banks like Deutsche Bank in Germany and Credit Suisse in Switzerland are routinely in English
In Toulouse, in the south of France, English has been the official language at the aircraft manufacturer Airbus since its founding more than 30 years ago as a loose consortium of aerospace companies from France, Germany, Britain and Spain. Partly, Airbus executives say, this was because of a bad experience on an earlier project, building the Anglo-French Concorde supersonic jet: Concorde's French chief engineer, despite fluent English, refused memos from his British counterpart unless they were in French.
In executive meetings, if a majority speak French, German or Spanish, then the majority tongue is spoken; the minutes are in English. On the factory floor, local languages prevail.

Scholarship Opportunities Scholar Abroad ... R. Anderson Entry 2 Robert 'BJ' Anderson Entry 2 Week 1: "I Think I'm Getting Cold Feet" I'm not sure if my stomach had adjusted yet to the meal schedule, though. Every morning, I have the same thing: two pieces of toast, fruit juice, coffee (which I usually don't drinkI'd much rather have hot chocolate!), and a pre-packaged Spanish pastry, which I always put in my backpack for a snack at school. Yeah, pretty exciting huh? Lunch, the biggest meal of the day, is at about 3 pm, just in time for "The Simpsons" dubbed in Spanish. It's a huge meal, and requires a nap promptly afterwards. That is why nearly all of the businesses close between 2-5 pm everyday - everybody's eating and then sleeping! It took my a while to solve that mystery. Dinner really doesn't consist of much. I'm almost used to not eating anything more than a piece of fruit and glass of water in the evening. This is supposed to be "Sunny Southern Spain", right? Well, that was Malaga, where I flew into. Here in Ronda, it gets pretty stinking cold! In Andalucia (the Spanish state where I am), nobody really knows what snow looks like because it NEVERS snows here. Well, i must be a bad luck charm because last Thursday (or was it Friday?) it snowed. It was cool seeing the snow on palm trees and orange trees. Sorry, I was stupid and didn't take any pictures before it all melted. The problem here is that they have no indoor heating (or cooling). So, while here outside it is warmer than it is back in the States this time of the year, it is the same tempature (or colder!) inside! Normally, I can see my breath in the apartment where I am staying. This is not good, because I don't like being so cold, and the only real warm place is my bed, so I take more naps than I probaly should.
