Civil War: Picture Books
Polacco, Patricia. Pink and Say. Philomel Books: New York This book is beautifully illustrated, which only enhances the strong bonds of friendship portrayed in this story. This picture book, which takes place during the Civil War, tells the story of two boys and their fight for a common goal, freedom. The reason why I chose this book is because it has the basic concept of friendship integrated into elements of the Civil War. The story illustrates the tone throughout the Civil War.
Harness, Cheryl. Ghosts of the Civil War. Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers: New York This story is uniquely told through dialogue of modern day children, which travel back in time to the Civil War. The story is broken down battle by battle. It explains the significance of the Civil War and how it has influenced present day society. Throughout the story, the children realize how their lives have changed as a result of the Civil War. The book is beautifully illustrated. The characters' emotion is defined through their detailed facial expressions.

Scope of this FAQ
A few of the newgroups listed have short descriptions that evidently were added by persons other than the proponents. Suggestions for additions to this FAQ are most welcome. Many thanks to those who saw earlier versions of this FAQ and added to or corrected the information posted earlier. And special thanks to the persons who wrote suggesting that I post a copy of this FAQ on the World Wide WebI have now done so here, http://learninfreedom.org/ed-newsgroups.html at my Web site, which has links to other information about on-line resources for self-education. Some of the newsgroups listed here are very inactive (possibly because they are not carried at many sites). Some are very active, with verifiable frequent postings from multiple countries. But in general the proportion of all Internet users who discuss issues on Usenet has been declining since 1997 as Web-based discussion boards and E-mail mailing lists have become more popular. For a more up-to-date picture of where people discuss education issues on-line, see this site's Discussion Groups about Education Reform and Home-Schooling page.

The following analysis is based on a random sample of the questions available in the Ask The Library archive. For technical reasons, the early questions (1998, 1999) are stored separately. The sample we work with comprise 10% of the questions from the beginning of 2000 till May 2002.

We have specified three main settings and five situations that generate questions (Table 1). From Table 2 we see that most of the questions are generated by people in their private lives and by young people in connection with their school work. The persons we define as citizens are of course largely the same individuals that we encounter at work, school or studies. We are not counting individuals as such, but persons in specific social roles.

Who are the Vikings? Scandinavian R5B Section 2/Spring 2003 Instructors: Nichole Sterling and Kendra Willson MWF 10:10-11:00/Dwinelle 243 Course Description In this course we will examine the various ways in which the Vikings were represented by medieval Scandinavians and by those who were on the other end of their Viking activities. What kind of people were the Vikings? Is their reputation deserved? In attempting to arrive at answers to these questions, we will consider some Norse sagas and poems, as well as a selection of stories, poetry, and chronicle accounts from other European countries ranging from Ireland to Russia. All of the reading for this course will be in English translation and no prior knowledge of the Vikings or of medieval Scandinavia is expected. Course Goals This course builds on what you have already learned in the Reading and Composition A section. We will continue to practice analytical writing as well as thinking and speaking about texts in a critical way. In addition, this course will focus on creating research papers, including how to locate sources and use them to create an interesting and well-developed research paper. submitted by Pat Richley Foy, dearmyrtle@aol.com In honor of 2002 October Family History Month, the folks at www.FamilySearch.org added three huge databases to their search. It was worth waiting through all those "NOT AVAILABLE NOW" messages while they were working on their website! Two methods of searching are available:
  • "global search" - Just type in your ancestor's name on the search tab data fields, and press enter. Matching names from all databases at the site will show up on the hit list. Entries from the IGI, Ancestral File, etc. may be listed in addition to any matching entries in the census records. "specific census search"
