144. American West - European Emigration
In Smaland, the heartland of Swedish emigration history, a House of Emigrants has been built, where exhibitions, archives and a library serve anyone interested
http://www.americanwest.com/swedemigr/pages/emigra.htm
EUROPEAN EMIGRATION
Swedish emigration to America is rather typical for European emigration westward to America during the 19th century. Therefore, we have elected to present the background of the Swedish emigration at that time. Painting "The Emigrants" by Swedish artist Knut Ekwall, (1843-1912). This painting depicts the artist's vision of what the Atlantic crossings could be like for the immigrants. Courtesy by Lena Björk Kaplan, President of the American Scandinavian Foundation in New York, owner of this beautiful work.
A Review of Swedish Emigration to America The history of Swedish emigration to America goes further back in time than that of the United States. Swedes started to come in 1638, just eighteen years after the landing of the "MAYFLOWER." The tidal wave of Swedish emigration began in the mid 1840s, when the first organized emigrant groups started to arrive in New York. These farmers destined to Iowa and Illinois were followed during the period up to 1930 by almost 1.3 million countrymen. The Swedes still rank number seven among the European immigrant groups. In proportion to the population of their home countries, only the British Isles and Norway surpassed Sweden in the number of immigrants. The effect of this exodus from Sweden reached its climax around 1910, when 1.4 million Swedish first and second generation immigrants were listed as living in the U.S. Compare this to Sweden's population at the time: 5.5 million. Roughly one fifth of all Swedes had their homes in America right before World War I !

148. Philosophers : Christina Of Sweden
Very short biography.
http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/phil/philo/phils/christina.html
Christina of Sweden
Swedish Disciple of Descartes
Perhaps best known as the indirect cause of death of Rene Descartes, Princess Christina of Sweden was a student of the master philosopher. Descartes died from a cold caught after grueling, infamous 5 a.m. philosophy sessions with Cartesian Christina, in the cold of her Swedish castle. She is well-known as the provacateur of Descartes' "Letter on Love." This was the beginning of a number of letters that passed between the two, which influenced Christina to eventually call Descartes to her home in Sweden in order for him to better tutor her in the Cartesian methods of philosophy. Descartes succumbed to Stockholm's cold in a mere five months. A well educated and intelligent monarch, she converted to Catholicism soon after Descares' death, and after abdicating the throne in 1654 she moved to Rome where she died alone, unknown and penniless. Some of her works include:
  • Maxims of a Queen(compiled 1907)
  • Lettters de Descartes(compiled 1663)

Carl-Axel Hall
Born in Borås on 10th June, 1947. He studied (mainly piano) 1966-1973 at Ingesund and at the State College of Music in Gothenburg. He then studied composition etc. privately in Gothenburg with Lennart Hall. He has been teacher of contemporary music, ensemble playing and chamber music at the State College of Music, Gothenburg, since 1974, and has also worked as a conductor at Utomjordiska Teatern.
As a self-taught composer he has studied all the various forms of western music and he employs all the techniques available, but in a language of his own. He listens to all kinds of music and he looks on his own compositions as holding up a mirror to life. He does not imitate the musical language of other ages, but one way or another he has been influenced by them. He is at pains to establish contact with both audiences and performers, but this does not in any way lead him to refrain from complexity or organic rhythm.

Erland Skoglund
Born on 27th May 1915 in Kilafors. His interest in music developed relatively late, but starting as a military bandsman he graduated to professional studies. His cursus honorarium at the State College of Music, Stockholm, included composition studies with Lars-Erik Larsson and counterpoint studies with Åke Uddén. During the 1950s and 1960s he headed several different choirs and orchestras in Stockholm until, in 1965, he became a military Director of Music with what subsequently became the Örebro Regional Music Authority, a post which he retained until his retirement. In addition, he conducted popular and regular concerts given by the orchestras of the Örebro Orchestral Foundation, and he was a music columnist on the newspaper Nerikes Allehanda.
Erland Skoglund's relatively sparse output includes Variations for Wind Instruments, A Cantata for the Official Opening of Årsta Community Centre, Fanfares and Jubilee Music for the 7th centenary of the incorporation of Örebro, chamber music for various combinations of instruments, choral motets, songs, light music and film music.
