England travel to Gothenburg on Wednesday to face Sweden in their final away fixture before the European Championships in June. Sven-Goran Eriksson takes a depleted side back to his homeland and, given recent history, that could prove a fatal mistake. England have failed to beat the Scandinavians in their last five encounters, albeit Sweden have only won one of those as well. Here then, are the last five matches between the two nations...

Potash Production in Northern Sweden: History and Ecological Effects of a Pre-industrial Forest Exploitation
Environment and History 4(1998): 345-358 Potash (potassium carbonate; K2CO3) was one of the most important industrial chemicals in Europe prior to the 20th century. It was obtained from wood-ash from broadleaved trees, which was refined in several steps into the pure chemical. The production primarily took place in the periphery of Europe, in Russia and in the United states. In Sweden, potash was produced in the southern parts on a larger scale from the 17th century. In northern Sweden the production started in the early 19th century, reached considerable proportions within a few decades, and then ceased completely in the 1860s. The trees used were primarily birches ( Betula pubescens and B. pendula ). Previous research on the subject of Swedish potash production has concluded that the production ceased due to shortage of raw material. Through studies of historical records and experimental potash production we challenge these conclusions. In our opinion potash production in northern Sweden lost out to German producers who started to produce potash industrially at the same time that production in northern Sweden ceased. The ecological significance of the potash production is difficult to estimate, primarily because the impact caused by this form of forest exploitation is obscured by subsequent logging and other human activities. Nevertheless, the removal of large old broadleaved trees was one important step in the large-scale transformation of the forest landscape which has influenced the structure and function of north Swedish forest ecosystems.

Sweden History
Some war against Denmark gives us much land and when Sweden was in its greatness the border was like the picture below. After Karl XI's reform of the army in the 1670th Sweden got the world's best trained and equipped army. The army meets its waterloo in the battle of Poltava in 1713 against Russia. In the peace in 1721 Sweden lost its position as a "stormakt" great nation. And after that we lost much more.

Sweden Home The Connemara Pony in Sweden by Jenny Hagenblad The first Connemaras to be imported for breeding purposes came to Sweden in 1964 when the Weckner family imported Roundstone Chief CPS 151 and the mares Autumn Sunset CPS 2193, Easter Blues CPS 2247 and Atlantic Blue CPS 2408. In 1963 Roundstone Chief won his class at Clifden Show, and he fulfilled the expectation in his new home country. Together with all three of the Weckners' mares he left stallion sons (Golden Rover, Blue Chief and Nice-n'-Easy) and many of his offspring have done well in the ridden arena. Of his sons Blue Chief has been Champion at the breed show and Nice-n'-Easy has received the Elite premium. At about the same time, but ignorant of the Weckners, Mrs Karin Johansson brought the stallion Slieve Dara CPS 146 and the mares Keehaune Belle CPS 2310 and Autumn Holiday CPS 2200 to Sweden. Slieve Dara had a successful life, leaving over 200 progeny after fourteen years at stud, as well as being Champion at the first breed show in 1971. Many of his daughters have done well as brood mares or in the show ring and seven of his sons have been approved stallions. The two full brothers Brantshammar Korak and Brantshammar Bell Dara out of Keehaune Belle have been breed show Champions as well, and Korak has been awarded the Elite premium. One of Slieve Dara's notable daughters is Brantshammar Julie, herself the mother of three successful stallion sons (Rolls Royce, Juno Rory and Janus).

The five associations are Svenska Scoutforbundet (The Swedish Guide and Scout Association), SMU-Scout (The Guide and Scout of the Swedish Covenant Youth), KFUK-KFUMs Scoutforbund (The Swedish YWCA-YMCA Guide and Scout Association), Nykterhetsrrelsens Scoutf6rbund, The Temperance Guide and Scout Association), and Frjlsningsarm6ns Scoutf6rbund (The Salvation Army Guide and Scout Association). These associations have many camp sites that you can visit. Amongst in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo, there are Reception Teams to receive and help you with contacts in the country. Contact The Swedish Guide and Scout Council before you come to Sweden. Scouting in Sweden has a long history, Scouting for boys was started in 1908 by Emil Wingqvist. Another pioneer was a physical education teacher from Gothenburg, Eble Lieberath. He wanted to start some form Of Youth activity for his pupils and found Baden-Powell's book "Scouting for boys" whilst traveling. He later translated it into Swedish. Two years later activities were commenced for girls as well. In 1912 the first Boy Scout association was formed and in 1913 the first Girl Guide association Popular movements such as The Temperance Movement and Revival Movements were a very important part of Swedish society in those days. They fought for better spiritual and social conditions for theirs members. They were people who had united to create something better in the current society. It was therefor, natural that these already existing youth movements such as the Temperance Movement, the YWCA and the YMCA took up scouting and guiding as part of their program, as well -as other scout associations being formed.

Sweden as a Great Power in the 17th Century The 17th century saw Sweden as an European "Great Power" and one of the major military and political combatants on the continent during the Thirty Years' War. By mid-century, the kingdom included part of Norway, all of Finland and stretched into Russia. Sweden's control of portions of modern Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Germany made the Baltic Sea essentially a Swedish lake. Perhaps inspired by the riches other Great Powers gathered from their overseas colonies, Sweden too sought to extend its influence to the New World. In 1637, Swedish, Dutch and German stockholders formed the New Sweden Company to trade for furs and tobacco in North America. Under the command of Peter Minuit, the company's first expedition sailed from Sweden late in 1637 in two ships, Kalmar Nyckel and Fogel Grip. Minuit had been the governor of the Dutch colony, New Netherland, centered on Manhattan Island, from 1626 to 1631.
The ships reached Delaware Bay in March 1638, and the settlers began to build a fort at the site of present-day Wilmington, Delaware. They named it Fort Christina, in honor of Sweden's twelve-year-old queen. It was the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley.

Royalty in Sweden
Some of the history of the early kings of Sweden can be found in the English poem Beowulf , which was probably written in the seventh or eighth century AD, and sagas such as the Heimskringla , by 13th century Icelandic historian Snorri Sturluson. Lists of Swedish monarchs often start with the 10th century royal House of Yngling's King Erik the Victorious and his son Olaf Skotkonung (Olaf the Tax King). Sweden and Norway were united under the same monarch, King Magnus, in 1319. The son of a Swedish prince and a Norwegian princess, Magnus inherited both crowns when he was a small child. In 1397, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark formed the Kalmar Union under Margaret I, a Danish princess who had married King Magnus's son Haakon VI. Although her nephew Eric of Pomerania was the official king of all three countries, it was Margaret who ruled them until her death in 1412. Sweden dropped out of the Kalmar union in 1523 and elected its own king, Gustav I. The current Swedish royal family, the House of Bernadotte, is descended from a French commoner, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who was a marshal of

Hi, I am HÃ¥kan!
Strange enough the antic historians tell a story very similar to that about the Visigoths preceeding the battle of Adrianopolis,376 AD. Gutonians started to leave already before that! At the latest 700 B.C, they began to build ships in stone around the Baltic sea: In Aland(Finland east of Sweden), Kurland(Kurzeme-Latvia), Ösel(Saremaa-Estonia), you can find them. At this location a number of wars and battles from Swedish history will have their stories told. They will be changed regularly so come back often. They will be told in a chronoligical order. There are indeed many of them so all of them can of course not be included. The earliest will be from the end of the dark ages when Sweden struggled to get out of the Kalmarunion that bound Scandinavia into one royalunion. Sweden had entered the union volontarily but not all agreed that so should be the case. The majority of battles are from the period 1600 to 1660 when Sweden established herself as a great power in Europe and from 1660 to 1721 when she defended this status and her very existance from old bitter enemies and new growing powers.
