History
Written records in Sweden survive only from late in the Middle Ages. But the number and variety of fortifications, assembly places, votive sites and graves is impressive. Humankind and metallurgy made late appearances and only in the Bronze Age, after the arrival of Indo-Europeans, was there rich trade. The country's early cultural life is still vividly represented in the h¤llristningar (rock paintings) that survive in many parts of Sweden. In the M¤laren valley, the first known trading posts were established and monuments with runic inscriptions appeared. The Viking Age was getting under way by the 9th century, and vast repositories of Roman, Byzantine and Arab coins attest to the wealth and power Swedish Vikings accumulated over the next century. Vikings travelled mostly to the east, making their mark in Russia, as well as trading with (and pillaging) Byzantine territories. Pagan gods and slightly more earthbound kings held sway over the domestic population, with Christianity only taking root in the 11th century. Internal squabbles whiled away the bulk of the Middle Ages until Denmark interceded in 1397, when, together with Norway, they joined Sweden in the Union of Kalmar. A century of Swedish nationalist grumblings erupted in rebellion under Gustaf Vasa, who was crowned in 1523. Gustaf then set about introducing religious reform and a powerful centralised nation-state. A period of expansion resulted in Sweden's control over much of Finland and the Baltic countries.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... SWEDEN Sweden's history dates back to the 6th century. As disparate kingdoms, the peoples of Sweden participated in Viking raids that took place for hundreds of years. Though Christianity came to the region in the 9th century, it took another three hundred years for the religion to fully establish itself. For a time, the Swedish and Norwegian realms merged and in 1397, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway were united by Queen Margaret. In 1523, the Swedish aristocracy rose against the Danish and declared Swedish monarchy under Gustavus I. By 1604, Lutheranism had taken over and Catholicism was outlawed. Sweden participated in various European conflicts in the 17th and 18th centuries and it was not until 1905 that Sweden's modern borders were finally established. Long known for being politically neutral, Sweden continues to play an important role in Scandinavian and European affairs.

Sweden History
Sweden grew out of the oldest civilizations in Europe. Populated for more than 5,000 years, the region is perhaps best known for the Vikings, fierce fighters who visited parts of North America, Russia and the Middle East. Despite their reputation for mayhem, the Vikings spent more time exploring and setting up towns than raping and pillaging. Their time in the spotlight was relatively brief - lasting roughly from 800 to 1050 AD. As Viking influence waned in the 11th century, Olof Skotkonung became Sweden's first Christian king. The Christian influence later led to the formation of a united Scandinavian kingdom called Kalmar, but the members simply couldn't get along with one another. In 1520, the Danish king Christian II conquered Stockholm and beheaded most of the Swedish nobility in what became known as the "Stockholm Bloodbath." The Swedish response, led by Gustavus Vasa, overthrew the Danes and initiated a new royal dynasty. Gustavus Vasa became Gustav I, and Lutheranism became the state religion (mostly because Gustav I needed to confiscate the Catholic church's property to pay war debts). Sweden gained and then lost territory in Scandinavia and the Baltics through the wars of the 1600s and 1700s. After the Napoleonic Wars ended in 1814, Sweden ruled only itself and neighboring Norway, an uneasy union that dissolved peacefully in 1905.

[Upload image] During the seventh and eighth centuries the Swedes were merchant seamen well known for their far-reaching trade. In the ninth century Nordic Vikings raided and ravaged the European continent as far as the Black and Caspian Seas. During the 11th and 12th centuries Sweden gradually became a unified Christian kingdom that later included Finland. Queen Margaret of Denmark united all the Nordic lands in the "Kalmar Union" in 1397. Continual tension within the countries and within the union gradually led to open conflict between the Swedes and the Danes in the 15th century. The union's final disintegration in the early 16th century brought on a long-lived rivalry between Norway and Denmark on one side and Sweden and Finland on the other In the 16th century Gustav Vasa fought for an independent Sweden and crushed an attempt to restore the Kalmar Union and laid the foundation for modern Sweden. At the same time he broke with the Catholic Church and established the Reformation. During the 17th century after winning wars against Denmark Russia and Poland Sweden-Finland (with scarcely more than 1 million inhabitants) emerged as a great power. Its contributions during the Thirty Years War under Gustav II Adolf (Gustavus Adolphus) determined the political as well as the religious balance of power in Europe. By 1658 Sweden ruled several provinces of Denmark as well as what is now Finland Ingermanland (in which St. Petersburg is located) Estonia Latvia and important coastal towns and other areas of northern Germany.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: A military power during the 17th century, Sweden has not participated in any war in almost two centuries. An armed neutrality was preserved in both World Wars. Sweden's long-successful economic formula of a capitalist system interlarded with substantial welfare elements has recently been undermined by high unemployment, rising maintenance costs, and a declining position in world markets. Indecision over the country's role in the political and economic integration of Europe caused Sweden not to join the EU until 1995, and to forgo the introduction of the euro in 1999. 20. Sweden: History - A Part Of Randburg
History The Viking Age, 8001050, was characterised by a marked expansion, which in the case of Sweden was mainly directed eastwards.
http://www.randburg.com/sw/general/general_5.html
History
The Viking Age, 800-1050, was characterised by a marked expansion, which in the case of Sweden was mainly directed eastwards. The Vikings, active in the east, travelled as far as the Black and Caspian Seas, where they developed trading links with the Byzantine Empire and the Arab dominions. At the same time, Christianity first reached Sweden with the mission of Ansgar, who visited the country from the Carolingian Empire in the ninth century. Sweden's expansion in the east continued during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries through the incorporation of Finland into the Swedish kingdom after several crusades. After its defeat in the Great Northern War (1700-21) against the combined forces of Denmark, Poland and Russia, Sweden lost most of its provinces on the other side of the Baltic and was reduced to largely the same frontiers as present day Sweden and Finland. During the Napoleonic Wars, Finland was finally surrendered to Russia and Sweden's last possessions in northern Germany were also lost. As compensation for these losses, the French marshal Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, who had been elected heir to the Swedish throne in 1810, succeeded in obtaining Norway, which was forced into a union with Sweden in 1814. This union was peacefully dissolved in 1905 after many internal disputes. Nineteenth-century Sweden was also marked by the emergence of strong popular movements like the free churches, the temperance and feminist movements and, above all, the labour movement. The latter, which grew in pace with industrialisation in the second half of the nineteenth century, was reformative in outlook after the turn of the century and the first representatives of social democracy entered the government as early as 1917. Universal suffrage was introduced for men in 1909 and for women in 1921, and this latter date also marked the breakthrough for the principle of parliamentary government. Plans for a welfare society were laid during the 1930s after the Social Democrats had become the governing party, and it proved possible to put these plans into effect in all essentials after the Second World War.
