Sweden to send more troops to Afghanistan
The Government decided today to make a new military contribution to the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan (ISAF). This came after yesterdays Riksdag decision granting the Government permission to send another such force. Everyone who supports this decision knows that the mission is full of risks. But the situation for the civilian population is so serious that the rest of the world must provide support by means of military troops in order to increase security.

The Swedish Government Offices and the EU
Overall responsibility for Swedens EU policy lies with the Prime Minister. Other government ministers are responsible for their respective policy areas in EU work and represent Sweden at the various meetings of the Council of Ministers. As in the case of all other issues it deals with, however, the Government is collectively responsible for EU policy decisions. The Prime Ministers State Secretary and the EU Policy Coordination Unit at the Prime Ministers Office are responsible for the management and coordination of EU-related activities at the Government Offices. The duties of the Prime Ministers Office in this respect include:
    • Setting inter-ministerial priorities and formulating policy with regard to EU issues Heading the government think-tank on the long-term development of the Union Resolving inter-ministerial points of contention and promoting cohesive policy approaches in Swedens EU work Preparing for meetings of the European Council (EU summits)
    The role of the ministries
The Department for European Union Affairs at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs helps the Prime Ministers Office with the day-to-day tasks of coordinating Swedens work on EU issues and processes, of preparing for EU summits and of considering the EUs long-term development and reform.

    recent immigrants at school
Young people who have recently immigrated to Sweden have the same dreams and hopes for the future as young ethnic Swedes. However schools have low expectations of them. The study "Invisible dreams of the future?" from the Swedish National Institute for Working Life shows that students' ambitions exceed their teachers' expectations.
