Sweden's government: Socialist
Swedes look to their Sweden government to provide jobs, health care, and more.
The most important thing to me is to open up the welfare system to more people Those of us who are well off must stop complaining about taxes. Can you imagine an American politician saying that, even if that was what he was thinking? Probably not, but Lars Engqvist, Swedens Minister for Health and Social Affairs, says it loud and proud on the Swedish Governments website, and most Swedes probably wouldnt want it any other way. bodyOffer(25419) Sweden is a constitutional monarchy. Technically, the King (or Queen) is head of state, but his only duties are ceremonial and he has no control over public policy. Sweden has a Prime Minister and 19 other Ministers. Its parliament is called the Riksdag. In the United States, there was furious debate over government funding of the National Endowment for the Arts, but in Sweden, there is a Ministry of Culture that promotes cultural heritage, radio and television, press and periodicals, and even ecclesiastical matters. As it did in many other countries, the labor movement became very powerful in Sweden in the late1800s. The first social democrats were elected in 1917, and after World War II, a purely Social Democratic government was introduced under the leadership of Per Albin Hanson. Other influential socialist prime ministers over the years have included Tage Erlander and Olof Palme, who was assasinated in 1986. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, industrial production fell, unemployment skyrocketed, and the national debt grew at an alarming rate. Many economists blamed a bloated welfare system that seemed out of control.

Government of Sweden
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Sweden The Kingdom of Sweden (Konungariket Sverige in Swedish) is a Nordic country in Scandinavia, in Northern Europe. It is bordered by Norway on the west, Finland on the northeast, the Skagerrak and the Kattegat on the southwest, and the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia on the east. Due to the relatively small number of inhabitants, Sweden's landscape is known for its peace and the large forests and mountainous wilderness.

Modern constitutional monarchies usually implement the concept of trias politica, and have the monarch as the (symbolic) head of the executive branch . Today, constitutional monarchy is almost always combined with representative democracy, and represents a compromise between theories of sovereignty which place sovereignty in the hands of the people, and those that see a role for tradition in the theory of government. Though the king or queen may be regarded as the government's symbolic head, it is the Prime Minister, whose power derives directly or indirectly from elections, who actually governs the country.

Country Info Sweden Introduction Sweden General Data Sweden Maps Sweden Culture ... Sweden Time and Date Sweden Government Back to Top Popular government in Sweden rests upon ancient tradition. The Swedish parliament (Riksdag) stems from tribal courts (Ting) and the election of kings in the Viking age. It became a permanent institution in the 15th century. Sweden's government is a limited constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. Executive authority is vested in the cabinet, which consists of a prime minister and 20 ministers who run the government departments. The present Social Democratic government, led by Prime Minister Göran Persson, came to power in 1994 after losing power briefly in 1991. King Carl XVI Gustaf (Bernadotte) ascended to the throne on September 15, 1973. His authority is formal, symbolic, and representational. The unicameral Riksdag has 349 members, popularly elected every 4 years and is in session generally from September through mid-June. Sweden is divided into 21 counties and 289 municipalities. Each county (län) is headed by a governor, who is appointed by the central government. Each county has a popularly elected council with the power of taxation, and each council has particular responsibility for education, public transportation, health, and medical care. Elected municipal councils are headed by executive committees roughly analogous to the boards of commissioners found in some U.S. cities. Swedish law, drawing on Germanic, Roman, and Anglo-American law, is neither as codified as in France and other countries influenced by the Napoleonic Code, nor as dependent on judicial practice and precedents as in the United States. Legislative and judicial institutions include, in addition to the Riksdag, the Supreme Court, the Supreme Administrative Court, the Labor Court, Commissions of Inquiry, the Law Council, District Courts and Courts of Appeal, the Chief Public Prosecutor, the Bar Association, and ombudsmen who oversee the application of laws with particular attention to abuses of authority.

Sweden's long-successful economic formula of a capitalist system interlarded with substantial welfare elements has recently been undermined by high unemployment, rising maintenance costs, and a declining position in world markets. Indecision over the country's role in the political and economic integration of Europe caused Sweden not to join the EU until 1995, and to forgo the introduction of the euro in 1999. more country information General: National Institutions: Embassies: Political Parties: Political and General Information: For the most comprehensive listing of government resources see:

    Government plans harsher anti-immigrant laws
Thirteen refugees were found dead, and fifteen almost dead, on a boat outside Italy’s coast on Sunday 19 October.
    Per-Åke Westerlund
The survivors said that more than 50 people had died during the trip and had been dumped overboard. The European Union’s (EU) response to these tragedies at its borders is to raise the wall keeping out refugees even higher. Harmonisation of migration is at the top of the agenda for European Union governments. New rules and laws are under preparation. The UNHCR, the refugee agency of the UN, Amnesty International and the International Red Cross are among the critics of the proposals. The Swedish government, on the other hand, has given full support and plan their own tightening of the conditions for asylum seekers. This harmonisation includes agreements with “safe third countries” to which refugees can be deported. Another shortlist of safe origin countries will decide those countries which refugees will always be sent back to. In 2004, the EU will set up a new agency for border control. It will support the training of border guards and give advice on how to deport illegal migrants to a third, non-EU country.
