THE DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION
Keith Montgomery

Department of Geography and Geology
The "Demographic Transition" is a model that describes population change over time. It is based on an interpretation begun in 1929 by the American demographer Warren Thompson, of the observed changes, or transitions , in birth and death rates in industrialized societies over the past two hundred years or so. By "model" we mean that it is an idealized, composite picture of population change in these countries. The model is a generalization that applies to these countries as a group and may not accurately describe all individual cases. Whether or not it applies to less developed societies today remains to be seen. Before proceeding you should review some demographic terminology or be sure to follow the links given below as the terms arise The model is illustrated below: As shown, there are four stages of transition. They will be described first in terms of a typical fully developed country today, such as The United States or Canada, the countries of Europe, or similar societies elsewhere (e.g. Japan, Australia etc.). STAGE ONE is associated with pre Modern times, and is characterized by a balance between

The Vikings originally came from Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Norway is the most western land of Scandinavia with a land area of 324,220 sq km. Only 3% of the land is fertile, the coastline is deeply cut by fjords and mountains, some covered with large glaciers cover more than half the land mass. It is very long and narrow (500 km lies north of the Arctic Circle) and shares borders with Finland, Sweden and Russia. Norway's west coast is scattered with small islands. See map of Viking settlements in Norway and Sweden.
To read about a Viking settlement in Norway, click on the graphic. Denmark The most southerly country of Scandinavia, Denmark is small with a land area of 42,930 sq km. It consists of about 500 islands, only 100 of which are inhabited. Apart from a small border with Germany, it is surrounded by the North and Baltic seas. It is a flat and fertile land. Casting about for a broad social science field that had ample room for humanistic concerns, I stumbled into the geography program, little realizing the effect it would have on my future. I gradually weaned myself from arcana, learning solid positivistic methods, and concentrating on urban historical issues. Along the way, I picked up one term's worth of Swedish, the better to be able to read Torsten H"gerstrand's recent works (at my advisor's suggestion).

    DRIVING IN SWEDEN
    Speed Limits

Speed Limits are posted everywhere. They are medium size red circles with a yellow background and black numbers.
    For example:
If you speed in Sweden, you risk a heavy fine and maybe even losing your driving license. Sweden is 54% forest, so there are a lot of "Animal" warning signs posted. These signs must be taken seriously. You should be extra careful when driving around sunset and dawn.
    Alcohol
Even very small amounts of alcohol can affect your driving ability. Sweden has a very strict law that entitles the Police to give a Breathalyzer test, even if there is no reason to suspect that you are driving under the influence of alcohol. If your blood level alcohol content is 0.2 promille or the content of alcohol in your exhaled breath is 0.10mg/l or more, this will result in a stiff fine, a prison sentence or both. You will also lose your driving license. Alcohol also remains in your system the day after you drink it. Do Not Drink and Drive
    Seat Belts

Whenever you are sitting in a car, you must use a seat belt. Children under the age of seven must sit in a child safety seat. All other children must use a seatbelt. It is forbidden to use a back facing Child safety seat in a car that has a passenger side airbag.
    Headlights
It is the Law in Sweden that you have to be seen when you are driving. All vehicles must drive with at least dimmed headlights, always day and night.

    Flags
Sweden's flag was adopted on June 22, 1906, but its design is hundreds of years old (it probably dates from 1521). The Swedish flag is blue with a golden-yellow Scandinavian cross. The colors are derived from the Swedish national arms and the design is from the Danish flag. Flag Day in Sweden is celebrated each year on June 6. On this date in 1523, King Gustav I Vasa began his reign (and Sweden was no longer under the control of Denmark), and in 1809, Sweden's new constitution was adopted.
