    Historical Geography and Landscape Studies
For a number of years the corner-stone of research at the Department of Human Geography in Stockholm has been that into pre-industrial rural landscapes. When David Hannerberg was called to the chair at Stockholm in 1956 he laid the foundation of the modern approach to retrogressive landscape history. His successors, Professors Staffan Helmfrid, Ulf Sporrong and Mats Widgren have continued to develop this line of research. The wealth of detail found in the cadastral maps of the 17th and 18th centuries was originally the main source of material for this research, but field methods have subsequently been used to an increasing extent. By these means the chronological framework of the studies has been widened to cover prehistoric periods.
The research within this field now covers a wide range of problems and geographical areas. A research programme on property rights and the landscape was launched in the 1980s and has resulted in works on the subdivision of fields, inheritance systems in different parts of Sweden and Finland, the influence of big landowners and recently on commons as institutions. Much research and development has also been carried out at the interface between applied landscape management and research work. The use of old cadastral maps for planning purposes and the integration of landscape history into computerized systems of landscape analysis are also themes within this framework. Landscape history in Eastern and Southern Africa is another growing sector of research, carried out in co-operation with the theme

    Geography
Sweden is a long narrow country. In Europe, only Russia, Ukraine, France and Spain are larger than Sweden in terms of area. The distance from north to south is almost 1600 kilometres, which is equivalent to the distance from Malmö to Rome or from New York to Minneapolis. Sweden shares borders with Norway and Finland and since 1 July 2000 has also come closer to Denmark and the European continent through the opening of the Öresund bridge to traffic between Malmö and Copenhagen.
Sweden's geography is characterised by its long coastline, immensely beautiful countryside, dense forests, myriad lakes and extensive mountainous areas. More than half of Sweden's surface area is covered by forest - mainly coniferous with a rich fauna. Approximately 100 000 inland lakes enrich the countryside. Off the long coasts on the Baltic to the east and the North Sea to the west are tens of thousands of archipelago islands.
    Natural heritage
To protect the countryside and conserve parts of its natural heritage for future generations, Sweden has set aside land for 26 national parks and nature reserves. Sweden's first national parks were established in 1909 and were the first in Europe. National parks are known for their beauty, they are unique environments offering enriching experiences of nature. An important aim of Sweden's nature conservation policy is to offer people an opportunity to get out into the woods and fields. Print This Frame Sweden Introduction Top of Page Background: A military power during the 17th century, Sweden has not participated in any war in almost two centuries. An armed neutrality was preserved in both World Wars. Sweden's long-successful economic formula of a capitalist system interlarded with substantial welfare elements has recently been undermined by high unemployment, rising maintenance costs, and a declining position in world markets. Indecision over the country's role in the political and economic integration of Europe caused Sweden not to join the EU until 1995, and to forgo the introduction of the euro in 1999.
