Environmental Consultant Lars Jederlund examines how the concept of "producer responsibility" and recycling works in Sweden
Both small steps and large leaps are needed to modernize environmental efforts and to achieve an ecologically sustainable society. In the near future refuse dumps will be replaced by collection, sorting, and recovery of waste products, and by "reverse factories". A means of realizing this is the introduction of "producer responsibility" for used and outworn products. Since 1994, producers in Sweden have been obligated to collect used packaging, waste paper, and worn-out tires. Now this producer responsibility is being expanded to a number of new products.
In order to achieve the far-reaching environmental goal of sustainable development, the flow of goods must be adapted to recycling. Therefore, the government's Recycling Delegation has indicated its ambition that recovery and reuse of material is to have largely replaced dumping and combustion of mixed wastes within 25 to 50 years. The time of the garbage dump is gone.

A military power during the 17th century, Sweden has not participated in any war in almost two centuries. An armed neutrality was preserved in both World Wars.
Sweden's long-successful economic formula of a capitalist system interlarded with substantial welfare elements has recently been undermined by high unemployment, rising maintenance costs, and a declining position in world markets.
Indecision over the country's role in the political and economic integration of Europe caused Sweden not to join the EU until 1995, and to forgo the introduction of the euro in 1999. http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/history/mnstatehistory/swedish_migration.html
Swedish Immigration Extensive Swedish migration to the present-day state of Minnesota has taken place throughout the middle of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Several factors have encouraged emigration of Swedes from their homeland and to choose Minnesota as their new home. Why did they leave? The reasons why people left Sweden for homes elsewhere are called "push" factors. These factors are varied and often work in conjunction with the "pull" factors (reasons to migrate to particular area) of a certain part of the world, such as Minnesota. One reason people left Sweden was due to a lack of available land. By the mid-1800s, the population of Sweden was on the rise due to improvements in modern medicine and a more stable food supply. This increase in population led to a strain on the amount of land available, especially for farming, forcing many Swedes to leave their homeland and to search for land in other countries. Religious persecution was another factor that pushed Swedes to leave their homeland. The government of Sweden was connected to the State Lutheran Church, and, until 1858, people who practiced another religion faced being fined, put in jail, or exiled from the country. Even though these practices stopped in 1858, many Swedes continued to be intolerant of their fellow countrymen and -women who practiced a religion other than that of the state. Because of this, many Swedes left Sweden between 1840 and 1860. Some people chose to leave Sweden because of the mandatory military service required by the government. Young men in 1860, for example, were required to train in the Swedish military for 30 days out of the year. By 1900, this time increased to 240 days. Some young men decided to leave the country rather than to face this conscription.

But the number and variety of fortifications, assembly places, votive sites and graves is impressive. The Viking Age was getting under way by the 9th century, and vast repositories of Roman, Byzantine and Arab coins attest to the wealth and power Swedish Vikings accumulated over the next century. Vikings travelled mostly to the east, making their mark in Russia, as well as trading with (and pillaging) Byzantine territories.

Culture of Sweden
Swedish 20th century culture is noted by pioneering works in the early days of cinema, with Mauritz Stiller and Victor Sj¶str¶m. Later on, moguls like Ingmar Bergman and actresses such as Greta Garbo Ingrid Bergman and Anita Ekberg made careers abroad. Swedish music is in many minds connected with ABBA , although more recently indie bands like Soundtrack of our lives and The Hives have started achieving international fame. Swedish literature is also vibrant and active, Sweden ranking third in the list of countries with most Nobel Prize laureates in literature Inhaltsverzeichnis 1 Language Related Institutions

Culture of Sweden -
Travel to Sweden with
Voigt Travel The best known members of Sweden's artistic community have been writers: chiefly the influential dramatist and author August Strindberg and the widely translated children's writer Astrid Lindgren, creator of Pippi Longstocking. The Gustavian balladry of Carl Michael Bellman, rarely heard outside Scandinavia, speaks directly to the Swedish soul. Vilhelm Moberg, a representative of 20th century proletarian literature, won international acclaim with The Immigrants and The Emigrants. Carl von Linné was an 18th century scientist who made pioneering field studies of plant species using Latin names. Still better known is Alfred Nobel, first patron of the Nobel Institute and the coveted international prizes. Swedish is a Germanic language, belonging to the Nordic branch, and is spoken throughout Sweden and in parts of Finland. Swedes, Danes and Norwegians can, however, make themselves mutually understood since their languages are similar. Most Swedes speak English as a second language, so lazy tongues can get away without wrapping themselves round those Swedish vowels. Sweden has a Lutheran state church, which all citizens in principle join (in fact about 95% of citizens are members). The state, however, guarantees religious freedom. Hungry Swedes tuck into fish which is usually poached or fried in lard. Pickled herring is especially popular and the potato is basically indispensable. As well as being the vegetable of ubiquity, spuds are critically important in the production of excellent Swedish aquavit. Strong beer, wines and spirits are sold by the state monopoly Systembolaget at outlets in the cities and towns, which are open weekdays. You must normally decide what you want from price lists and displays and then take a number and wait: Friday afternoon queues can be long.
