Culture
The best known members of Sweden's artistic community have been writers: chiefly the influential dramatist and author August Strindberg and the widely translated children's writer Astrid Lindgren, creator of Pippi Longstocking. The Gustavian balladry of Carl Michael Bellman, rarely heard outside Scandinavia, speaks directly to the Swedish soul. Vilhelm Moberg, a representative of 20th century proletarian literature, won international acclaim with The Immigrants and The Emigrants . Carl von Linn© was an 18th century scientist who made pioneering field studies of plant species using Latin names. Still better known is Alfred Nobel, first patron of the Nobel Institute and the coveted international prizes. Swedish is a Germanic language, belonging to the Nordic branch, and is spoken throughout Sweden and in parts of Finland. Swedes, Danes and Norwegians can, however, make themselves mutually understood since their languages are similar. Most Swedes speak English as a second language, so lazy tongues can get away without wrapping themselves round those Swedish vowels. The Church of Sweeden was a state church in which all citizens in principle joined. During this time the government maintained freedom of religion but nevertheless separated church and state in 1999. Hungry Swedes tuck into fish which is usually poached or fried in lard. Pickled herring is especially popular and the potato is basically indispensable. As well as being

Country Info Sweden Introduction Sweden General Data Sweden Maps Sweden Culture ... Sweden Time and Date Sweden Culture Back to Top The genuine rural folk traditions are disappearing with increasing settlement in urban areas. Among those still vital in Gotland, Dalarna, and various other areas are special national costumes, dances, folk music, and the like, and many traditions are retained even in urban settlements. Spring is celebrated on the last night of April with bonfires and song across the country. This is a great students' festival in university towns, such as Uppsala and Lund. The bright Midsummer Eve is celebrated around June 24, about the time of the year's longest day; in the ceremony a large pole, decorated with flowers and leaves, is placed into the ground. Some celebrations have a religious association: Advent, St. Lucia's Day, Christmas, Easter, and Whitsuntide. Pagan elements are still sometimes evident in these holiday ceremonies. Sweden has developed a modern industrial culture based on natural resources, technical skills, and a sense of quality. The people have tended to maintain provincial traditions and customs because of the isolated location of the country. Swedish society and life are characterized by simplicity and even severity resulting from geographic and economic conditions. Over the centuries, however, Swedish traders have returned with ideas and products that have been assimilated into Swedish culture. In the 18th century French influence was especially important in modifying Swedish culture.

Sweden History
Sweden grew out of the oldest civilizations in Europe. Populated for more than 5,000 years, the region is perhaps best known for the Vikings, fierce fighters who visited parts of North America, Russia and the Middle East. Despite their reputation for mayhem, the Vikings spent more time exploring and setting up towns than raping and pillaging. Their time in the spotlight was relatively brief - lasting roughly from 800 to 1050 AD. As Viking influence waned in the 11th century, Olof Skotkonung became Sweden's first Christian king. The Christian influence later led to the formation of a united Scandinavian kingdom called Kalmar, but the members simply couldn't get along with one another. In 1520, the Danish king Christian II conquered Stockholm and beheaded most of the Swedish nobility in what became known as the "Stockholm Bloodbath." The Swedish response, led by Gustavus Vasa, overthrew the Danes and initiated a new royal dynasty. Gustavus Vasa became Gustav I, and Lutheranism became the state religion (mostly because Gustav I needed to confiscate the Catholic church's property to pay war debts). Sweden gained and then lost territory in Scandinavia and the Baltics through the wars of the 1600s and 1700s. After the Napoleonic Wars ended in 1814, Sweden ruled only itself and neighboring Norway, an uneasy union that dissolved peacefully in 1905.

Stockholm
'Beauty on Water' or 'Venice of the North' - these phrases sum up the Baltic allure of a city built on 14 islands in an archipelago of some 24,000. Founded by Birger Jarl in 1252, Stockholm owes its existence to water.
Gamla Stan, situated on the island of Stadsholmen, is Stockholm's old town, which emerged in the 13th century. Its medieval streets are linked by a fantasy of lanes, arches and stairways. East of the city, the larger island of Djurgården offers wonderful parklands and a concentration of fine museums. One not to miss is Skansen, the world's first open-air museum, where exhibits from all over Sweden give it a rural feel. Skansen also includes a zoo, aquarium, forestry pavilion and a tobacco museum.
Yukkasjärvi The small northern village of Jukkasjärvi has received international reknown for its sculpted Ice Hotel, constructed from tonnes of snow and ice from the Torne River. It is rebuilt every winter after the summer thaw but attracts a number of tourists eager to experience the 'ice beds' and drinks from the Absolut Icebar. About a kilometer from the Icehotel is the old wooden Sami church of Jukkasjärvi built in 1608. Inside the church is a richly decorated altarpiece by Bror Hjort which tells the story of the (forceful) conversion of the local Sami people to Christianity.

Sweden has a long tradition of research and innovation. Carlos Linnaeus, J. J. Berzelius, and C. W Scheele were just a few of the scientific giants of the 18th century. One of the foremost scientists and innovators of the 19th century was Alfred Nobel, whose legacy is the Nobel Prize. Thus, Sweden has become a world leader in two of the technology areas most likely to shape the 21st century: wireless technologies and biotechnology. A foreign direct investment boom in Sweden since the mid 1990's is the external recognition of Sweden's position within these important global growth sectors. Sweden's success as an innovative nation stands on a number of pillars, including a stable political context and sound macroeconomic policies. In addition, since the 1990s, Sweden has engaged in a number of activities to improve the microeconomic climate. A more dynamic competitive environment has emerged through the deregulation of telecom, transportation, energy and media infrastructure, privatization schemes and the opening of financial and currency markets. Improvements in the intensity of local competition, availability of venture capital, company innovativeness and quality of scientific and engineering talent, have contributed to strengthen the position.
