Geography of Swaziland
(Latitude: 31 degrees, 30 minutes East of Greenwich. longitude: 26 Degrees, 30 minutes south of the Equator. )
Swaziland, which is between the Republic of South Africa and Mozambique, is the smallest country if the Southern Hemisphere comprising an area of just over 17,000 square kilometres.
It is geographically unique with ancient rock formations and four distinct areas, each with its own climate and characteristics. Altitudes vary from 400 to 1600 metres above sea level.
The mountainous Highveld region to the north west has a temperate climate with hot, wet summers and dry winters when the temperature rises during the day but with cold nights.
The adjacent Middleveld has a warm climate and it is here that much of the country's agriculture occurs.
Further to the east lies the sub-tropical lowveld where two major export crops, sugar and citrus, are cultivated and where cattle farming is also carried out. The typical African bush of this region is home to a diversity of wild life and indigenous flora.
The Lubombo region adjacent to Mozambique is also sub-tropical.

    The Royal Kingdom of Swaziland
Swaziland is a landlocked country that shares borders with Mozambique (105 km) and South Africa (430 km). It was founded by Bantu peoples from Mozambique in the 18th century and became a British protectorate when colonial rule was established in 1903. Swaziland was led to independence by Sobhuza II in 1968, and is now a dual monarchy with a King (currently King Mswati III since April 25, 1986) and Queen Mother. There are four distinct areas in Swaziland, varying from 400 to 1800 metres above sea level, each with its own climate and characteristics varying from tropical to near temperate. The economy is based on subsistence agriculture, which occupies more than 60% of the population and contributes nearly 25% to GDP. Manufacturing accounts for another quarter of GDP. Mining has declined in importance in recent years; high-grade iron ore deposits were depleted in 1978, and health concerns cut world demand for asbestos. Exports of sugar and forestry products are the main earners of hard currency. The country is heavily dependent on South Africa, from which it receives 90% of its imports and to which it sends about half of its exports. The population of Swaziland is approximately 950,000 people. English (in which government business is conducted) and Siswati are the official languages. Sixty-seven percent of the population age 15 and over can read and write.
