Vol 3 Issue 1, Feb, 2003: A Plea for Human Rights in Swaziland
Philemon Lukhele
An act of backwardness and criminality that cannot be justified through any social phenomena be it cultural, religious or royal institutions, has befallen three young women in Swaziland; one believed to be 15 years another believed to be 18 years and the third's age not confirmed. I want to address the dynamics of this angering issue, of abduction, both as a Swazi and also as a human being. This is not the first time the King has committed such crimes and in the past he has done so because the parents of the girls have been complacent on the issue partly because when your daughter marries the King it means more economic wealth and status, and because the institution of the monarchy through its oppressive and coercive nature has instilled fear to the hearts of the Swazi people.
At whose financial cost is the King doing this? We as young Swazis are denied chances of schooling because of unaffordable education, yet the taxes of our parents are meant to feed the kids and wives of the King. Swaziland is a small nation, a quarter of which is HIV/AIDS infected due to literacy and lack of health infrastructure, yet we have the head of state committed to creating an empire at the expense of an already economically bleeding nation.

Local culture is show biz
By James Hall
sibhacca
Everyone gets into the act. Two elderly women, who are the grandmothers of the village, assume places beneath a tree to one side of the stage to watch the proceedings. Young ladies form a chorus and combine their voices with the men to improvise songs for the moment. The lyrics are only a line or two, repeated with tight but changing harmonies.
After the performance, the entertainers put on a show of another kind: they display the ordinary Swazi life that so fascinates and enchants visitors. Women cook and brew beer. The young men do construction work on the huts.

SWAZILAND The Swazi people is a Bantu speaking community predominantly from the Ngunis. They are originally from the East Central Africa who settled in the southern Tongaland while expanding southwards after crossing the Limpopo river in the 15th century. After many years the clan moved towards the Pongola river area. Later on, shortage of land and economic pressures brought two groups (Ngunis and Ndwandwe) to blows. After the battle the Swazi's retreated to what is today the central Swaziland. Actually Swaziland has a population of approximately 1 Million habitants and a area of 17.360 sq.Km, with a bicameral parliament consisting of 65 members (55 elected by secret ballot and 10 appointed by the king). The main reason why you will visit Swaziland is the kingdom tradition and the culture of its people. We will not take you there to stay in a luxury apartment of a chain of hotels. Swaziland is a small country, yet very big in African traditions and wilderness. Our tours to Swaziland are concentrated on the Swati costumes and the history of the country and its nature. HOW TO GET THERE The road is the most used and frequent way to get to Swaziland. Regular flights link most important towns in the region and Matsapha in Swaziland. The working hours of the most popular borders are as follows:

Limping into the African Renaissance
"Stop what you are doing! In Swaziland we are afraid of this" Steven Cohen
is told during his Queer Performance Art in Swaziland. ccording to President Thabo Mbeki, this millennium stood on the verge of the African Renaissance. I thought about that a lot in planning a New Year's Eve performance art work. I have so little connection to tradition and custom, to ancestors and worship, to sangomas and to the soil itself, that I feel like a person in Africa more than like an African. That's very untrendy for a wendy to confess, but honesty says fuck you! to expected lies. I actually feel like a white queer limping into the African Renaissance… with much foreboding. I expressed that in two works made this New Year in a traditional homestead in eSigangeni, Swaziland, my adopted other home with the family of my African granny Nomsa Dhlamini. I've always believed in shitting on my own doorstep, as well as on yours. It was a wild New Year, made much more so by queer issues raised by my performance art. I got called a magician, a champion, but mostly

civreport

Linda Moscarella reports on the various states of
democracy in Swaziland, South Africa, and Angola.
I travelled to Southern Africa for three weeks this winter to conduct several programs in participatory democracy and civic education under the auspices of the U.S. Information Agency. This trip, as well as the CIVITAS Africa conference being held in Pretoria this month, are part of an effort to strengthen emerging democracies or provide an opening wedge where democracy is not yet emerging. In each country I saw examples of both participatory pro blem-solving and authoritarian styles of governance. I saw indigenous forms of democracy and adaptations of Western systems. Swaziland
I was invited to be a presenter at an NGO conference on strengthening civil society and democratic participation in the Kingdom of Swaziland. Other than a small border with Mozambique, this tiny country is entirely surrounded by South Africa. The Swazis live in almost magical protection in their mountainous, peaceful, culturally homogeneous, and relatively prosperous kingdom, but they lack a constitution and any guarantee of human rights. I worked with the conference organizersan umbrella group of NGOs who ranged from aid organizations to activist unions and civil rights groupsto shape the agenda by e-mail for several months before the conference. This was done through the USIS office in the capital Mbabane, and the planning process was, in itself, a n exercise in practicing participatory democracy.

Exploring Contemporary Africa: Lessons on South Africa
In July of 2001, fifteen teachers from across the Pacific Northwest traveled to South Africa and Swaziland as part of a Fulbright Study Abroad Program to study the cultures and societies of southern Africa. Their mission was to gather first-hand information and resources for teaching about contemporary, post-apartheid southern Africa in the classroom. Based on their travels, the group produced a collection of lesson plans and resources adaptable to a broad range of classroom subjects and grade levels. Exploring Contemporary Africa contains personal stories, interviews and anecdotes on life in post-apartheid southern Africa, focusing on economics, education, government and society. South Africa moves from its earliest stages of village life to a highly technological and sophisticated civilization. The lesson will examine the transitions and changes throughout southern Africa and develop studentís curiosity in critically examining the complexities of Africa.

By Richard M. Patricks, SNTC. July 2000. MATSEBULA, J. S. M., "A History of Swaziland" - 3 editions: 1972, 1976 and 1988.
Still the only full length book that covers Swazi history from the earliest times to the present. Matsebula (Chief Executive Officer of the SNTC for 20 years) deserves praise as the only person, Swazi or non-Swazi, who has attempted a complete Swazi history. Available at Webster's Bookshops, Mbabane and Manzini, and other bookshops. Books below may be found at Websters, but usually need to be ordered BONNER, Philip: "Kings, Concessionaires and Commoners" 1983, Cambridge.
Written by a Wits professor, the book examines Swazi history 1800-1889, or the reigns of Sobhuza I (Somhlolo), Mswati II and Mbandzeni. The last chapter is a summary of the book. KUPER Hilda, "The Swazi" 1963
By a social anthropologist, this is condensation of her earlier works like "African Aristocracy" (1947) and others. Chapter One gives history. KUPER, Hilda, "A Biography of King Sobhuza II" 1976
This is the official biography, commissioned by King Sobhuza himself, but it is equally a history of Swaziland in the 20th century. Most chapters are very readable: here Kuper writes more in the style of a novelist then an anthropologist.
