Main article: History of Swaziland Although remains of human settlements of more than 100,000 years ago have been found in Swaziland, the current Swazi population migrated there eventually in the 19th century . At the same time, the first whites started to settle in the area. A convention secured independence for the Swazi nation, but in practice this was not the case. After the Boer Wars , Swaziland effectively became a British colony. The country was eventually granted independence on September 6 . Since then, Swaziland has seen a struggle between pro-democracy activists and the totalitarian monarchy.

In 2001 the annual population growth rate was estimated at 1.8 percent. The capital and principal town is Mbabane (population, 1986, 38,290). Lobamba is the traditional royal capital. Some 35 percent of the population lives in urban areas. The Swazi nation is an amalgamation of more than 70 clans. Their chiefs form the traditional hierarchy under the ngwenyama and ndlovukazi, who are of the largest clan, the Dlamini. The amalgamation brought together clans already living in the area that is now Swaziland, many of whom were of Sotho origin, and clans of Nguni origin who entered the country with the Dlamini in the early 19th century. Traditional administration and culture are regulated by an uncodified Swazi Law and Custom, which is recognized both constitutionally and judicially. The language is siSwati, which is akin to Zulu, though it shares official status with English, which is in fact used generally for official written communication.

E-Mail: paiki@uniswacc.uniswa.sz or pmuswazi@yahoo.com ** Cataloguer, University of Swaziland Libraries, P. Bag 4, Kwaluseni, M201, Swaziland. E- Mail: rosef@uniswacc.uniswa.sz or rmagagula@hotmail.com [Web edited by Kenneth Wilburn; hard copy format adapted to facilitate online reading.] Introduction Historically, Africa has experienced social, political, economic and cultural upheavals. The effects of colonialism and increased interaction between different African communities themselves have been profound, with far reaching implications on the cultural cohesion of the constituent nations. Following the attainment of independence and increasing globalization, African nations struggle to retain their original cultural identities. However, numerous commentators have singled out the unique experiences of Swaziland, especially the resilience with which the originality of its culture has survived and co - existed with alien cultural influences. Nyekos(1) 1982 observation that Swaziland has tended to retain and cherish many of its pre-European traditions is a recurring comment in many works and fora. Understandably, Swazi culture has attracted scholarly attention resulting in considerable documentation. In addition, attempts at identifying and compiling a bibliographic record relating to this documentation have also been made. Nyeko(2), Jiyane(3)

by Jan Arild Teland and May Tina Teland Abstract After leaving Hazyview we drove down to Swaziland where we stayed at the Swazi Cultural Village in the Ezulwini Valley, not so far from the capital Mbabane. Having been introduced to the Swazi culture, we exited Swaziland and entered the Zulu region of South Africa. Here we visited a Zulu Village and went on another exiting game drive in the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park. Day 7 - July 3 We really got some rest this day, as we didn't have to get up before 0700! (that's only 30 minutes earlier than on a normal workday what a relaxing holiday!) Kurt had made us a large breakfast with bacon and scrambled eggs, so we took our time eating and were only ready to leave at 0830. We drove through some very nice and varied scenery, including banana plantations, high mountains and areas covered with forest. Stopping only once to do some shopping, we arrived at Jeppe's Reef, the Swaziland border, at 1200. The formalities went smoothly and soon we were inside the kingdom of Swaziland. Swaziland is a very small country, almost completely surrounded by South Africa. It has a population of approximately 860,000. The Swazis are descendent from a group that originally moved down from Eastern Africa and settled in the area where Maputo (Mozambique) is today. However, they came under pressure from other clans, and moved further down to what is now the south of Swaziland.
