CULTURE-AFRICA: Attempts Made to Outlaw Dangerous Superstitions Inter Press Service - April 18, 2002
James Hall MBABANE, Swaziland , Apr 18 (IPS) - In the wake of a decision by soccer officials at this year's African Cup of Nations championship to banish spell-casting witchdoctors from the football pitch during games, police departments throughout Southern Africa have taken steps to curb superstitious practices that are more dangerous than amusing. "If a Swazi wants to believe that a seven-headed snake lives at the bottom of Maguga Dam, the law cannot make him change his mind. But if a person has sex with an underage girl in the belief that sleeping with a virgin will cure AIDS, the law will prosecute him for statutory rape," says Swaziland's director of public prosecutions Lincoln Ng'aura. "Every nation and people on earth have their own superstitions and Africans are no more superstitious than anyone else," says Dr. Thandie Malepe, director of the Swaziland Psychiatric Centre. "But damage is done by people who act on their darkest beliefs. It then becomes incumbent on society to protect itself." South Africa's Traditional Healers Association has denounced the practice of AIDS-infected men having sex with virginal girls, saying this has no basis in traditional beliefs, not to mention in medicine. The society condemned traditional healers who prescribe this practice to patients with AIDS.

Western Cape South Africa Swazi Culture Mbabane Swaziland For all the modernisation that has come to Swaziland, the people have preserved their age-old culture and traditional ceremonies. The Swazi’s are predominantly Nguni in language and culture. They originate from east central africa. As part of the Nguni expansion southwards, the Swazi crossed the Limpopo river and settled in southern Tsongaland in the late fifteen century. Swaziland has been inhabitated since the early stone age and there are tracks of subsequent occupation by Bushmen, Sotho and Ntungwanguni clans. Swazi simply means the people of Mswati.  Rock paintings attributed to the San have been identified in many parts of Swaziland. The paintings usually depict animals, people, hunting parties, battle scenes and dances. Drive along any road in Swaziland and you will likely see many Swazi's dressed in colourful costume, featuring a bright toga-like garmnet - the mahiya. You may also meet Swazi warriors carrying battle-axes. The women that you encounter may sport the traditional "beehive" hairstyle, which is still very popular today. For all the modernisation that has come to Swaziland, the people have preserved their age-old culture and traditional ceremonies. The two most important and colourful of these, in the eyes of Swazi's and foreigners alike, are the Incwala in December and the Umhlanga in late August or early September.

Culture
Dancing and singing are features of Swaziland's main cultural ceremonies, and traditional get-togethers can be brilliant celebrations, with men and women dancing in unison in spectacular traditional gear. Although the monarchy has been criticised as illiberal, the main cultural festivals revolve around sacred ceremonies drawing the people together and reminding them of their relationship to the king. Swazi national dress is striking and you'll see it worn frequently, especially at ceremonies. Shades of ochre, pink and red are common, as is wearing bright feathers in the hair. Maize is the staple grain, and most people eat it as a type of porridge, often served with a fatty stew. That may sound unappetising, but it is a poor country and it suffers from chronic insecurity of food supply in regions prone to drought. Historically, Swazis have been meat eaters, but the average Swazi's diet is today more likely to be limited to maize, milk and vegetables. African home-produced beer, often made from sorghum or maize, is usually worth drinking, although its quality varies from place to place and you should ask for the best local outlet and brew.

Swaziland The smallest country in the southern hemisphere is also one of the most easy going - laid-back Swazis are more likely to celebrate for fun than demonstrate for reform. A progressive and hands-on attitude towards wildlife preservation has endowed it with a striking bunch of national parks. Black and white rhino, elephant, and more recently, lion, have been reintroduced into the collection of national parks and game reserves. You can trek, horse ride, raft on wild rivers or cycle through many of the parks and get surprisingly close to a huge variety of wildlife. While one or two towns get a little rough around the edges after dark, the tension palpably lifts if you have crossed into Swaziland from South Africa. Some of the more important festivals turn the Ezulwini ('Heaven') Valley into a brilliant spectacle of dancing and singing a couple of times a year, as tribespeople decked out in flamboyant costumes reaffirm their belief in the monarchy and their culture. There may be only one museum in the country and little in the way of night-time diversions besides gambling in the casino, but the countryside's thriving and the life's wild. Country Info Swaziland Introduction Swaziland General Data Swaziland Maps Swaziland Culture ... Swaziland Time and Date Swaziland Culture Back to Top The two main cultural events are the Incwala in December and the Umhlanga in August. The Incwala is sometimes described as a first-fruits ceremony, but, spread over six days, it is a much more complex ritual of renewing and strengthening the kingship and the nation, with songs and dances used only on this occasion. The Umhlanga, or Reed Dance, brings together the maidens of the country to cut reeds for the annual repairs to the windbreaks of the queen mother's village; it lasts for five days. It is also symbolic of the unity of the nation and of its perpetuation through the massed ranks of young women. Both ceremonies are held at the national capital of the queen mother. Other ceremonies are associated with the communal weeding and harvesting of the king's fields (and those of the chiefs) and with customary marriages. Most ceremonies are accompanied by traditional music, songs, and dancing. Musical instruments are simple in design, a kudu horn (impalampala) used for hunting or herding cattle, a calabash attached to a bow (umakweyane) for love songs, the reed flute, played by small boys while herding, and rattles made of seedpods attached to the wrists and ankles. However, more typical of the homestead nowadays are the radio and record and tape players.

HISTORY According to tradition, the people of the present Swazi nation migrated south before the 16th century to what is now Mozambique. Following a series of conflicts with people living in the area of modern Maputo, the Swazis settled in northern Zululand in about 1750. Unable to match the growing Zulu strength, the Swazis moved gradually northward in the 1800s and established themselves in the area of modern or present Swaziland.
