UN Renews Sanctions, Says Liberia Still Too Fragile
allAfrica.com The UN recently ruled against an appeal by transitional leader Gyude Bryant (pictured), saying that the peace in Liberia is too fragile for sanctions on timber and diamond exports to be lifted. Under former President Taylor, foreign exchange gained from the sale of the valuable commodities was used to fund the civil war.

Ethiopia: Farmers Battling Poverty Through Cooperatives
USAID An Ethiopian coffee farmer. USAID has been helping impoverished Ethiopians escape the cycle of poverty by working with some 550,000 farmers organised into cooperatives countrywide to achieve agricultural development and growth. The effort, which also seeks to help farmers gain access to international markets, has seen exports rise from a few tons five years ago to close to 5,500 mt, worth some $10 million, this year.

Reprinted from Components, vol. 1, no.4 (Fall 1990)
Earthworms can play a variety of important roles in agroecosystems. Their feeding and burrowing activities incorporate organic residues and amendments into the soil, enhancing decomposition, humus formation, nutrient cycling, and soil structural development (Mackay and Kladivko, 1985; Kladivko et al., 1986). Earthworm burrows persist as macropores which provide low resistance channels for root growth, water infiltration, and gas exchange (Kladivko and Timmenga, 1990; Zachmann and Linden, 1989). Quality, quantity and placement of organic matter is a main determinant of earthworm abundance and activity in agricultural soils (Edwards, 1983; Lofs-Holmin, 1983), as are disturbances of the soil by tillage, cultivation, and the use of pesticides (Doran and Werner, 1990). This article will review recent information on earthworms as it relates to the sustainability of agriculture. For further information, see Lee (1985) or Satchell (1983).

Sustainable Animal Production - Visions for the 21th century Welcome to our Website
Sustainable animal production is a system which preserves the basis of life of future generations. The foundations, conditions and perspectives for animal production are exceedingly variable in different parts of the world. This project focusses on the future supply and quality of food for humans and animals, animal welfare and health, the effects of animal production on the environment, the influences of new technologies, future animal production sites and global trade. These pages contain the Conference Sustainable Animal Production , the documentation of a multidisciplinary project to develop a global vision for the future of the production of food of animal origin. This site is also intended as a forum to continue the dialogue begun in the virtual conference and workshop series "Sustainable Animal Production". The project was realized by a consortium of scientists from four research institutions in northern Germany and includes a virtual conference launched in October, 1999, and followed by a series of
